Running AdAware in Safe mode did not get rid of AltnetBDE. I did a search on this computer for lsass.exe and found 4 instances: 1. LSASS.EXE.0D17C8F2.pf C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch 27 KB PF File 2. lsass C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 13 KB Application 3. lsass C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\386 13 KB Application 4. lsass C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\iae 592 KB Application
If you are comfortable in the registry, do a search for Altnet and delete all instances of it.

Go to Start < Run and type regedit. Click Edit < Find and type AltnetBDE.

The first three lsass.exe files you listed are legit Microsoft files.
I'll wait to here back from Metallica on the fourth file to see if it is good or bad.
Alan, I can't delete AltnetBDE from the registry even if I am in safe mode. I thought the same thing about the lsass.exe files, especially when the one was so much larger.
The lsass.exe you sent me is indeed another nasty.

This is the report I got:

seems to be a search hijacker and maybe more
Hijacked to a search on a website that is disabled (nothing on it)

Also noticed it runs itself twice - it might be that one watches the other
Or that might be a biproduct of Armadillo protecting it (probably is)

Armadillo is the packer that was used. Note the remark that it runs twice, which might explain some of the things you reported.

HTH,

Pieter
Click on this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit and extract it from the zip file.

Reboot the computer into Safe Mode. Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iae\lsass.exe

Check the option for "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'yes'.

After the computer reboots, delete the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\iae

Reboot the computer a few times and connect to the Internet at least once between the reboots. I want to make sure nothing comes back on the computer.

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
I think you waxed the lsass thing. :) AltnetBDE is still there though. :(

Glad to hear the other bad items went away so easily.

Now I'll try to get rid of the last item for you.

Download Registry Search by Bobbi Fleckman and unzip it into its' own folder. Doubleclick RegSearch.exe to start it. Enter AltnetBDE in the search section (top) and click "Ok". Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved in the program's folder as well). Post this text.
"AltnetBDE" doesn't actually reside in the registry. There it is just called "Altnet" The "BDE" gets added on AdAware scans. Here is the logfile from Registry Search REGEDIT4 ; Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman ; Version: 1.0.1.4 ; Results at 3/25/2005 8:55:49 AM for strings: ; 'altnet' ; Strings excluded from search: ; (None) ; Search in: ; Registry Keys Registry Values Registry Data ; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\AltnetDM] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MyWay\myBar\partner] "name"="Altnet Points Manager" ; End Of The Log…
Copy and paste the following text into a text editor such as Notepad.

Save this text as RemoveAltnet.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on RemoveAltnet.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\AltnetDM]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MyWay\myBar\partner]

Cross your fingers and hope Adaware comes up clean.
Executed you instructions with ease but they only partially removed the problem. As you can see, from the AdAware snippet and Registry Search logfile below, Altnet is still in the registry. I tried going back into the registry to manually delete the entry after running the merge file but that didn't work either.

Found a possible solution here.

Right click the registry key that has Altnet and select permissions, then advanced and see if you (meaning whoever you are logged in as) have Permission = Full permission and Apply To = keys and subkeys.

If not subkeys, click the owner tab, highlight your name and check the box to replace owner, apply and OK. Now you are back on the Security tab! Highlight your name on the security tab and check the Allow full control box. Apply and click advanced again and you should have another entry for your name with keys and subkeys.

Now try deleting the Altnet Folder again.

Do this for only these two keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard]

You can delete the removealtnet.reg file on your desktop.
ALTNET IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) Ran an Adaware scan and it came back clean. I think we finally have this computer cleaned up. Thank you so much for your persistence and all of you help! Happy Easter Dennis
Glad to hear the computer is finally clean. :)
I would suggest changing all of your passwords on your computer now that it is clean. The first item that Metallica mentioned was a login/password stealing trojan.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\Every username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
