Greetings all,
Just found about this site in PC World. I have Win XP Home, just finished running Spybot and Counterspy. They both removed numerous adware and spy programs. Now here is my log, I have no idea what is what. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello co-bikeman and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Looks like just some basic cleanup is required. No bad items on your computer.

Step 1
Please update to HijackThis 1.99.1.
  • Open HijackThis and click config.. < Misc. Tools and click Check for Update Online.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://home.iwon.com/index_gen.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Dear Slyware,
Thanks for checking me out. I did as you requested, here is the new log.
Computer seems to be running fine except super slow on startup. I have
looked at the startup menu in msconfig, don't know what to turn off and can't
figure out how to copy the menu to post. How do I do that without doing each
item by hand??

Thanks very much for your help.

I can see all of the startup items in your log so there is no need to copy what is in msconfig. :)

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

After updating the computer, post a new log and I can give you some recommendations to remove unneeded items and also a list of programs to help keep the computer clean.
Alan, Thanks, I have an SP2 disk on order from Microsoft. I have such a poor connection that I can't seem to get it downloaded fully. When it arrives I will install and get you the results. Thanks so much for all of your help. Kelly
I'll leave you with this until you receive the SP2 disk from Microsoft. Feel free to post your new log once it has been installed.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Hi Alan,
Finally got SP2 disk from MS and got it installed uneventfully. Here
is my most recent logfile. Computer is still creaking it is running so slowly.
Startup is painful, takes forever. Then the first time I start IE and Outlook Express they load very slowly. Guess I want to cut back on my startup items
as much as possible. What do you think?

Thanks for your help,

Kelly

I'll give you these optional items to fix which may improve your performance.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

MS SideWinder game controller system tray icon. This is specific to version 4 of the software.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SideWinderTrayV4] C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\GAMECO~1\Common\SWTrayV4.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QD FastAndSafe] C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\GAMECO~1\Common\SWTrayV4.exe

Reminder to register Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! cards
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe

HP's exclusive Share-to-Web software makes it easy to share content with others through our affiliate Internet websites.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe

This installs the QuickTime System Tray icon. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in QuickTime itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Open Quick Time Player (2)Edit > Preferences > Quick Time Preferences (3)uncheck Quick Time System Tray icon on the Browser Plug-in Pane
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

SpyCop surveillance software detection - checks to see when your machine was last scanned and if it was more than a week asks if you want to scan
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyCop ScanCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Perl.exe /LASTSCAN

If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Download CCleaner to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Download CCleaner from here.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.

Step 3
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Let us know if your performance has improved.
Holy Moly! Fired right up, IE and OE started almost instantly! By Jove, I think you did it! :) :) :)
Wish you were here so I could buy you a beer, what the hell, a case!

Tell me what you think.
thanks much, Alan.

Alan, I have one other minor glitch that I wonder if you would look at. Norton Doctor keeps telling me I am missing a file: C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\09\01\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll" . I have run a search on my XP CD, looked on my laptop, and cannot find this file anywhere. What is InstallShield, is it a necessary program? Can I just ditch the whole program or do you know how I fix it? Jeez this computer is running better! Thanks, Kelly
Your welcome. Glad the computer is working faster now. :)
