OK, We are new as well. THe following is a copy of our hijackthis log file. We are having MAJOR problems with popups. We have ran spybot & ad-aware which seemed to help. BUT the popups are back.
Thank you,

Hi farmer
Initial analysis indicates you have the Peper Trojan (among other problems) and we'll tackle that first. It is a very stubborn infection which requires two different tools to remove. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

For the second tool:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Then, run the Housecall On-Line Virus Scan from Trend Micro, and clean any problems found.

Then, run the online trojan scan at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and delete any problem it finds.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

If you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Hi farmer

Please read this entire post before proceeding and please download any Programs you will need, at this time, before they are needed.

Please print out these instructions so you can read them while you clean your system. A printout also makes a good check list for Hijack This, to avoid making errors.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Then, please Download LSPFix from:

LSP-Fix

Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer Windows. Run the program and check the "I know what I'm doing" Button and place all listings of inetadpt.dll into the remove section by clicking on the button that points to the right. When all instances of this dll are in the Remove section. Press the finish button.

To see a tutorial on how to use this program click the link below:

Using LSP-Fix to remove LSP Spyware & Hijackers

When you are done please REBOOT.

Close all programs and windows and run Hijack This.
Place a check against the following items:

Hello,
Followed your instructions, however we could not find the 4 folder/files listed below. We did search as well and found only "Remote acid.exe" in this location: C:\Documents and Settings\WINDOWS\Prefetch.
We did NOT delete it. The new log file is posted. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi farmer

It would be okay to delete "Remote acid.exe" from Prefetch.

Looks like Peper is still hanging around.

Download this peper removal tool:

http://zerosrealm.com/downloads/uninst.exe
or
http://www.mjc1.com/files/peperpage/uninst.exe

You must be connected to the internet for this procedure to work correctly.

Doubleclick uninst.exe and allow it to finish. Then REBOOT. Then run it once more to make sure everything is cleaned up. Then REBOOT ONCE MORE to allow it to finish the job.

Please run Hijack This again and place check marks next to the following entry, if it is still there.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.alvbgufxxoieh.com/BSr7HmWU_9G3u…3aotbj_mKW.html

Close all other windows and browsers, then click on "Fix Checked.

Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything, as we need to see the entire log.
Hi farmer
Looks like someone forgot to pay the rent.
Try this link. I think it is a differant program so possibly it will do the job.
http://home01.wxs.nl/~kleyn080/uninst.exe
Please follow all the previous instructions on running it. Do keep an open Internet connection and run the Program twice, with a reboot between and another Reboot after.
Then please post a fresh Hijack This log here and I'll have another look at it.
Ok, followed your instructions and here is the new hijackthis log.
Thanks again.

Hi farmer

Your Hijack This log appears to be clean. How is your PC running ?
Any problems ?

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Hello, Yes the PC is running MUCH better with less pop ups. THANK YOU!!!!!! We have taken your advise and are reading up on what you have posted for us. Thanks again, sure appreciate your help!!
