Days of trouble; malware everywhere; please help

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

I have a host of infections including but not limited to trojan.dialer.u, cowabanga, dialer.kotu, etc. Some of them supposedly have been removed but others keep coming back.

I have turned off system restore–as originally instructed by Symantec–and have run all the programs suggested by this board: Spybot, Ad-aware, Microsoft antisypware, Ewido, as well as the online scan by pandasoftware. The online scan by trendmicro remained grayed out and/or frozen on my system and wouldn't run. I have run these programs in both normal and safe mode, as instructed.

I have also run Counterspy as recommended by Dell tech support.

Now Norton antivirus–or Ewido–or one of the other programs I have run–will pop up warning me about some trojan or tmp file, or another. I'll "block" or "delete" it but they keep coming back.

Please help! This is driving me nuts and consuming a lot of time and energy. I'm willing to reformat, if needed, but want to be sure I can do a clean reformat and the virus/trojan won't be hiding in a data file or somewhere not reformated.

My hijack log follows.

Thanks for any help offered.

Bob

Hello Bob :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Do not run Option #2 yet, it will damage your system if your not infected.

Ken :D

Bob,

Lets run option # 2 for smitfraud,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Let me see the report along with a new HJT log please.

Ken :D
Okay. Ran smithfraudfix.com. It got some stuff. Ran in normal and safe mode. The log follows along with the new hijack log.

Norton says I'm still infected with these problems:

FILENAME THREAT NAME
srveqa[1].exe Dialer.Kotu
srvkqk[1].exe Dialer.Kotu
win4b8.tmp.exe Dialer.Kotu
win5CE.tmp.exe Dialer.Koto

Failed to delete win5CE.tmp.exe Dialer.Koto

I really appreciate the help. Hopefully, these problems will all be resolved soon.

Bob

Bob,

Did you run the Smitfraud fix in Safmode, it should have showed those files being deleted, although it looks like its gone.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to My Computer > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it Hijackthis.
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe

Please do not proceed until you move HJT to it's own folder.

* Click on My Computer
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to Tools/ Folder Options/ View
* Choose the radio button to Show Hidden Files and Folders
* Take the checkmark out of Hide Extensions for Known File Types
* Then Apply/ OK

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these and click on Fix Checked

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido

Still in Safemode,
Right click on Start and click on Explore and navigate to the following files and folders and delete them.

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winzzd32.dll

Reboot normally and lets run a system cleaner to get all the cob webs out.

This will by default install the Yahoo Toolbar, you can remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel if you wish.
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

Let me see the Ewido report and a new HJT log please.
Okay. Did everything as instructed. Could not delete c:\windows\system32\winzzd32.dll however. Access was denied. I tried shutting off the offending application using control, alt, delete. I shut down a "system32" program, or some such, but access was still denied to the offending file.

My Norton Internet Security has reported one attempt to breach the firewall since I did all this, one of those win.tmp files.

Any how, the saga continues.

My Ewido and fresh Hijackthis logs follow.

Thanks for the coaching.

Bob

Bob, Yahooooooooooooooo that bugger is gone :thumbup: Great job following all my instructions, your log looks very healthy :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: Any issues, how is your system behaving now?? Ken :D
So far, so good. I'm afraid to believe my computer is "clean!" The only issue that remains–and it's not a biggie–is that whenever I open up my browser, Firefox, two taps open saying "Snapfish:Share:registration:Error" and "Snapfish:Share:Registration." Then when I close the browser, I get an annoying popup that says, "Sure you don't want to see your friend's photos"? I have cleared my cache in Firefox, but nothing seems to help. Maybe this is a Firefox issue and not relevant to "malware" or this board. My emails to Snapfish went unanswered. The behavior doesn't occur in IE, which I rarely use. So . . . if I have to live with this, I can. But if you can get rid of this last vestage of cyber kidnapping, I'd appreciate it. Thanks so much for all your help. I can't believe how powerless all the anti-Spyware programs I tried (ewido, Counterspy, Spybot, etc.) were against my computer's infection. I will definitely be making a contribution to this board to help keep the vital service you are providing available. By the way, would reformating have "solved" my problem, or would the spyware have perhaps been hiding in one of my data backup files? And would a reformat (or reinstall of Mozilla Firefox) solve my remaining problem? Thanks for everything, Bob
Bob,

I am including some free tips and tools for you, take your time and follow them to clean up your system.

Any donation big or small just goes to keep us up and running, we are all volunteers that do this whenever we have a spare minute or two ( or when my boss steps out of the office :P ) Thank you for your gesture.

I got this on the snapfish site when I googled your error message, maybe registering would make it go away. From what I gather , Snapfish is a legit site. If you dont use this site any longer, they may have software to remove in the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel. Look in C:\program files for a snapfish folder and delete it if you dont need it.

Oops—there's invalid or missing info in your registration. Please review the information below and re-enter the fields marked in red.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

* Go to C:\windows\prefetch and delete all the contents in that folder, but not the prefetch folder itself, you should be in Safemode to remove it all.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one
AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents downloads and (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine, this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote, I will leave this thread open for a few days for you in case you have any other questions.

Ken :D
