Trying to help out a friend whose laptop was almost totally overrun with Spyware. Nothing like teenagers who have Kazaa and other file sharing software running.

Have run multiple passes with the Microsoft Beta but still looks I have an issue with a hijaak-er running to muck up the HOSTS file and there is still the occasional popup happening.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Ken, Welcome to TomCoyote forum, A couple of items first. The HijackThis.exe needs it's own folder to store backups and logs. That's why we usually put the folder on the C:\ so you do not have to look at it until you need it. If you wish to run from the Desktop, make a new folder and put the HJT.exe and there should be a log in that folder like this: Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe. Thanks.

Tell me about this item: C:\WINNT\System32\upnp.exe, I get this: http://upnp.sourceforge.net/ and need you to assure me it is safe.

I suggest you rid yourself of this aol installed item: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe information in the link.
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-4102.html

We have some issues: Winsock Hijacker, Adsrv.com/IeDriver adware variant, and possibly CWS. I am not sure, the About:Blank line could indicate the infection and I will ask you to run CWSHredder to find out if it is there. Please let me know the results of the CWS scan. Let's proceed like this:

1) Follow the instructions carefully in this link to remove the Winsock Hijacker: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial59.html Take your time and be careful. Remember to check "I know what I am doing". The item you are after is: c:\winnt\system32\dolsp.dll in your log. This fix must be used, we can't use HJT on it as it would break your internet connection.

2) Download and save CWShredder at the following link to your desktop. Update it first then click on FIX. Allow it to run and remove anything it locates. Let me know if it finds CWS.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu…WShredder.shtml

3) Once the first two instructions are complete then SCAN with HJT and check the box in front of these items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [avicap32] C:\WINNT\System32\avicap32.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

Follow the instructions in the follow link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore, locate and delete this files:

C:\WINNT\System32\avicap32.exe >>> file

Review the information in the following two links, then rid yourself of all Temp, TIF and Prefetch files.
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm
http://www.safecomputing.umn.edu/guides/tempdirectories.html
Here is a good utility for you to try: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Stay in the thread and post a new log along with any information I asked for and any comments you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks for the reply. Have done what you indicated in your post.

CWShredder found no threat.

I tried to delete the AVICAP32.EXE but only the .dll's are there in WINNT\System32. Same for upnp.exe. That is a bit confusing. Is XP hiding the EXE's from me but showing the DLL's?

Here is the updated log. Please have a look and see if you have other suggestions. Thanks,

Ken

P.S. FWIW, Windows Update has been non-functional on this machine for quite a while it seems. Working with MS on that but they have been no help to date.

Hello Ken, Good job getting the Winsock hijackter off the computer.

I tried to delete the AVICAP32.EXE but only the .dll's are there in WINNT\System32. Same for upnp.exe. That is a bit confusing. Is XP hiding the EXE's from me but showing the DLL's?

If the hidden files are not enabled this could happen, sometimes part of the junk is uninstalled by tools and some of it is left. CCleaner usually picks up remnants.

1) Carefully review and follow the instructions at the following link to be sure the Adware.IEDriver is gone from the computer:
http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/adware.iedriver.html

2) I need to know more about this item:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [upnp] C:\WINNT\System32\upnp.exe. Are you sure you enabled hidden files? Here are the instruction again:
Double click my computers & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders" Click "Apply" then "OK"
You will need to get your friend involved, this could have to do with PlugNPlay. Once you locate the files, right click it and look at the properties. You should be able to tell by who made it and the other information if it is valid or not. I do not want to remove it and have your friend's PlugnPlay stop working. I believe the item is valid, just wish to cover all bases.

3) This item was not in the first log: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [second] C:\WINNT\system32\second.bat I would like you to see what you can find out about it, use the same method as for the above item. You can also use Start, Search then All Files and Folders. Keep in mind if hidden files are not enabled search may not be able to locate the item for you.

4) We need to run our big guns for cleaning out malware. Ad-aware and Spybot can get the areas we can't reach with the HJT tool. I am going to give you links to tutorials and it is important that you take the time to review the information, then to download, update, configure exactly as in the tutorials and remove what is suggested in the tutorials. Make notes of anything these two programs can't remove, the exact name and location of the item. Run Spybot first, if you receive any DSO Exploit notifications, ignore them and please do not activate TeaTimer at this time, once you are clean you may activate it. If Spybot removes anything reboot before running Ad-aware SE Personal.
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html
Make sure you follow all insturctions exactly.

5) C:\WINNT\System32\avicap32.exe. This is missing from the log and could have been part of the hijacker? Search again for the item and if you see avicap32.dll delete it.

6) Did you follow these instruction: Review the information in the following two links, then rid yourself of all Temp, TIF and Prefetch files. Including running CCleaner?

P.S. FWIW, Windows Update has been non-functional on this machine for quite a while it seems. Working with MS on that but they have been no help to date.

Unfortunantly I have this issue myself and many, many hours of troubleshooting with Windows techs has not resolved the issue. April in Nova Scotia (MSN) finally had me remove SP2 and I was able to download Criticals at that point. She wants a reinstall of windows and I am not sure if I will bother. The computer is working great and there is not a lot in SP2 that I need. Now, my suggestion for you would be to try SP2 to see if that corrects the Updates issue. What does Microsoft say? If you decide to try it here is information you must have:
What you should know
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx Here is the Windows Updates troubleshooting if you don't have it.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Post a new log when this is finished, along with any information you can provide.
Thanks…pskelley
Have followed all of your suggestions and run Spy-Bot and Ad-aware.

Here the latest log.

Thanks again for your help. I think we are close (if not completely finished)

Ken
