Thanks again!!
Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
AboutBuster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
http://lineofire.geekstogo.com/cwsserviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

SafeMode. <—MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode

3. skip

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\uzabx.dll/sp.html#28129

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

5. Delete the following files if present:

C:\WINDOWS\mfcsg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uzabx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3jb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\atlcy32.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Skip

8. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

9. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

10. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

11. Reboot into normal mode.

12. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

13. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

14. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did, MrC
MrCharlie,
You are awesome! I'm attaching my latest hijack this log…and it appears i'm clean as can be. I'm truly grateful for the succinct way you speeled everything out. It was most reassuring. I want to make a donation…to you…to the forum…or both. How do i do this??

Finally…any recommendations about how to protect my little network from future assaults. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Well Done!!

Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O16 - DPF: {10003000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - ms-its:mhtml:file://c:\nosuch.mht!http://2awm.com/pop/chm/tt1sp.chm::/on-line.exe

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

We have to use a special little app to get rid of those 015s that are still in your log:

Download this file to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Reboot and post a final log to be checked and then I'll give you some "Preventive Maintenance Tips".

MrC
Hi MrC…Looks like you did it!! I'm a happy camper. My wife has some similar problems…and before i bother you again…i'll attempt to go through the routine you gave me. I think i can get close….and if not, i'll be in touch…if that's OK. Anyway, i did donate to Tom…but i thought i'd be able to make one to you. How about it??

I'm ready for your preventative ideas…and my log follows:

LOOKS GOOD…I THINK. Many Thanks.

avalon4251
Looks Good!

We volunteer our time, but thanks anyway.

My wife has some similar problems…and before i bother you again…i'll attempt to go through the routine you gave me.

Be careful - make sure you have the same infection - you don't want to mess up her computer.

I'll leave you with……..

Some preventive maintenance:

Now that you're clean: <—-Important Step!!!!
Delete your system restore files and create a new restore point:

XP system restore

ME system restore

Visit Windows Update and install all the lastest critical updates.

Install these two free programs, they sit in the backround and protect your system from spy and adware being installed on your system, also from your browser being hijacked. Check for updates weekly.

SpywareBlaster

SpywareGuard

IE-SPYAD
Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
IE-SPYAD

Need a free anti virus?
AVG*free
(check for updates - daily)

How about a firewall? The front door to your computer.
ZoneAlarm*free

Free spyware removal programs:
SpyBot
AD-Aware
CW-Shredder

Free Online Trojan Scan

A SQUARED FREE TROJAN SCANNER

Trojan Hunter
TrojanHunter - free trial

Please consider using FireFox instead of Internet Explorer

Replace Java with SunJava

Pop-up stoppers:
GoogleToolBar
Pop-upStopperFree

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date
anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.

Good luck and thanks for using the forum - MrC
Hi MrC….yup…you were right…my wife has a different "thing" going on…so i'm taking the liberty of sending you the Hijack log file we did…and if you are willing…she'll take it from here. Thanks in advance if you can get to it. Here's the logfile:

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot

Open up Internet Explorer , Tools, General Tab, reset your home page, now Programs Tab, Reset Web Settings
That will change everything back to the default settings.

Post a fresh HJT log, MrC
Hi MrC,

I've done pretty much everything you suggested. Biggest problem was non responsive cleanmgr. It wouldn't get past scanning…so i finally deleted temp & temp internet files manually. So anyway, i'm posting the latest hijack file below. Thank you so much for the help.

Well Done.

Here's a program you can use to clean up all the temp files on the system, System Security Suite. Just check the boxes you want to clean.

Just a few things to clean up.

Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:
