trying to help a friend out who may have been infected last nite. she received an email from another email acct of her's and opened it. in the email was a .rar attachment titled make.rar, she opened it. she then launched a .exe that was contained in the .rar (don't know the name of it and am leary to open the .rar again to see). a notepad doc then opened on her screen with the very simple message of 'sorry'. she knew as soon as she did it that it was a mistake and is feeling awfully embarassed.
norton has been run with the most recent virus definitions and no infection has been found, but it seems as if there must be. hijackthis log is below.
thx in advance,
SuMMiT

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.
You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
Bitdefender
Pandasoftware
Trend Micro << Click Auto Clean
Symantec Security Check << click scan for viruses
RAV Online Virus Scanner << Enter your e-mail address and click on To continue without subscribing
McAfee

Write down anything that can not be fixed. Include the file name and the path to the file.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.
Hi,
I'm the friend who f'ed up. Thank you so much for your help. I am quite a novice at this, so any further help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I followed your advice, and I ran HijackThis and "fix checked" the files you instructed me to.

I then did a virus scan with Pandasoftware, and got the following results:

Incident Status Location

Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8A6.exe
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8A8.exe
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BA.exe
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BF.exe

Then I did a Symantec scan, which detected nothing.

Then I did a trend micro scan which gave me the following results, which I was unable to print, so I hand copied them, and just typed below (I don't know if that means or effects anything) There were 7 viruses, all labeled TrojBagle.bh and the result for each of them was "non cleanable"
They were:
C:Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8A8.exe
C:Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8A8.exe
C:Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BA.exe
C:Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BF.exe
System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BAOA-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP557\A0038737.exe
System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BAOA-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}RP558\A00378769.exe
System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BAOA-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}RP558\A0038778.exe

Then I did a HijackThis log, which I will paste below. My computer is getting slower and slower, and the keyboard sometimes acts up with the cursor jumping to the wrong place. I am scared to death, and would appreciate any help you can give me, the more detailed the better, as I really have never done this before.
Thank you so much!
Shari

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Step 1
  • Download Stinger and save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot into safe mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool.
  • Choose your entire hard drive to scan.
  • Choose Scan Now.
  • Stinger will fix anything that it finds.
Step 2
Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\Every username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Step 3
Reboot normally. Download the Hoster from here.
  • Unzip the contents of hoster.zip.
  • Double click on hoster.exe to run the program.
  • Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK".
  • Exit Program.

Step 4
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.
Once again, thank you so much for your help! I followed your instructions. I ran stinger. below are the results.

Scan initiated on Mon Apr 18 09:14:35 2005

C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8A6.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BA.exe has been deleted.

C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BF.exe

Found the W32/Bagle.gen@MM virus !!!

C:\Documents and Settings\Shari Paige\Local Settings\Temp\~8BF.exe has been deleted.

Number of clean files: 129803

Number of infected files: 4

Number of files deleted: 4

Then I deleted my temporary files. I then rebooted and downloaded hoster. After running hoster, I realized that I forgot to empty the recycle bin, so I emptied it and then ran hoster again.

My friend and I were puzzled that Trend Micro found 7 viruses, and stinger only found and fixed 4, so out of curiosity, I ran trend micro again, and this time it found nothing.

My system restore is still turned off – should I turn it back on?

The keyboard problem has stopped. My computer is still slower than usual. It always is slow, even with DSL, and I never understood why as it is a fairly new Dell, but it still is a little slower than usual.

Below is my latest hijack this log. I would greatly appreciate any feedback/advice/instructions you can give.
Thank you so much!
shari

My system restore is still turned off – should I turn it back on?

Yes, turn it back on.

For the dsl speed issues, you can try PCPitstop as they are better suited for fixing these kinds of problems. Be sure to include a link to this thread so they can see that your computer is clean of malware.

Your new log is clean.:)

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :D One last quick question – I just bought Norton Internet Security right after the problem started, and its been running this whole time. Is it totally useless? Was I completely ripped off? Should I just use these free ones instead in the future, or are they supposed to be used in addition to? Thank you again, you rock! Shari
Personally, I have Norton Internet Security 2004 running on my computer. I've never had any major problems with it although it can be finicky with other programs. As long as you have it set to scan incoming and outgoing e-mails this problem should not occur again. Just make sure to keep it updated so it will detect the latest virus/worms. It is not recommended to have more than one Antivirus or Firewall running at one time. Many people will have an alternate Antivirus program on their computer to scan with but it needs to be set to not start on it's own. :)
Alsocom, This is SuMMiT, the original poster. Thanks so much for helping us out with this issue. I can assure you Shari has learned her lesson and will NEVER open another executable that has been emailed to her. You guys are an amazing resource. You saved my skin once when I got infected through a file I picked up P2P, as well as helped me when WildTangent ran amok on my system. Thanks so much for all you do. We will get Shari's machine set up with some protection. I believe she has AdAware already, but we will get Spybot, Spyware Blaster and Zone Alarm on there. I run them all and they have certainly helped. Again, thanks for everything, including the suggestion of using PCPitstop to help diagnose the slow DSL speeds. Take care.
Your welcome. Glad the computer is working better.
