The URL prosearching.com has become my default IE home page. I have used Adaware and my computer has Macafee online antivirus installed.
Your site and Hijackit was recommended by Dell community forum. I'd appreciate any help on what to do next.

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\windows\questmod-1.dll <— file

Delete these if you didn't recognize them, and fixed their log entries:

c:\program files\moreresults <— FOLDER

c:\program files\title five mode <— FOLDER

c:\program files\userch~1 <— FOLDER
(Unsure of full folder name. Starts with "userch")

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)
I have performed all the tasks you recommended. But I did'nt find the questmod-1.dll file. I tried to find it throuch search utility of my windows XP in all files and folders including hidden files. The sticky URL prosearching.com is still there. Please see the new HighjackThis log and advise for further action. Thanks so much for your time.

:weee:
I see that the "prosearching" stuff came back.

You also have a few new malware entries.

I see "LOP" infection in there.

These have all the earmarks of a LOP infection (and they just showed up in this log):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [JumpInternetTheSite] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\plus chic jump internet\mags error.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MEMO COMP] C:\PROGRA~1\TITLEF~1\Curb Stop.exe

Lets' try Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware.

If you already have them, try them one more time with these setting:

Download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system.  Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de  (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates.  Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well).  Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES.  Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED.  When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, ALWAYS check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware.  THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and  "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT.  This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?"  Reboot again.

Post a new log file, and we'll see what's left that needs fixing. :)
I have scanned my system with Spybot and Adaware as per your instructions. After rebooting, I ran the HighjackThis and got the new Logfile. Please review it and let me know what to remove from it. The IE home page problem seems to be resolved for now. I did not remove the Adaware scanned objects and files right away but quarantined them first and then removed them. Is it OK or shall I remove the quarantined files too?
Thanks :)

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!

Fix these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.igdbtwaryzeafhpnjwu.com/mnYOEtW…VSyTAHHGsoQ.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [JumpInternetTheSite] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\plus chic jump internet\mags error.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MEMO COMP] C:\PROGRA~1\TITLEF~1\Curb Stop.exe

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\plus chic jump internet <— FOLDER

C:\PROGRAM FILES\TITLEF~1 <— FOLDER
(Unsure of full folder name. Begins with "TITLEF")

Reboot and post a new log file. :)
The folder TITLEF is not there in the Program files. I've removed other stuff. New Logfile is here for your scrutiny.

Thanks again and again and again :D

YAY!

The log is clean now…

You're welcome again, and again, and again… :D

You know what they say… "Rome wasn't built in a day", and sometimes these infections take a few iterations to get completely off your system.

But in the end, it's worth it, and you did an excellent job!!!!

I'll leave you with my list of things to consider to help prevent future infections.

GOD bless!!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
