Norton Won't Launch, Computer Reboots Very Slowly

Something has killed my Norton program. I tried to uninstall/reload but it told me I had 3 files in quarantine and did I want to delete them. When I answered "yes", the uninstall closed itself. I was afraid if I answered no, something in quarantine would reek havoc. I ran a hjt log and found 3 norton O23 entries with file missing on the end of the string. hjt could not fix. I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous and I've reached the end of my comfort level. Time to call in the heavy artillery. No other programs show any infections - Spybot, AVG, VundoFix, etc. Thanks in advance for your help. By the way, since norton is dead, do I have firewall protection? Uncle Ed
Hello uncle ed and Welcome to TomCoyote,

Hi uncle ed,

What is the version of your Norton Internet Security?
Also when you use the Internet, what do you use for your browser?- like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.?

Also it appears that your anti-virus is not working like you said but I believe you do have a firewall. Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
Test Firewall
iexplore.exe

Recommendation for iexplore.exe:
iexplore.exe should not be disabled, required for essential applications to work properly

This is the first time I have seen iexplore.exe disabled with msconfig. Did you have problems with iexplore.exe?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\iexplore.exe]
"key"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run"
"item"="iexplore"
"hkey"="HKLM"
"command"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe"
"inimapping"="0"

Your log shows the following:

USERDOMAIN=COMPUTERROOM
USERNAME=Edward Offenberger
USERPROFILE=C:\Documents and Settings\Edward Offenberger
windir=C:\WINDOWS

– System Information ———————————————————-

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (build 2600) SP 2.0

– User Profiles —————————————————————

Edward Offenberger (admin)
Administrator.COMPUTERROOM (new local, admin)

The User Profile Administrator.COMPUTERROOM (new local, admin) looks different from what I normally see for logs.

Could you do the following please so I can check something:

Please logon to your computer using the Administrator.COMPUTERROOM

Then go to start=>Run=>enter the following in the box: cmd
A window should open
Please copy and paste the following bold text into the window;
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" >> C:\look2.txt

reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" >> C:\look2.txt

reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment" >> C:\look2.txt

reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment" >> C:\look2.txt

Then navigate to the C:\look2.txt and copy the contents and paste it into your reply.
I bought Norton 2006 and downloaded 2007 upgrade this year. I use InternetExplorer for browser Firewall test showed no problems. Hoorah!!! I was not aware iexplore was disabled or else I forgot about it. How could I run it as my browser if it is disabled? There are also entries in msconfig that are a series of square characters. I remember unchecking those because they looked suspicious. Again, I know jsut enough to be dangerous. I will now logoff and logon as admin, as you requested, and repost.
Administrator.COMPUTERROOM is not there anymore as a user account. I'm sure it used to be. When we bought the PC it asked for a name and thats what we gave it. You re-enabled that entry iexplore.exe in msconfig right! Did that help?

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post (reply) with the results along with a fresh hijackthis log.

Well that Kapersky scan looks good. Everything infected was Quarantined by Norton. I am assuming that you are not having difficulty other than with Norton and slow boot-up.

Okay Norton will not launch. You installed AVG then? Will AVG run? But from Deckard's scanner no Anti-virus application was detected as on. Did you install AVG after Norton would not launch?

You should only have one firewall application and one anti-virus application installed.

AUOptions is scheduled to auto-install.
Windows Internal Firewall is disabled.

FW: Norton Internet Security v2007 (Symantec Corporation)

I downloaded free version of avg after norton quit. AVG is running an auto-scan right now so I know it is running. It just found something called ntoskrnl.exe in windows\system32. It's calling it a change. One other problem - When I enabled iexpore it started coming up on reboot and would not connect to interent. I had to un-check it again. Also my task bar at bottom of screen is now tan instead of blue. yikes!
I don't remember when problem started. Now I lost my printer. Control panel/printer & other hardware is EMPTY!!! I tried to add it back in but I got an error saying the print spooler service not running. fun,fun,fun.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe shows in your first hijackthis log but did not show in your last log. I do not know what happened to it.

What is spoolsv.exe?

A Microsoft Windows file stored in the c:\windows\system32 or c:\winnt\system32 directory that has the file description: "Spooler SubSystem App". This file is responsible for how Microsoft Windows handles print and fax jobs on your computer.
