I hope you can help me. My Windows XP computer got infected by a Trojan yesterday. I've run Norton, Spybot, AVG Antivirus and AVG Spyware. They were supposedly fixed and "healed". Anyway, subsequent scans don't find anything, but something is still causing my Control Panel to disappear and is placing restrictions on my being able to run regedit and other system programs. I can't figure out what it is, or how to fix the restriction problem. Here is my log:

Hi JanK,

It appears that you have two antivirus programs running - Norton and AVG Antivirus (not AVG Antispyware). Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

If you have two antivirus programs installed, then before proceeding, please remove one of them.
Please make sure you choose one currently capable of receiving updates, because an antivirus program without updates cannot protect your system effectively. If you have any problems, please stop and let me know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. The only reason I'm running two anti-virus packages is that Symantec didn't appear to find anything causing my problems. I then downloaded AVG, which did a better job.

Since my original posting, I've discovered some things that may change what you would like me to do. It seems that I've stopped the spawning, but I'm still having some system problems. Here's what I did:

AVG discovered a problem with the following file:

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup|info.exe

The same program was in the Startup subfolder for the user profile I'm using. Seeing the time stamp on that file, I searched my system for other .exe files with the same time stamp. I discovered files called system.exe and autorun.exe in these same startup folders. I renamed these files. I also found these:

c:\Windows\System32\pritner.exe
c:\Windows\System32\winavxx.exe

I renamed these also. I also found a printer.exe process in Task Manager, which I killed. The spawning seems to have stopped. I say that because I had been getting an annoying popup every couple of minutes that said that something was making copies of my system files. When I clicked on this popup (which I did accidentally a couple of times because it popped up while I was typing) it opened a browser window, which I'm assuming was downloading something bad to my PC. That popup has stopped. I don't know if this is permanent, since I haven't rebooted since I did this late yesterday.

Here are the problems this caused, and the problems I'm still having:

- This nasty little bugger put garbage in my hosts file. I've cleaned that out.
- My Control Panel has disappeared. I can open it by going into windows\system32\control.exe and opening it under the Administrator ID, but most of the apps under Control Panel are restricted.
- There are some programs from the system tray that are also restricted, Norton Antivirus being one of them.
- Set Program Access and Defaults is also restricted.
- I also had to get into Task Manager by way of the system32 folder. Also regedit.
- It was changing my default IE home page.
- There's still something weird going on in IE that I can't put my finger on. I can't view graphics on some sites, and a dropdown on another. I'm a web designer, and these are sites I support. I can view these on other machines.
- The profile I use on this machine is supposed to have Administrator access, so somehow that got disabled.

There may be other things I haven't discovered yet, or can't think of.

Please let me know if you would like me to take the same steps you've already outlined, or something different. Thanks so much for your help. You guys are great. This issued has really disrupted my week and affected my ability to finish some of my projects. I'm inserting a current Hijack log.

Thanks again,
Jan

I just noticed a typo I made above. One of the files I found is supposed to be c:\Windows\System32\printer.exe, not pritner.exe. Jan

Hi JanK, Those files you found were bad, however we have specialist tools which target this infection and remove it completely. I recommend you follow the instructions from the previous post, and especially the removal of one antivirus program. If you don't like Symantec then by all means remove it, there are very good alternatives that are available free of charge, but please remove one of them or else you run the risk of creating another problem for your machine.

Hi JanK,

Have you decided which antivirus program you would like to keep and which you will remove? This is very important as you may experience system problems if you leave them both installed. Please remove one of these programs before continuing, if you have questions about this then please ask.

Can you tell me how many user accounts you have on this machine? Is NLM Developer your usual account?

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 2) from here

You have My Way Search Assistant installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it does report on your surfing behavior and is considered very undesirable. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google toolbar. I recommend you remove this program, to do so, open Add/Remove Programs, find My Way Search Assistant and select Remove

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvXX.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DoNotDelete] C:\WINDOWS\system32\explore.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvXX.exe
O4 - Startup: system.exe.bad
O4 - Global Startup: autorun.exe.bad
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {8FCDF9D9-A28B-480F-8C3D-581F119A8AB8} - http://static.zangoc.../bridge-c18.cab
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\systems.txt
O23 - Service: Windows Notification Service (Winnotify) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\winntify.exe (file missing)

If you remove My Way Search Assistant then also check these lines:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.
Once complete, please post the ComboFix report and a new HijackThis log.
