I have been getting pop-up windows even with pop-up blocker set at HIGH on IE.

I ran Spybot, Ad-aware, and Counterspy. The problem seems to be better, but I would like to be sure I got everything.

Thanks for reviewing my log, and any good advice you can provide.

Mike

I am still gettting various notices whenever I run spybot or counterspy. Can anyone look at my log and tell me what I am missing? Thanks
Hello Mike and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
I couldn't find any information on this file. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

spdapi.exe

If you still are unsure what this file is, please submit it to the following links for a scan.
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Pass] D:\Program Files\Media Pass\MediaPassK.exe
O4 - Global Startup: _Auction Sentry Note from Dad .txt

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.co.dare.nc.us
<< Fix if you did not add this to your Trusted Zone.

O16 - DPF: {2AEBF56B-88C4-7EC4-3B3F-24F1B5AD40FF} - http://public.searchbarcash.com/cab/006/asqkfkgw.cab
O16 - DPF: {F7ADCFE3-AA28-F99E-E665-B13AC332D249} - http://public.searchbarcash.com/cab/351/atrwzpca.cab

Fix these if you or an administrator did not place these restrictions or they were not placed by a program such as Spybot S&D.
06 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

D:\Program Files\Media Pass << Whole Folder

D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\_Auction Sentry Note from Dad .txt

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Alan,
Thanks for the help. Here is what I did:

spdapi.exe

I could not find this file. I searched both hard drives and came up dry. It does not look familiar to me. I clicked it and fixed it. No apparent problems and all my important software seems fine.
********
O4 - Global Startup: _Auction Sentry Note from Dad .txt
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.co.dare.nc.us << Fix if you did not add this to your Trusted Zone.

These two are both okay. I know what they are and why they are there.
********
I did everything else you suggested. Everything seems good right now. The computer seems fine. Web sites are loading like they should and the pop ups are gone. Here is the latest HijackThis log:

Your new log is clean.:)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
