click Start>Run and type regedit tap enter key.

Regedit will open. At the top of the window click Edit> Find> then copy and paste the following into the window.

cvshost.exe

Then click find now.
When you find the entry right click on it and select delete, answer ok at the prompt.

Next, press "F3" to continue searching, if another instance is found, repeat the above steps, until you see the "completed searching" message.
Sorry it took me so long to reply. I didn't get an email notification of your reply… When I do a search, I get the following files: (Default) - REG_SZ - (value not set) Description - REG_SZ - provides automatic configuration for the LAN adapters DisplayName - REG_SZ - Local Area Network Provider Fix ErrorControl - REG_DWORD - 0x00000001 (1) ImagePath - REG_SZ - c:\windows\system32\cvshost.exe -s ObjectName - REG_SZ - Local System Start - REG_DWORD - 0x00000002 (2) Type - REG_DWORD - 0x00000110 (272) I tried to delete only the ImagePath file and hit F3 and it comes back! Am I supposed to delete all of these files instead?
I'd rather you try this program, regseeker.
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

Download and run. Select Clean the Registry.
Make sure the check mark is in Backup before deletion.
It should only show green and red entries, which should be safe to remove.
Here's a new log file, btw.

Just so you know, I don't use America Online nor CompuServe (never have), and no matter how many times I try to get rid of that line, it STILL shows up too.
Did regseeker cleanup anything?

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, I ran regseeker and it DID clean up a lot of registry entries. I deleted them all.

The computer runs fine (except for all the svchost.exe running in the background…..???). It's running much better than before - that's a definite!

I used Killbox in safe mode to delete those files you instructed. One of them in the site folder was svchost.exe…. But I was able to delete it (as I know that the only file that's needed is the one in the system folder in windows). I can't seem to delete the last two lines in the HJT log….they keep coming back!

Did you try booting in Safe Mode, then HijackThis and removing them?

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.
O23 - Service: Wide Area Network Provider fix (wanfix) - America Online, Inc. - (no file)
O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thanks for all of your help, LDTate! If I can ever repay you for all of your free advice and good-nature and patience, please visit my site at www.rosi-g.com and I will be sure to hook you up with some goodies of your choice!!! :D
