Hi Shelf Life. Thank you for all your help. Don't be deterred. No-one can fix everything! The red and black desktop of doom is gone which is great and my PC is running better. I will make a further donation in appreciation of your help. Apparently I have to get my paypal account verified first which is going to take 3-5 working days. Best wishes Jerry :wavey:

Hi Again.

Aluria Security Suite had a new update so I updated and ran it. It identifed 2 malicious programs: perfect key logger and cool web search. It quarantined the objects (auto delet after 2 days).

I ran HJT again. The log is below. I will not do anything else in the meantime.

Kind regards

Jerry

You will have to remove this for now. As it will hinder the fix and reinstall the baddies :)

You may need to print out these instructions or save them to a note pad. So that you can enter the exact file names in killbox.
Should you need instructions for ;
Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.
Reboot in safe mode.
Click the underlined links above.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Then Download and Save Spywadfix to your computer from this link:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/spywadfix.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\spywad where it needs to be to run and will automatically open the remove spywad.vbs script for you ready to paste in the line mentioned below.
If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run.

It is not malicious.
It will open an Input box. Paste this line into the box

C:\WINDOWS\Egc.exe

The script will kill that process, backup and then delete any matching files in System32 and your Windows Directory. It will create a log of all files deleted. This log file will be named Spywad.txt and be located inside the C:\Spywad Folder. The backups will also be located in two subfolders there. One named Systems and the other named Window.

The script will search the Windows Directory and delete desktop.html and popup.html if they exist. It will add entries to the log if these files are found and deleted.

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your windows default desktop and context menu functions.
It will restart Explorer.

** Script Does not remove the orphaned run entries.

Finally, it will Run hijackthis so that you can remove the orphaned run entries. If hijackthis doesn't start, run it manually.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following,

Run Pocket Killbox
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

When finished, post the contents of Spywad.txt and a new Hijackthis log.

If the files deleted are all found to be part of the infection and nothing important has been deleted, you will be instructed to delete the entire Spywad Folder after you have cleaned up all other User Profiles on that system.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

I have included another vbs to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the C:\Spywad folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

Then run hijackthis and remove the entries as directed by your Forum Advisor.

You will need to do this step for every user account

To reset your wallpaper, open Display Properties > Desktop Tab. Choose a Wallpaper and apply. Close Display Properties. To see the change, click on the desktop and press F5.

Note you only need one firewall and AV.

Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.
A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Hi Little Eagle

Thank you for the instructions.

Also appreciated and noted the advice on Firewall/ Router.

Unfortunately ran into a problem.

I entered the line "C:\WINDOWS\Egc.exe" in Spywad and got a dialogue box response that it "…doesn't exist".

Had already uninstalled Adaware Se Plus / Adwatch and deleted the line

  O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AWMON] "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Watch.exe"

with HJT. Switched off MS antispyware, Norton (except antispam); Aluria; Ewido. Uninstalled the trial verison of Spyware Doctor. Terminated Ewido in task manager (processes). Tried Spywad again - same response. Did copy the line C:\WINDOWS\Egc.exe to be 100% sure of getting it right.

Looked at the instructions again (links to safe mode/ showing hidden files/ folders). Tried again in Safe Mode. Same problem.

The latest HJT log is below.

Many thanks

Jerry

Click start>my computer>local disk
(then follow the path) C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe
Right click on the file and go to Properties.
Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from:

Using Windows Explorer Click start search type in
alg.exe
see if more than one file shows up if only one file showes up
Please Zip this file and send it here

Here are the directions for creating a zip file For Windows XP:
Using Windows Explorer, locate the first file you want to zip.
Right click on the file and select Send To and Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Right click any other files you want to compress and select Copy.
Right click on the compressed folder and select Paste. The copied files will be compressed and pasted in.
Right click on the file and select Explore.
Hi, Thanks for your post and instructions. Found the file in Windows Explorer! There are 4 of them in the following locations: C:\Windows32 C:\Windows\$NTServicePackuninstall$ C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\16b296a0c41f4db4d3cc228af819 holding the mouse over them shows a summary and in each case it shows "Company:Microsoft Corporation" and one other similar file name: ALG.EX-275708CF.PF in locatiion C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch. this one shows no author just a creation time and date from this morning's start-up. One of the features of the infection is that the PC does not have the right click function eg on desktop, my computer or windows explorer. So I can't check the file properties in the normal way, I can only see the summary given by holding the mouse pointer over the file. Without the right click function I can zip files using the drop down menu's. In a minute I will send one via your link. As the alg.exe files that came up all have the same name I can't put them in the same zip folder and I wasn't sure if you wanted them all. I have sent you the one from C:\WINDOWS32. Obviously I would be happy to send the others if you would like them. Thanks again Best wishes Jerry :weee:

Hi There

Thank you for your post.

When you say

Once done remember to run only one AV at a time

I am not 100% sure what to do. One firewall. No problem, but do you mean only one antivirus/ anti spyware type programme running "background protection" as well? I have enabled XP firewall and got rid of Norton (see below). My current PC protection is XP Firewall + Kapersky Personal 5.0 plus MS Antispyware. I have A squared, Aluria Security Suite, Microworld Antivirus, Spyware blasterand Spybot all all switched off ready for occasional scans on demand. Does that sound OK?

Down to business:
I had MS antispyware so updated it and ran it. Full scan. Came up clear. Xsoftspy ran on schedule and came up with a positive for trojan/ cws combo and horseserver.

Downloaded KAV Personal 5.0. On installation it warned about conflicts with Norton. Initially I just disabled Norton AV at first but had problems so I completely uninstalled Norton IS 2005. Also uninstalled Xsoftspy and Ewido for good measure.

Updated KAV Personal 5.0. (It picked up an attack LOVESAN from [removed] while updating) Before running scan Disabled MS Antispyware background protection; switched off A Squared Background protection.

Ran KAV personal 5.0 Full scan. It identifed and deleted:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msgs0905.dll.mw diagnosed as viruswin32.bayan-based.

Still with everything off (apart from Kapersky) ran Spywad again on

C:\WINDOWS\Egc.exe

but with the same result - file not found.

Ran HJT again (see log below). Checked Processes again carefully in HJT there were no 3 letter .exe files. Ticked the box for dll this time and there was one entry.

I found an interesting very similar case on a tech forum link from www.thespykiller.co.uk. The thread is at http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t…=horse%3Bserver

In this case Spywad did not work on the first attempt because the key file had changed and had to be identified again. It looked to me that your diagnosis

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AWMON] "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Plus\Ad-Watch.exe"

You will have to remove this for now. As it will hinder the fix and reinstall the baddies smile.gif

You may need to print out these instructions or save them to a note pad. So that you can enter the exact file names in killbox.
Should you need instructions for ;
Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.

C:\WINDOWS\Egc.exe

etc was probably 100% right but that the Egc.exe file was no longer the "key" file. Maybe one of the applications on my system was also getting in the way eg A squared, Norton, MS Antispyware?

Hope you don't mind me making some suggestions. At the end of the day if it is distracting - I will understand and can keep quiet!

Your help is much appreciated.

Kind regards

Jerry

Hi Little Eagle A quick update. Having uninstalled Norton Internet Security (which hadn't been doing great) I didn't want to be without a personal firewall so I have bought Kaspersky Anti Hacker Personal to run alongside Kaspersky Anti Virus and Microsoft Anti Spyware. Hopefully Thursday/ Friday I will get a new model Vigor router with built in firewall Do you think this sounds like a decent PC security solution? In due course I would plan re-install Adaware Se plus, adwatch and when it is released Kapersky anti Spam. In addition I would plan to keep some anti-virus programs eg Aluria for one off manual use. I am very appreciative of the kind help from yourself and Shelf Life. But if my PC is still proving difficult to fix remotely I am thinking about re-formatting the drive and doin a clean install. I know that might seem a bit defeatist and possibly even ungrateful, it is neither: I just have to be pragmatic. The PC is key to my business as well as for personal use. Even if it comes to re-formatting the drive I will be pleased to make a further decent donation 1) out of genuine appreciation 2) because I think it is important to safeguard the internet for dare I say it "the greater good". Kind regards Jerry B)
Hi Little Eagle

Had a a little more work to do getting KAV to run properly. Uninstalled it. Took out further Norton components that didn't go automatically. Got shot of some other unneeded programs and AV programs to simplify things further. One program that didn't look too clever (as a vulnerability) was a blue tooth program that had a huge number of ports listed and which was pulling alerts from KAH. It got uninstalled and remaining files deleted.

PC is running very well now with KAV and KAH. You know I rang K Lab in the UK and got live technical help over the phone - amazing still can't believe it. Only wanted to ask them which firewall/ other products to use with NAV.

I know the PC isn't fixed yet but I actually have my desktop control back!!!!!!!! Thank you! thank you! thank you! :)

Still seem to have duplication of desktop shortcuts - although I was able to successfully delete a lot of them (but not all). Still do not have right click back on the mouse in a number of situations (desktop;windows explorer)

The latest HJT log is below.

Best wishes

Jerry
