Browser Crash - Pages Cannot Be Found

After searching the internet for a few minutes (time varies from almost immediately to a half-hour or so) my browser crashes and stops responding. If I click on a link or type in an address, I get a message that says "Alert: www.google.com (or whatever page I am trying to go to) could not be found. Please check the name and try again." I am currently using Firefox, but I've had the same problem with Internet Explorer and Opera. The only way to temporarily fix the problem is to shut down the browser and try to re-start it several times. Often, I have to completely close my dial-up connection and then re-connect. I run Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG anti-virus every week and I update before each run. I've also run CWShredder, including scans in "clean start" mode. I'm not finding anything. However, the folks at the Microsoft forum think this might be a spyware problem and referred me to you. I would appreciate any help. Here is my Hijackthis log.

Mr. Bill
Hello Mr. Bill , welcome to the TC.

The only thing I can see is it looks like you're running two versions of Grisoft Anti-Virus programs at the same time.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG_CC] C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\avgcc32.exe /startup

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Grisoft\AVG6.

Let me know if that helps
LD Tate, thanks for your help. I managed to delete AVG6, although it wasn't listed under Add/Remove Programs. This seems to have helped. Problems are less frequent and more easily cured. However, it would be nice to totally get rid of this problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks again. Mr. Bill
Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

To use it:
  • Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install.
  • Open CCleaner.
  • Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
  • Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
  • Hit the button that says Run CCleaner
  • Reboot to remove index.dat files.

Empty Recycle Bin

"copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LD, I ran all the scans you suggested and then ran CCleaner. Nothing was detected in the scans, but CCleaner removed a lot of stuff. The computer SEEMS to be running fine. I haven't had any problems today. However, there have been other days in the past when all seemed fine and then the next day the browser was freezing up again. Anyway, I will get back to you if it starts acting up again.

Here is my latest log file, as requested. Thanks again for your help.

Mr. Bill

I did a fair amount of surfing on the internet yesterday and a little this morning. No problems with Firefox so far. Mr. Bill
I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LD, I did everything that you suggested. I've done a fair amount of internet surfing the past couple of days and everything seems to be fine. One thing new is that after following your procedures, a new shortcut appeared on my desktop. It's titled, 'desktop.ini' and it's for 'configuration settings'. Is it safe to delete this shortcut?

Here is the latest highjackthis log, as requested. Thanks again.

No. You're seeing that because we still have "Show Hidden Files" loaded. This will take care of it:

Good Job

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
:) I followed your instructions, and now everything is back to normal. Thanks again, I really appreciate your help. I am going to donate, to help keep this forum going for others like me who really need it. I do have one last favor to ask. I'd like your opinion about Windows security updates, particularly Service Pack 2. As you've noticed in my logs, I have not installed SP2. In fact, I haven't installed any upgrades on this computer. I've had nothing but trouble with these in the past. At least half the time, they do unexpected things to my computer. They turn things back on that I had turned off, they turn things off that I want on, and they mess up other programs. Recently, when I started having this browser problem, I went to the Windows update site and was told I needed about 18 "critical updates." The very first one I installed prevented my anti-virus program from being able to download updates and caused a game (Myst IV) to have problems loading. I still had problems after I deleted the update and restored the computer to a previous date. I eventually got the anti-virus program running properly again, and some of the things you had me do took care of the Myst problem. I am very leary of trying to install other "critical updates." Anyway, here's my question. Is it enough to run a firewall, an anti-virus program and weekly scans with Ad-aware, spybot, etc. or is it really important to do the Windows updates as well. I've heard that lots of people have had problems with SP2 and I really don't want to get into that, unless experts like you tell me I'm foolish not to. I don't want to put myself needlessly at risk. However, I'm a firm believer in the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it." I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks again.
I know SP2 has problems with some programs / games. In my opinion, if you keep everything updated and have the programs I listed, you'll be safe. That doesn't mean you won't get infected again. Watch what you download and be careful opening emails. The bad guys have ways of infecting a computer just being online and not doing anything. If you get infected again, we'll be here. Great job  You're more then welcome. Glad we were able to help :wavey:
