Hello!

I can’t get rid of Possible Browser Hijack, detected by MS AntiSpyware Beta 1 (location: IE Search Bar). Also, McAfee (Build 9.0.10, Engine Version 4.4.00, DAT Version 4.0.4430) detects Trojan (StartPage –DU.dll) sometimes and removes.

I scanned my computer with a number of antispyware programs and they didn’t find any problem. Turning off the System Restore and running my PC in safe mode didn’t solve the problem.
PC: Dell Inspiron 1000
OS: MS Windows XP SP 2 (Build 2600)
Processor: Mobile Intel ® Celeron ® CPU 2.20GHz

The anispyware programs used:

Ad-Aware (Build 1.05)
McAfee AntiSpyware (Version 6.00.1119.0)
SpySubtract (Version 2.48)
SpySweeper (Version 3.5)
Spybot 1.3
MS Malicious Software Removal Tool
CWShredder 2.00

Please, check my log! Thank you!

Hello Giulia, Welcome to TomCoyote and sorry for the wait. I have looked your log over and I can see nothing wrong with the exception that it looks like you have no folder around the HJT.exe on the Desktop. If I am correct, RIGHT click and make a new folder called HJT and move the HJT.exe and the log that should be there into that folder. This is where backups will be stored if we have to use HJT.
Now let me point out that HJT can't see everything and there could be something hiding and we will take a few easy steps before using tools that take a while to run. Let's try this:

1) Review this information then get rid of Temp files: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm

2) Review this information then get rid of Prefetch files: http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html#

3) Now download and run the small utility to see what was missed: http://www.ccleaner.com/

4) Run these two free online scans, have them fix or clean and make sure you select at least the C:\. You may have to allow ActiveX, do so as both programs are safe. If they locate anything they can't remove I need the exact name and location of the item/items.

Stay in this thread and post a new log along with any information from the scans, your comments and any questions I may be able to help with.

Hi pskelley, Thanks so much for your time and help. I followed your instructions and no infected files were found. Also, for the first time during the last two months, MS AntiSpyware detected zero problems! Thank you again for the great help! Giulia
Hello Giulia, This is great to hear. There could have been something running from Temp or Prefetch we couldn't see with HJT or perhaps the scans got something. HJT is a great tool but it can not see everything.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

To be safe, I would like you to do a purge of System Restore to make sure something bad is not hiding in there to infect you if you need to use SR. Follow these instructions:

Good luck and safe surfing
