Despite use of Norton IS 2003, Adaware, and Spybot I have some malicious program/s on my PC causing havoc.:
* there is an ad for slimshield on my desktop that won't go
* my own desktop wallpaper / shortcuts went
*new shortcuts all duplicate themselves
*Cannot right click on some icons where it should work
*code in telnet will not type properly
*internet trusted zone gets invaded
*IE6 browser was getting hijacked to a slimshield site/ popup ad
So I did the following:
*Ran spybot, adaware and Norton Antivirus 2003 with no real effect
*Got Windows Update SP2, all security updates for XP, IE6 and office
* upgraded to Norton Internet Securty 2005 (maybe this is not properly loaded)*
*Downloaded the MS Antispyware Beta1

which seemed to put a lid on the Browser hijack and keep loads of .exe programs eg con.exe, jdh.exe out of my start up registry. But I would love to know where the mother ship is that is creating them

Upgraded to lavasoft adaware Se plus most plugins and ran it and all the plug in tools

Now I realise I am in trouble. I would really like to rant rant rant….

Do I have to format the c drive and re-load. Can't really afford to lose all my data (word, excel, msoutlookexpress, jpegs) which is mainly on another drive.

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

Jerry

Hi. I have been trying to make some steps towards resolving the problem by myself.

Downloaded: Spyware Blaster; A Squared and CW Shredder.

Ran some anti programs again in normal mode: Norton AntiVirus 2005; Spybot 1.3, Ad-Aware SE Plus; Spyware Blaster and A Squared. A Squared picked up well over 50 malicious/ suspect programs which were removed. The others did not pick up anything (although A Squared was run last).

Changed my serial mouse for a proper mouse (serial mouse wouldn't work in safe mode) and ran Adaware SE Plus, Spybot 1.3 and A Squared. Nothing was picked up.

Ran Hijack this again - what a neat program this is. I can see some hostile .exe files again but as I don't know how to get at the cause of them I have left alone and not deleted anything this time.

Please help when you get thru the backlog.

Jerry

Found several very similar solved problems featuring the red and black Slimshield desktop of doom so I guess there is hope especially if any of the hero's who have beaten it are able to help. Would love to copy these solutions but guess it wouldn't work and could make things worse.

Ran 3 free checks from anti programs recommended on this site. Picked up 2 cookies and 1 adware with Spydoctor and deleted them manually from windows explorer. Aluria Security Center's free check picked up 3 threats so being despearate I bought it and ran a full scan. It picked up and deleted:
*coolwebsearch
*virtualbouncer
*DyFuCa
(but not the cookies which had to be deleted manually). Surprised that these weren't picked up by one of the other programs and I wonder if they were "created" or "injected" or picked up since my last scans.

Then I ran hijack this, and feeling brave deleted all the three letter .exe files I could find.

Then I rebooted the machine (thinking that something dodgy is going on when the machine is re-booted ie creation/ insertion of hostile programs) and ran hijack this again.

I am sure that there is still a least one hostile program on my system as the desktop is still hijacked and it is still doing odd things. Please please help when you can.

More generally I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of some further reading. in particular I would like to better understand what data might be taken and why (generally and by the specific programs on my PC). Does anyone know if Slimshield is even a legitimate program - I did try and buy it - doh!

hi, please put hjt into its own folder, we will use hjt, boot to safe mode, delete files: but first: turn off system restore for now and make sure files are set to show: Follow the instructions below to disable/enable System Restore You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed. Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points. To turn off Windows XP System Restore: NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK. 1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. ok going by the latest log (after reboot) —————————— ==Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders * Click Start. * Open My Computer. * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. * Select the View Tab. * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types * Click Yes to confirm. * Click ——————————- run hjt, select these items then close all windows and click fix checked: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E7BF4A1B-00EA-451E-8A9E-16B7DB25E0F9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nkooefa.dll (file missing) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Shell] open32.exe O4 - Startup: winupdate51631952[1].exe O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.62.171.156 (HKLM (unless you added it to your trusted zone) O23 - Service: Windows update Service (updater) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsvc.exe ——————————— ok now boot computer into safe mode by tapping the f8 ket at restart, once in safe mode, find and delete only this file: winsvc.exe>>located here>>C:\WINDOWS\system32 also in safe mode: Click Start>Run then type %temp% Hit OK. Hi Shelf life Thanks for you reply. Very pleased to hear from you. Sorry for the delay, I could not get a connection to the tc website for the last few days. I will follow your prescrption and post back ASAP. Thanks again. Jerry :)
OK I carefully followed the instructions:

Had to get at system restore via control panel/ system properties as I could not right click"my computer"

One file was not there because I had previously deleted it when it was picked up by one of the "anti" programs:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E7BF4A1B-00EA-451E-8A9E-16B7DB25E0F9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nkooefa.dll (file missing)

Everything else went to plan until I got right to the end

In the last 2 steps: when I re-booted normally I got an error about Win32 services. Ran HJT , looked at the log and found c:\windows\system32\winsvc.exe was still there! Just in case I made a mistake I deleted it again went back to safe mode and repeated the steps

"also in safe mode:
Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can.

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin"

then I ran HJT in safe mode and looked for all the stuff that was deleted and the winsvce.exe program was back again.

Then I went back to normal mode ran HJT again(it still wasn't gone). The log is below.

Best regards

Jerry

rescan post new hjt log
Hi Shelf Life

I followed the 2nd set of instructions carefully.

It was straight forward to the step of re-booting in safe mode at which point I did not see DMIP.exe; EGC.exe (did see winsys32\ctfmon.exe?).

Norton AV 2005 would not run in safe mode; A Squared did not find anything. Did the next steps to the end (remove temp files/ temp internet files/ recylcle bin). Ran HJT again to make sure I had not messed up and found some files still there so deleted them again and repeated the last 2 steps (%temp% and cleanmgr).

In normal mode I had success with Microworld. For $9.95 I thought it only fair to buy a months use. It did find several problem. Parts of the 2 logs from MWAV are below I have put he headers in blue text. Below that there is the latest HJT log. What a neat product MWAV is, particularly like the port view (just wish I understood it properly) I think the Malware on my PC used/ is using telnet connections and would like to catch it at it!

Ran Norton. Didn't find anything. Tried the other online scans but could not run them in Firefox reluctantly tried IE6 (not ready to trust it yet) but the windows would not stay open to run a scan - maybe I deleted a plug-in? (IE6 has produced an error message on start-up everytime for a couple of months and before I got the desktop of doom.

Having finished I notice that in processes there are 5 or so svchost.exe programs running in normal mode.

Lastly and don't laugh too hard, I have an e-mail from "Slimshield Tech" with a "cleaning program" allegedly to help sort the IE6 hijack and mouse control problems. Do you want it for analysis or should I delete it out of Outlook Express?

Thanks again for your help.

Jerry

hi,

you still have something going on.

I have an e-mail from "Slimshield Tech" with a "cleaning program" allegedly to help sort the IE6 hijack and mouse control problems. Do you want it for analysis or should I delete it out of Outlook Express?

delete it- dont reply or download anything. (when your log looks good we will Secure outlook)
————————
ok lets try this:
first i would print this out or copy it to a text file like notepad, then save it to your desktop so you can read it. before starting>>> pull the plug on your modem.<<<<

run hjt, select these items then close all windows and click fix checked:

Hi Shelf Life

Followed the instructions v. carefully.

Red and black desktop of doom went today while my PC was either starting -up or running! Whahey! Adaware Adwatch showed registry changes by Spy Doctor during the same period.

The PC still does not seem right. If it helps these are some of the odd things:

* Cannot right click or use file/ menu to check properties of files eg in windows explorer
*Desk top control is not back (plain colour only)
* Desktop icons are all duplicated (ie pairs)
* MS Anti Spyware beta keeps popping up occasionally with warnings or notifications that sound suspect eg "shell open command invoked by IE" or "shell open command FTP files by IE). Would you like to see the log - I can't open it to as test to cut and paste but could upload it/ e-mail it
* Adaware Adwatch is picking up quite a few registry modification related to internet explorer. See log at end of mail

Back to the point.

Followed the instructions.

* Could not find any of the 04 files in safe mode in explorer (or normal mode) did this twice looking for ages in c:\ windows and c:\windows\ system 32. Used date order, name order and even searched. Nothing (although they are all still in the final log). Very odd I am 500% sure that if it was possible to find them in explorer I would have got them.

* Emptied out all the temp/ temp internet files. Found a ridiculous amount of index.dat and desktop.ini files. I thought there was only supposed to be one index.dat file or maybe one per account?

* %temp% looked empty until I looked around and found a load more local IE5 temp content

HJT log is below.

Thanks again for your help and perserverence.

Jerry

H Shelf Life Thanks for the mail. The Ewido Security Suite Sounds good. I think it might be worth me uninstalling any programmes that I don't need including free games and something called Ipswitch an FTP programme that I had downloaded for work but hadn't had a chance to use yet? I have ordered a good router (Vigor) from a local IT guy - it has some built in security. Unless you reckon I should wait I'll get it put in now. I am just suspicious that there is some unauthorised communication going on (multiple svchost.exe programmes running; alerts from MS anitvirus to do with IE). Xsoft Spy free version picks up 2 objects that nothing else does but I can't find them manually They are: *software\microsoft\Internet explorer\msin\toolbars_placement (high risk) *software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\shell:@:open32.exe See below for Micro World Antivirus Utlility TCP log - there seems to be a lot going on but I don't know what to look for. hi,

in reply to your comments:
–yes uninstall programs you dont use
–a router is a good idea, but after your computer is clean
–you can have several svchost. exe running at same time
–that TCP dump looks good to me
————————–

i would print this out or copy to text file like notepad then save it somewhere so you can read it. read through first, get all the needed downloads.

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

also before starting i would disable/exit by clicking the microsoft Antispyware icon down by the clock. if you have real time protection enabled it may prevent changes we want to make. Also exit ad aware if its running.

need two downloads:

You have a Horseserver infection which requires some tools to get rid of.
  • First, download HSFix from here
  • After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HSFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.
  • Next, download CleanUp! Install it, but do not run it yet.
  • Boot into safe mode: Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Locate the HSFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hsfix.bat"
  • A log will be produced which you can close out of.
  • Then run HijackThis again, close any open windows and browsers and fix these:

  • some of these may not be part of the horseserver infection, but we will try to get rid of them anyway:

  • ok now doubleclick the cleanup312.exe you downloaded. when it opens under Options select Custom. put a check next to these;
  • All Users
    Scan local drives for temp..
    delete prefetch files

    click Cleanup
when its done and it asks you to logoff click—->no

now look for the above 04 files and delete them. the first one on the list could be in several places:
    C:\open32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\open32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\open32.exe

if you cant find the others dont worry about it for now:
    ——————————————-
is ad aware, microsoft antispyware, norton, microworld, a2 all updated? if not update and run each one.
    ——————————————-
rescan and post new hjt log………….
Hi Shelf Life

Thank you for the latest instructions.

First thing you should know is that I got a later version of cleanup from the link (v4.0). Hope that didn't matter, later is better?!

Then I ran into the same problem as yesterday. Just hope you don't think that I'm a total idiot…

As before, having found and removed these items through HJT I could not find them with windows explorer.

I did make sure that it was set to see hidden files and protected op system files. I double checked this in safe mode too after a lot of fruitless searching. Actually the options were already set correctly from previously. Just to be sure I restored defaults and then set them as instructed. But still no open32.exe or any of the other 04 files.

.

Ran updates and scans as listed. No positives (although A-Squared did pick up "clean up"). Ran Xoft it still picked up horse server and it picked up trojan/cws combo located in software\microsoft\IE\main\toolbars_placement.

The only other thing I thought worth mentioning is that in control panel I can only see one user id jerry64 (which is an admin level use) on start-up to safe mode I get 2 log on prompts admin and jerry64. Should I try going from the admin logon in explorer to find the files?

Look forward to hearing from you. I am sure this problem will be beaten!

All the best

Jerry :weee:
