My IE homepage is being changed and I cannot stop it. I'm running Windows XP Pro with Norton Internet Security 2004. I suspect the following files of being the culprits or at least accesory to the madness. d3jt.exe and addzg.exe NAV was able to identify 6 at risk files all .dll variables asscociated with Ifeats adware. The Symantec removal tool failed to correct the problem. Any help would be much appreciated. Here is my HJT log.

Looks like the bad infection is gone.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Again Thank You, I have not updated IE or Win XP w/ SP2 as the Microsoft server is having issues. I did however try to initiate a virus scan with Norton Internet Security only to find a supervisor account has been created and the auto protect functions are all disabled and I do not have the rights to turn them on without a password. I tried to uninstall Norton Internet Security but it informed me I must login as the supervisor to uninstall the software. I'm confused as to how this happened unless one of the programs used to clean up my machine created a user account within windows thus creating one in Norton as well. Any tips?
OK got the Norton thing worked out thanks for your patience. Had to reinstall NIS after pulling my head out of my butt and surfing the help indexes. Here is the latest HJT Log.

Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
