Could someone please help me?

Earlier this evening, I went to a website, and when I did, my internet browser got hung up, and I got a message from my Norton Antivrius that a virus was found on my compter called "bloodhound.php" and later, another message saying that Norton Antivirus was denied access. I tried to close the browser, but I couldn't. Later, I found that there was a file called, "m00.exe" on my desktop.

I shut down my computer and when I re-booted, found that my computer was running really slow, and when I clicked on my Norton Anti-Virus, it wouldn't open. I rebooted the computer, opened in safe mode, and deleted the "m00.exe" files, but I'm sure I didn't get everything involved with it. When I re-started my computer, it was still running extremely slow. Now when I click on the Anti-Virus program, I get repeated messages that the disk needs to be loaded.. if I hit cancel enough times, it will finally open. Also, I noticed in my HJ log, that registry keys were added for "searchforfree.info". I've tried to delete these several times, but they keep coming back.

This has got me so worried and stressed, and I would really appreciate it if someone could look at my HJ logfile below and let me know if they see anything I need to get rid of. Also, any advice on how I can tell if everything the virus may have put on my computer is gone? Thanks so much in advance.

Hello greyspace, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help, please follow these directions:
1) This sounds like a classic case of a drive by shooting. I would exercise more care at what websites you go to, and put that one on your list to avoid at all cost. There are programs that can offer you a great deal of protections by blocking access to your registry, etc., and I will give you that information later. Here is some good information to review now:
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,…i887624,00.html

2) I have checked http://XXXsearchforfree.info/browser/ and it does not appear it is CoolWebSearch related, but I would like you to download, update and run CWShredder from the following link. Please let me know if anything was located by CWShredder in the next post.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu…WShredder.shtml

3) Your copy of Spybot S&D has been compromised, once you are clean, you should download a new copy: Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll (file missing)

4) Open Task Manager then the Processes Tab, end process on these items if they are there:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe
C:\WINDOWS\htmlsync.exe

5) Scan with HijackThis and put a check in the box in front of each of these line items. You will be asked to make a couple of decisions in red.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

Use the information in the following like to enable hidden files for your operating system:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT click on Start, then click on Explore. Locate and Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\isystem.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\htmlsync.exe >>> file

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Stay in this thread, use ADD REPLY, post a new log, please include your comments and any information you think I should have. Include CWS scan information.

Thanks…pskelley

First, thank you so much for taking the time to respond and help me out with this. I really appreciate it.

I went over everything you suggested and think I got it all. I ran CWShredder, and it did not report any coolwebsearch problems. I opened the task manager and found icasserv.exe running and stopped it. I did not see htmlsync.exe running.

I am pasting my new hijack log below:

You had recommended that I delete the below descriptions if I did not set them, but I'm uncertain if I did or not. Is it possible to tell what they do? And would it be okay to just delete them?

Finally, do you happen to have any information as to what the "bloodhound.php" / "m00.exe" does exactly? I've read various things and some say it steals passwords, others say it copies contacts from address books, and I've also read that it just installs spyware and hijacks your browser. Is there any way for me to know for sure that it's completely gone off my system? I'm now basically terrified to log on to anything, or do anything on this computer.

Once again, thanks so much for all of your help. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate it.
Hi greyspace, For some reason your log this time was doublespaced. It is harder for me to read it like that. Make sure you always save it in Notepad. Thanks.

I ran CWShredder, and it did not report any coolwebsearch problems.

Thanks, I was not sure, but thought it better to run it.

And would it be okay to just delete them?

These are restrictions on the internet explorer that keep anyone but the Administrator from making changes in that area. If you are the only user, then somehow you had to set the restrictions. You can delete them if you wish. I you are the Admin, then you set the restrictions. Are there other users on this machine?

Finally, do you happen to have any information as to what the "bloodhound.php" / "m00.exe" does exactly?

This I can't help you with. These items do not identify with the tools we use. We call them random named trojans. I am concerned that Symantec did not remove them in the first place. Are your Norton downloads up to date? Your Symantec scan should have told you the exact name and location of these items. The bad thing is that every Antivirus calls them something different. Take a look at the result of your last Symantec scan and post that information and I may be able to shine more light on the item.
This must be what you were viewing and a search did return this information. Review all of the information in this link, especially the need to purge System Restore files when the trojan is removed. Thanks.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…trojan.moo.html

This item is still in the log and must be removed:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icasServ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe

It was between these others in the last instructions:

MY QUOTE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [isystem] C:\WINDOWS\System32\isystem.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icasServ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ldriver] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ldriver.exe

I see no feedback where you were not able to remove these three items.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\isystem.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\htmlsync.exe >>> file

Please Scan with HJT and check these items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icasServ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
(this is a bad URL, remove this item)
O8 - Extra context menu item: BlogThis! -
http://www.blogger.com/contextScripts/blogthis.pyra

Close all programs but HJT and all windows then click on "Fix Checked"
I do not see any programs in your log that would stop these from being removed. Be careful to check them and remove them. We will have to use Safe Mode to remove them if they do not get removed this time.

Right Click on Start, then click on Explore. Check to make sure these are gone. Please inform me if you cannot complete any item on the fix list.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\isystem.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\htmlsync.exe >>> file

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post a new log, DO NOT double space it. Thanks…pskelley
Once again, thanks for taking a look and helping me out.

When I initially reached the webpage, it froze up and Norton did let me know that it had detected the "bloodhound.php," but for some reason, it still downloaded the "m00.exe" file, and I think it somehow disabled my Norton Anti-Virus (when I rebooted, the auto-protect had been disabled, and I could not open the program). Here is a copy of what my Norton Log says:

3/5/05: 7:57:49 PM: Auto-Protect: bloodhound.exploit.6: Access Denied
Source: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0Z77MG9T\x_[1].php

3/5/05: 7:57:48 PM: Auto-Protect: bloodhound.exploit.6: Repair Failed
Source: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0Z77MG9T\x_[1].php

Should I be worried that Norton doesn't label the file as "deleted?" (I manually deleted the m00.exe file in Safe Mode. I don't know if that makes a difference.)

I should have mentioned previously that I was able to delete the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [isystem] C:\WINDOWS\System32\isystem.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icasServ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\icasServ.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ldriver] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ldriver.exe

Here is a copy of the latest log file (and I apologize about the last log file. I did save it in notepad, so I'm not sure why it double spaced):

Please let me know if you see anything else or if you have any other suggestions.
I have disabled the system restore and will start running another system scan with Norton Anti-virus. Thanks again.
Hello greyspace, Let's be safe and do this, I do not like the way Norton was compromised either. I also need to say that you should not have turned off your system restore until you get an "all clean" from me. If it is still off, turn it back on. If we have a problem and need it, it needs to be running to help us.

Once you are clean, you should reinstall your Antivirus software.

To be safe, I would like you to run these two free online scans. Let me know the complete name and location of anything they can not fix. Follow the instructions, set them to scan the complete system and to fix or clean anything they locate. Let me know what is found.

Once the scans are complete, please follow the directions for your operating system to enter Safe Mode, nothing will be running and these files will be easier to delete:

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content. This can be done like this if you are not sure: Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Delete Files > Check the box to delete all offline content > OK.

Locate C:\Windows\Prefetch. Delete everything in the folder (NOT THE FOLDER) Just the contents. Remember the first restart might be a little slow as windows repopulates Prefetch

This following item is very likely the source of the trouble, it was scheduled for removal in my first post. Once the temp stuff is gone, scan with HJT, check this item and click on "Fix Checked"

O21 - SSODL: laGlkvhgWa - {709E3C04-DA34-96AE-EC9D-434881E520D4} -
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwd.dll

At this point empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post a new log, please let me know if you could not complete anything.
thanks…pskelley
Hi again,

I re-activated the system restore.

I scanned with Panda and it returned these results but said the program could not delete it:

Your PC contains spyware that ActiveScan cannot disinfect. In order to disinfect spyware, it is recommendable to use the solution that best suits your needs.

Incident: Adware: Adware/Media Tickets. Location: Windows Registry

At A Glance:
Common name: MediaTickets

Technical name: Adware/MediaTickets

Threat level: Low

Alias: CDT, Reg/LowZones

Type: Spyware

Subtype: Adware

I made several attempts to scan with trojanscan, however, each time it would scan for a few minutes and then the browsers would close.

I deleted all temp files that I could. I came across this folder and was uncertain as to whether it should be deleted too:

AU_TEMP
I was also unsure if I should delete temp files out of this folder:

comcast/BBClient

I ran into difficulty deleting files out of these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local SettingsTemp\Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5/8zsly30w

I deleted the c:/windows/system32.hwd.dll file

I was able to get the Anti-Virus program running again (after I deleted the m00.exe file in safe mode the other day). Should I still re-install the program after my system has been cleaned out?

Once again, thanks so much.
Hello greyspace,

I re-activated the system restore.

Thanks, I wish to look at one more log, then I will ask you to turn SR off then back on one more time to clear it.

If any files either good or bad are being used, windows will not allow them to be deleted, so when you tell me you had problems deleting some temp files then I wonder if you took your computer to Safe Mode as I suggested.

I was able to get the Anti-Virus program running again (after I deleted the m00.exe file in safe mode the other day). Should I still re-install the program after my system has been cleaned out?

I would say yes, but I do not have that software, I would suggest you call tech support, tell them the issues you experienced and ask them what you should do.

Follow these steps:

1) You HJT log shows that you are clear of malware right now. I will give you some information below that will help you stay that way.

2) Clean Like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates.

3) This is a free tool to clean if you wish: http://www.igorshpak.net/

4) This is information about your Temp files and Prefetch files that you should know:

http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm

5) Before you think about SP2, your computer must be prepared for this download, the information in these links will show you how to do this and how to get a free CD of your own.
SP2 CD

What you should know
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

6) Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hi again, I am running clnmgr right now, but it seems to be taking awhile (it ran all day yesterday and is still only about a 1/3 of the way through.. is that normal?). As soon as it is done, (hopefully soon) I will post a new log. I did delete all the temp files in safe mode, and I wasn't able to delete those files that I posted about. I then tried it in regular mode, with no success, and tried it again in safe mode, and still couldn't. Should I be concerned about this? Also, should I be worried about the Panda software stating that I had something in my registry files that it couldn't delete? I ran it again after reading your response yesterday, and it was still there. Thank you once again for all of your time, help, and information you've provided.
Hello greyspace,

No, this is not normal, how long has it been since you ran maintenance for your computer. If you need information about how to run maintenance, let me know and I will send information. The items you posted earlier were Temporary Internet Files, and I you followed my instructions to clean out all of those files, that would be gone. I also gave you instructions for running in Safe Mode to clean those files and I also suggest when you do maintenance like Scandisk and Defrag you do it in Safe Mode also.

I did delete all the temp files in safe mode, and I wasn't able to delete those files that I posted about. I then tried it in regular mode, with no success, and tried it again in safe mode, and still couldn't. Should I be concerned about this?

Not sure, if you were in Safe Mode they should have deleted, once I look at a new log I will know more. We have other tools we can use, I am using the normal methods first.

Here is a tool you might try that will make it easier to clean out the unneeded trash: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Thanks…pskelley
Hi again,

I attempted to delete those temp files in safe mode again, but for some reason, it just won’t let me.

After running clnmgr for almost two days, I didn’t see any progress. It seemed to just stay at “compacting files.” I’ve run disk cleanup and disk defragmenter before, as well as Norton’s disk cleanup, although the last time was probably six months ago. Because clnmgr didn’t seem to be doing anything, I stopped the program and used ccleaner as you suggested.

ccleaner was able to delete the temp files that I couldn’t delete in safe mode. Also, interestingly enough, after I ran ccleaner, I was able to successfully run clnmgr (not sure why it wouldn’t work before), and it caught some extra stuff that ccleaner didn’t.

After cleaning everything out, I ran panda scan again. This time it returned these results:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/StartPage.AT No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldriver.exe
Adware:Adware/StartPage.AT No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\zlibc.exe

I also ran adaware and got this result:

MRU List Object Recognized!
Location: HKEY_USERS:S-1-5-21-2190867815-2704883870-4021508746-1003\software\microsoft\search assistant\acmru

Should I be concerned about these?

Also, I know you said to delete all temp files, do I need to delete the files in the AU_Temp folder?

Here is the latest HJ scan. Thank you again for all your help.

Hello greyspace, :) I have been into these logs so much this morning my head is spinning. I will post to you and head for a quiet time in my hottub…lol

Your log is clean I see no malware issues. Please get into the all clean information I gave you earlier to learn how to stay clean and safe online. I see I gave you two different cleaners, I installed the http://www.ccleaner.com/ and ran it on my Dell WinXpPro system first before offering it to you and it worked great for me also. I was using a combination of cleanmgr and an old program I got when it was freeware called Clean Disc 2002. I was impressed by what this new cleaner found and removed also. I really can't say why you had the issue with cleanmgr, this is the first time in thousands that anyone has reported an issue with it? Go figure!

I am going to give you the items I run on my computers and all are free. While all software will not run on all computer, these generally seem to cooperate well with the others. You will see these programs mentioned over and over in "All Clean" Information.

Let's look at this first:

MRU List Object Recognized!
Location: HKEY_USERS:S-1-5-21-2190867815-2704883870-4021508746-1003\software\microsoft\search assistant\acmru
Should I be concerned about these?

Scan with Ad-aware, when the scan gets to the end click next, the MRU lists should come up. Check and remove all of them. I do this each time I run Ad-aware even though I have no objects located. While there open your Quarantine and Delete those also. Often scans will locate items quarantine in other software. I would open and dump the quarantine areas of any software you are running that has it.

Adware:Adware/StartPage.AT No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\ldriver.exe
Adware:Adware/StartPage.AT No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\zlibc.exe

I can't return any information but I believe these are disinfected, could be bits and pieces of something in the registry. Try what I said to make sure there is no bad stuff quarantined that can be seen by a scan, then try another scan perhaps with other software. Here are a few free ones;

I would also like for you to purge System Restore. Something may be hiding in there, scans will often see stuff in SR and can't touch it. The only way to rid yourself of it is to purge (turn off/then on) Here are manual instructions for doing this.

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

And a link if you wish, please make sure you use the information for your O/S

Once again, thanks.

I think maybe the:

HKEY_USERS:S-1-5-21-2190867815-2704883870-4021508746-1003\software\microsoft\search assistant\acmru

Is just something the computer's logged after I used the "search for" function in windows explorer. I don't know for sure though.

I have one more question I'm hoping you can answer. If I plan to re-install both Norton Systemworks and Norton Anti-Virus (as a safety precaution, in case these programs were compromised), should I shut down system restore before or after I re-install? And when re-installing, do I need to uninstall the programs first? Or just have the programs over-write the previous ones?

I do not use Norton and would defer to Symantec tech support for these kinds of questions. From my limited knowledge I was under the impression that Norton AV was part of Norton System Suites. If that is the case, you would not want to have two AV programs running at the same time. As far a your System Restore questions, I see no reason to turn of System Restore to do what you wish to do. That is what it is for, if something happens during the install, so you can go back prior to the install, here is some information about System Restore:
