Hello DBuisson, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are looking for help please follow these directions. I can't say for sure that your infection is causing your Google issue, but lets remove those issues and see what happens. Please review this information so you will have a better understanding of what we are up against:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\BA3F0.EXE
Unidentifable trojan

C:\Program Files\Parallel Tasking\ptask.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ptask.exe-3970.html
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojdloadergr.html

Added by unidentified adware- recognized by Kaspersky antivirus as Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.adg

1) Please look at the HJT.exe on your desktop. It must have a folder to store backups and logs. If the .exe is without a folder, please RIGHT click on a blank spot on the desktop and make a NEW FOLDER, call it HJT and more the HJT.exe and any logs there into that folder.

2) Please assure me in your next post that this is a valid item: C:\Program Files\Star Alliance Timetable\StarUpdater.exe

3) You have a program onboard: C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe that may interfere with HJT. When we remove items with HJT please remember to turn this program off.

4) Because this started with adware we need to run our big guns for cleaning out malware. Ad-aware and Spybot can get the areas we can't reach with the HJT tool. I am going to give you links to tutorials and it is important that you take the time to review the information, then to download, update, configure exactly as in the tutorials and remove what is suggested in the tutorials. Make notes of anything these two programs can't remove, the exact name and location of the item. Run Spybot first, if you receive any DSO Exploit notifications, ignore them and please do not activate TeaTimer at this time, once you are clean you may activate it. If Spybot removes anything reboot before running Ad-aware SE Personal.
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html

5) Now I want you to use these free online scans to kill the trojans, set them to clean/fix and remember we need the complete name and location of anything the scans locate but can't kill.

http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

6) Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer, stay in this same thread, use ADD REPLY. Post a new log along with your comments…any information from the scans you think we should know. We will have more to do.

Thanks…pskelley

Dear PSKelley

I really appreciate so much all your help. I have followed all the instructions to the letter as you laid out and the new log follows at the end of this.

1. Dealt with HJT
2. Yes C:\Program Files\Star Alliance Timetable\StartUpdater.exe is a valid item
3. Turned MicroSoft AntiSpyware off before dealt with everything
4. Ran both Spybot and AdAware as per the turorials - no problems - 4 tracking items in Spybot that cleaned easily

I really do appreciate all the help you are giving can I contribute
Hello DBuisson, I appreciate all of the information you gave me. I did not get any information about the trojan we were after. Here is the item and I no longer see it in the log:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\BA3F0.EXE
This one appears in the Ad-aware scan
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\jk3881.exe
And this one is in the log.
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\AO5D86.EXE

They are all in the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ and it may be that they have not started to infect your computer yet? I would like you to do this:

Follow the instruction in the following link for your Operating System to enter the Safe Mode:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

Once you are in Safe Mode RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore. Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Hopefully the trojans will go along with the balance of the temp stuff. Be very sure nothing is left in the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder. You can speed the process by clicking on Edit at the top then Select All, the hit the delete key. When finished, empty the recycle bin and restart to normal mode. Surf a little to see how you are running, then post a new log for me to review. Include any feedback you think I should have. I see you are online, I will wait for the next log to see if the trojans are gone.
Thanks…pskelley
Dear PSKelley

I am becoming eternally grateful to you but appear not there yet.

The problem is with a Google Search in Internet explorer I continue to get these nine or so unrelated common search returns each search I do. This is not the case when I use Google through Mozilla Firefox

Cheers
David

Hello David, We still have one of these items in your Windows\temp folder, can you assure me you left nothing in any of the temp folders? Here is the bugger: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\IV4862.EXE.
I would also like you to make sure this item is valid, this is a known proxy server: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy.staff.otago.ac.nz:3128

1) This is a free trial for a trojan scanner, please download and follow the directions, report back with the results: http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/ Would you run a full scan then have anything located fixed, I would like you to post the log of anything located so I can view it.

2) Next download Dllcompare from here: http://downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe
follow the directions below then post that log.
Thanks to Option^Explicit for this tool.

Usage:

Start Program and Click the Run Locate.com and wait a few seconds til the scan says complete.(default settings usually are sufficient)

Click the Compare button to start the sorting process.

Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist" as where Files in the bottom section have some form of problem being accessed.
There will be only minimal, if any files listed there… once that Compare scan is complete, and you find you have a few files listed in the lower box.

Click on any of the listed entries to select it.. Right click the mouse and use the Option Rescan

This will run the file through the standard Windows Find and if it does exist, will be removed from the list (to further filter the found objects)

After that if you are left with files that are still not found, click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post that log to whatever support forum is helping you, as they will better determine whether any of the remaining files need to be removed or not.

3) Download this tool and save it to your desktop. Do not use it until I give you specific instructions for doing so.

Thanks…pskelley

OK David, I have a plan. I consulted with an expert friend and he thinks the item that is spawning the C:Windows\Temp\ items is in your Prefetch folder. Let's hope he is right because my next step is a long scan here: http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp When I ran it on my computer to try it out it took two hours. They do not even remove anything for you as it is a pay per view item…lol. But the log in the small pane shows anything bad on the computer so you can remove it manually. Let's hope we don't need it and you can look it over if you wish. Just hold tight on the KillBox also. We can kill the running item, but that will not stop what is recreating them.

I do really really appreciate what you are doing see you are in Clearwater was there two weeks ago now back in the depths of the south of New Zealand

Whoa..I have been here going on twenty years now, I live ten minutes from Clearwater Beach. Seach for WebCams when time permits and you can see lots of the area, even the beaches. If you can't locate them, let me know and I will send the links. If I had known you were coming…lol.

OK…back to business, are you familiar with the Prefetch folder? Here is a couple of links that explain it: http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html and http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1683520,00.asp
I would like you to do this in safe mode so nothing we are trying to delete will be running.

Follow the instruction in the following link for your Operating System to enter the Safe Mode:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html Look for and locate the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and delete everything in it. You can click EDIT at the top and Select All, then hit Delete on the keyboard. Do the same thing with the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ Since nothing is running you should have no issue deleting everything in the folders. As mentioned in the information links, your restart might be slow until Windows repopulates the Prefetch folder with the valid items needed. Once this is done, post a new log, let's hope that will be the last one.
Thanks…Phil
Dear Phil

Really enjoyed Clearwater Beach a great place and did not have long enough there was there for a conference.

Many thanks for the help - right have dealt with the PreFetch and the Windows Temp - all done in safe mode

In fact also ran MWTI last night (ran it overnight) and picked up a Xmas.exe file that was suspicious.

Anyway the current log is as follows:

I see there is still the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\EGB53A.EXE in there this time.

Hello David, Was the scan time: Time Elapsed: 00:02:55 two minutes and 55 seconds, then this would not be a full scan. Here are the instructions: download mwavscan. Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply. As I said, the scan took about two hours on DSL, I was going to exhaust a few other areas, including to ask fellow removers for feedback. Seems the malware writers keep sending newer and newer junk at us and it is hard to keep up with it all. If you have started the scan as a recent post seems to indicate, remember I only need the information in the summary at the bottom as the entire log is hugh. Thanks mate.
Dear Phil Done the scan dayam thing wont let me copy them to paste so here they are that came up C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\Office ScanClient\Suspect\traceroute 18467.exe infected by 'Trojan Downloader.Win321stBarrier" Virus Action Taken: No Action Taken C:\Temp\dbuisson\My Documents\Davids Personal Documents\XMAS.EXE tagged as not-a-virus Simulator.WIN16.MessageMates: No Action Taken The thing is I thought I had moved the last one and it was created in 1997 though appears may have been modified recently. Let me know the next steps. Cheers David
G'Day Mate, I first want to make sure you do not have multiple users on this machine. If this should be the case, follow the instructions later in this post.

Have you had a look at the MWAV results?
Just a couple of questions. Earlier I posted these as folders to empty in Safe Mode:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

1) And the MWAV scan shows this item in the scan which is not bad and you even mentioned the file yourself. Will you take a look at see what it is and how you missed deleting it since it is in a Temp folder. Could I have feedback on that. Thanks.
C:\Temp\dbuisson\My Documents\Davids Personal Documents\XMAS.EXE tagged as not-a-virus Simulator.WIN16.MessageMates: No Action Taken

2) I am interested in why you had a problem moving the log to this thread, I have never had to do this since my scan was clean and it will help in the future if I understand why you had this problem. Do you use the Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply instructions? Thanks.

3) This appears to be the problem:
C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\Office ScanClient\Suspect\traceroute 18467.exe infected by 'Trojan Downloader.Win321stBarrier" Virus Action Taken: No Action Taken

Please enter safe mode and make sure all Temp folders are empty.
Make sure hidden files are enabled, look for this item:

C:\Program Files\Parallel Tasking\

If it is there delete the folder in red.

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\Office ScanClient\Suspect\traceroute 18467.exe

When asked if you should reboot select YES since there is only one item to kill. Post a new log, IF you do have other users, I will need to see a log from each user. Make sure they are clearly marked.

Thanks…Phil
