Dear Phil

Sorry about this pn going saga but here goes

1. I am the only one using the computer

2. The XMAS.exe I have now removed in safemode thought had been removed before interesting it wasnt. Also interesting is that it was modified on 20 Dec 1997 and created on 27 January 2005 - maybe because transferred from old to this new computer

3. Problem was after highlighting would not let me right click or use control C simply was not possible to copy and to paste it - downloaded the latest update of the program. Maybe because have a wireless keyboard was the problem - who knows

4. Did all the removal temp files in Safe mode etc had all hidden files enabled
Removed the Parallel Tasking Folder

5. Ran Killbox.exe did everything and follwed instructions - came up with

PendingFileRemoveOperationsRegistryData has been removed by external process
Had to reboot the machine myself.

Log for today is as follows:

Still see this C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\BN91AC.EXE in there what hell is going on?

Just off to work so will not be able to look at until evening

Cheers
David

Hi David, It has me scratching my head. A couple of things. You have these two programs and they might try to stop changes. If you get any warning from them, you may have to turn them off while removing stuff.

InterMute\SpySubtract
Microsoft AntiSpyware

Next is TrojanHunter, I am informed of this by one of our experts:

Check to make sure that TrojanHunter was updated before the user ran it… It needs to be manually updated in the trial version, so it is quite possible that wasn't done…

If you did not update before running TrojanHunter, would you do so and run the scan again to see if it comes up with anything.

We may have to run this tool to see if there is a RootKit infection. I am not familiar with the tool but others I know are. I am running it on my machine now. Review the information and I will let you know if you need to download and run the scan and post the log after I get more feedback from other experts about the current situation and information from you about the TrojanHunter scan after it is updated.

Here is that link to the information and download link. Just review the information and hold at that point. Do post information from the Trojan Hunter scan. Thanks…Phil

Dear Phil

Well we may be getting somewhere. Redidi a number of things cleaning up etc now what has happened is as follows:

Updated TrojanHunter and ran results are:
Registry scan
No suspicious entries found
Inifile scan
No suspicious entries found
Port scan
No suspicious open ports found
Memory scan
No trojans found in memory
File scan
Error: Directory not found: D:\
No trojan files found

Then ran MWAV again and we now have this seems to have created a folder in C:\

Where did this C:\!submit file come from - is it because the Killbox did not deal with it?

File C:\!Submit\traceroute18467.exe infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar.er" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

I am going to try doing a killbox of this in safe mode to see if that solves it.

A colleague also suggested running and operating oin DOS may help but getting out of my depth here

Have downloaded the Rootkit file

The log is as follows

Many thanks for all the immense help you are giving I will donate let me assure you

Sorry has been a heavy day at work (I am Dean of a Business School).

Cheers
David

OK David, No worries Mate abound the timing, I am -5 hours of GMT we folks are all over the world. I received a little feedback and we will have another go at it.

Where did this C:\!submit file come from - is it because the Killbox did not deal with it?

You may delete that file, KillBox must move stuff to a file for a last check before deleting the item. That item is no doubt the trojan causing our many headaches. Since I see the name, I would also like to run a Symantec tool they designed for the 1stBar.
Then we will need to get rid of the C:\Windows Temp item that keeps mutating. I want you to understand the reason I take you to save mode is that if items are running windows will stop the removal. Once of my teachers in the UK is also concerned about your intermute product possibly blocking the fix. I assured him we are not using HJT but it may be blocking something anyway as well as the Microsoft product.
Having said this, I will leave it to your option if you want to work in safe mode, you know by now what we need to accomplish. I also wish to make sure you know that the files created by MWAV, etc. can all be deleted when you are sure you no longer need them for troubleshooting.

Let's do this.

1) Delete this: File C:\!Submit\traceroute18467.exe infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar.er" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

2) Download and run the tool, record the results for the next post.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxIstbar.exe

3) I'll toss in the list of tools in case you even need them: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…tools.list.html

4) Now please disable these:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gcasServ] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [THGuard] "C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2\THGuard.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: SpySubtract.lnk = C:\Program Files\InterMute\SpySubtract\SpySub.exe

5) Open HJT and choose "Open Misc Tools Section" then choose "Delete a file on Reboot", navigate to that file: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ZAC37D.EXE and follow the instructions so that it will be deleted. Then reboot and post a new log when you can. Appreciate the feedback and your thoughts, afterall we are both in this together. :) Cheers, Phil
Dear Phil

You have me getting up early to do this. Well

1. Deleted the C:\!submit file

2. Ran the Symantec software result
Symantec Adware.Istbar Removal Tool 1.0.7

C:\System Volume Information: (not scanned)
Adware.Istbar has not been found on your computer.

3. Thanks for the tools could be useful - who knows this getting frustrating

4. Disabled the three spyware programmes

5.Opened HJT and ran in normal mode removed C:\windows\temp\DZ41EC then reboot ran HJT log and temp file still there

So redid in Safemode and removed C:\windows\temp\WOE912 (dayam thing there looks like a dog) and reboot log as follows:

I am sorry this is taking so long and hope that I am doing everything correctly - following what you say to the letter.

Thans so much for this help - it is amaing

Cheers
David

David, I just do not know. What symptoms exactly are you experiencing? I am going to have to wait for more information before I can proceed. You can run the RootKit tool and post that log if you wish, perhaps someone will see something in it. I am not sure how to proceed and will respond as soon as I have some direction. Thanks…pskelley
Dear Phil Thanks for the reply. I will run RootKit tonight when I get home. The symptons only seem to appear in Goole searches using Internet Explorer. When I do a Google search I get the first 9 results coming up to do with modelling agencies, anti spy ware etc before I get the real results of the search. The same 9 or so can appear in one search after another and occasionally they change or a new one is added. I in frustration downloaded Firefox and am using that - I do not have any problem with Google searches in Firefox - the problem only appears to be with Internet Explorer. Cheers David

Dear Phil

My apologies for keeping hassling you on this one. I have redone alnmost everything from the start that you suggested but still I get that temp exe file.

Only thing that seems to be different is when I run AdAware then it seems to stop scanning at IE Favorites which seems a bit strange.

The google searchs in IE are still producing the 8-9 randon results that are not related in terms of topic to the main search.

I will have a go at doing everything again I have cleaned files out ensured all temp are deleted etc etc. Most frustrating.

Cheers
David

Hell David, I have suggestions from some other folks we can try and I will list them in 1, 2, 3 order, but first I would like to take a moment to thank the folks from different forums who offered suggestions. I will not list each name separately as you folks know who your are. Many thanks for taking the time to help David with his issue….Phil

I will let you know that at least one individual who has worked with the RootKit log agrees with me that nothing looks wrong in it. Here are some suggestions we can try to see if they will help. My thoughts are in red.

1) Might be instructive to see exactly what page he gets to when he does a Google search. Perhaps have him go to the Google main page in his normal way using IE, then right click on the page and select Properties. Look at the Address (URL) listed.
Then do a simple search such that his bogus first group of items come up, right click on the page and note the Address (URL).
Perhaps knowing where he is being redirected will help find the cause.

(Post any information you come up with)

2) Try a log from pv. I think that the log for explorer.exe would be enough.
Have you asked the user to check the properties of the file…. I know it's a long shot but it might give something.
(Go to the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ETE926.EXE file and right click on it, give us any information available under all tabs)

Thanks to Shadowwar for this tool and thanks to ChrisRLG for this tutorial:
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=549

Download this zip.

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/pv.zip
Please unzip it to the desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.

After unzipped go to the desktop. Open the pv folder. Double click on the runme.bat

A dos window will open. Please select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing enter.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this post.

3) run killbox and have him use the browse feature to add every file to be deleted on reboot in the temp dir, always clicking no to the prompt to reboot. exit restart pc.
(Since we only have the one it in C:\Windows\Temp, we have tried this one)
maybe a regsearch for that executable and a service filter log.
(After we try 1 and 2 we will consider these two options)

4) You could test the temp file here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ to see, if a scanner will find something in that file.
You may also try to get that file. Maybe lonny is able to find something in it.
(I tried to upload the file from here as was unable to do so, perhaps you will be able to do so.)

I will try to get instructions for sending the file to Lonnie if I can.
Thanks
pskelley
Dear Phil

I am getting to owe you a great deal here is the latest on the information requested etc.

Cheers
David

Hello David,

I am getting to owe you a great deal here is the latest on the information requested etc.

No worries Mate, I feel like we are "Brothers in Arms"…lol…my only fear is that we are both so deep into all of this information that this is something simple we just can't spot through all of the facts. We may need a fresh point of view from this end?? I know a lot of great folks are watching our progress and many good suggestions are coming in. I will continue to pass these suggestions on to you as long as you wish to continue.

Feedback about the recent post:

A thought: Open http://www.google.co.nz/ then click preferences to the right. Change SafeSearch Filtering to Use strict filtering (Filter both explicit text and explicit images) and save Preferences. Who knows, I will try thing right now. You might also contact Google NZ with a complaint and information about the problem and perhaps they will know something? I am looking for a NZ contact us for you.
http://www.google.co.nz/intl/en/help/faq.html Does this occur with other search engines and IE? If you contact Google, give them the information about where you are being diverted to. Look over all possible setting for Google to make sure you are not allowing something you should not.

I have been fixated on virus/trojan. I would like you to run the CWShredder to rule out CWS. Download, update and choose FIX, let it run and let me know if it locates anything. You can tuck that tool away on the C:\CWS keep it updated and we will hope you never need it.

My experience with the pv.zip log is limited, but I can not see anything amiss. If anyone tracking this thread does, I would appreciate you posting into the tread at anytime and I am sure David agrees.

I have RegSeeker on this machine if that is any help

Use any tool you have onboard, then post the information you locate.

http://virusscan.jotti.org: I am looking at this scan and see items I am unsure of. If I get information I will post.

NEW Suggestions: Did we run TrojanHunter in safe mode. If not, give that a try.

(Suggestions)
Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Open ADS Spy". Uncheck all three mark. Click "Scan". When the scan is completed please click "Save log". Save it to a place where you can find it.
Please add this log to your next post.

The other tool I like to use for the info it gives is the startup list in HJT. It gives quite a lot of info and I do not see it used a lot.
Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Generate StartupList log". Check mark "List also minor sections (Full)" Notepad will open with a log in it. Please add this log to your next post.

Let's try what is posted and see if it turns up any information we need. Proceed are you own pace, I am sleeping when you are doing this anyway. :P Cheers Mate.
Hi David, Hot off the presses

Try this: Navigate to this item C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\OLC4C2.EXE then
right click > Send to > Compressed (zipped) Folder > attach it to email and send here: [removed] No promises but they will take a look at it.

Another possibility: http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?date=2005-03-07
The storm centre have found out about some DNS poisoning.
Basicly the DNS server has been compromised not the PC. Google was one of the websites whos address (at the DNS) was changed.

Try to change the DNS server that he uses to one say that you use.
If that works this DNS server is compromised not him.

My Comment:
In reference to the above information, you may want to check with your ISP to make sure this has not occured. They should be able to help you?

Cheers Mate, Phil
David, It looks like we need to look elsewhere for the source of the problem. This is what the Windows\Temp item reports: Little analysis from Normans Sandbox: OLC4C2.EXE : Not detected by sandbox (Signature: NO_VIRUS) [ General information ] * **IMPORTANT: PLEASE SEND THE SCANNED FILE TO: [removed] - REMEMBER TO ENCRYPT IT (E.G. ZIP WITH PASSWORD)**. * File length: 172099 bytes. [ Changes to registry ] * Creates value "OfficeScan95"=""pccwin97.exe"" in key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices". * Creates key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "OFCNT Service Name"="ntrtscan" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "OFCNT Process Name"="ntrtscan.exe" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "Dog Process Name"="ofcdog.exe" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "Default Retry Count"="" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "Default Retry Interval"="" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "Max Log"="" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Deletes value "PrevName" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". * Sets value "PrevName"="9&9p92.1=+Bd;" in key "HKLM\Software\TrendMicro\OfcWatchDog". [ Process/window information ] * Creates a mutex . * Will automatically restart after boot (I'll be back…). * Creates an event called OFCDOGUNLOCKDONE Seems we will not get be able to remove that item without removing all of the TreadMicro software…lol C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\OfficeScan Client\OfcPfwSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\OLC4C2.EXE That would appear to mean that we have a clean log and will have to look elsewhere for the source of the problem. This new information about DNS server issue might well be the place to look. This would mean your computer is not the reason, but rather Google or even your DNS server. I will hold off posting any addition information until you have had time to review this information and let me know if there is anything else I can do. Cheers Mate…Phil
