I've been having persistent difficulties with my computer for a while now, and I'm hoping somebody can help me out.

I use Zonealarm Security Agent as my primary security and firewall. I run Norton Symantec AntiVirus as my AV software, and I run Spybot and Adaware for spyware and adware.

-I run scans using my three security programs daily. Every time I do, I fix the problems that the scanner presents. Usually Adaware will find around ten things to fix. Spyware usually doesn't find anything after I've run Adaware, but I'll fix anything that it does find. My virus scanner doesn't find anything at all.

-Even though I do this, my computer will get progressively slower as the days go by, so three to seven days after I've rebooted, it's as slow as molasses.

-What confuses me is that when I open TaskManager, it tells me that nothing is taking up any processor power at all.

-My computer also asks to increase the size of its virtual memory paging file on a regular basis now, usually once every one or two days.

-Eventually my computer will refuse even to open programs. I'll try to open something simple, like Internet Explorer or Task Manager, and my computer will tell me that it just can't load the program.

-At this point I reboot, and my computer will work for about three to seven days before it locks up again.

-The other piece of information that might be pertinent is that my computer wants to run KasperskyAV at startup (I've never installed the Kaspersky AV program). I unchecked the box in the boot manager to stop it because I'd heard that while Kaspersky is a legitimate antivirus program, the name KasperskyAV can also be a virus.

Here's my HijackThis log file. Somebody please help me out!

Hello T_Hizzle_3, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I wish to apologize as we has just went through some changes including a new server and new software as you can see. This has gotten us behind. If you still wish help I will see what I can do. I need to mention that you are running Selective Startup in MSCONFIG and I need to see everything to make sure nothing is hiding. Please enable all in MSCONFIG before you post the next log.

I've been having persistent difficulties with my computer for a while now, and I'm hoping somebody can help me out.

I can help you remove the malware, then we will see how you are running.

I use Zonealarm Security Agent as my primary security and firewall. I run Norton Symantec AntiVirus as my AV software, and I run Spybot and Adaware for spyware and adware.

All good programs, and I am wondering how it got through your defense and why Symantec is not locating and removing it? Is the message you are receiving from Symantec. This is surely a worm/virus and a bad threat to your computer. Here is some information about it. http://castlecops.com/startuplist-6080.html and http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusin…s.aspx?id=39437 As you can see it is quite nasty.

Someone has also installed another item on your computer that calls itself a screensaver but is actually a nasty installer of foistware: C:\Program Files\Dilberttest3\Screen Saver\FWLink.exe and very well might be the source of the virus? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/FWLink.exe-257.html

I want to try to remove the virus first, here it is in the log and we will be using two online scans. If the first locates and deletes it, there is not need to run the second. Please let me know how this goes. The bad item:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Kaspersky Antivirus] KasperskyAV.exe

Run these two free online scans in this order and let us know if anything is located that can't be removed, the exact name and location of the item also.

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

Once complete, then follow these directions, keeping in mind that some of the files may be gone as a result of the free scans, still complete the intructions as posted. I also wish to say that you have three R1 lines from Dell/MyWay, if you do not use them, you may check and remove them also, and access Dell via search if needed.

Open Task Manager, then the Processes Tab. Look for highlite and end process on any of these items that are there:
Dilberttest3\Screen Saver\FWLink.exe
xhrmy
Kaspersky Antivirus
KasperskyAV.exe

Use the information in the following link to enable hidden files for your Operating System:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Scan with HijackThis and check the box in front of each of these line items if there are there:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these files and folders if there. Do not miss them! You will need to search for this: KasperskyAV.exe and hopefully it will have been removed by the scans. Just make sure. If there is anything left, the search will locate the fodler or file it is in.

KasperskyAV.exe >>> file

C:\Program Files\Dilberttest3\ >>> folder

C:\WINDOWS\Xhrmy.exe >>> file

Clean Like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post a new log along with any feedback you can give me. Make sure Selective Startup is turned off for that log. Use ADD REPLY, stay in this thread.

Thanks…pskelley

pskelley,

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I'll start with some notes I made while implementing your recommendations, and then I'll post my new HJT log at the end.

-The "Panda Software" scan found one piece of adware called "nCase". The online scanner could not remove it, so I went looking for and found a recommended fix on their website. They told me to remove the program "180search assistant" from my computer via "Add/remove prgrams" (under Control Panel), but "180search assistant" didn't show up in the "add/remove programs" window.

-I tried doing a standard windows file search for "nCase", and I came up with 2 ".gif" files in my "temporary internet files" folder and an "nCase.zip" in Spybot's recovery folder. I wasn't sure what to do about this, so I left it alone.

-Since the Panda scan didn't find the KasperskyAV, I went on to your next link (ironically the real KasperskyAV's website), but I was confused as to how you wanted me to use the scanner there. It only allows for scanning one file at a time and only files up to 1 MB at that. I didn't do anything here.

-Only one of the four processes you mentioned was present when I opened Task Manager. I ended the process tree for FWlink.exe. Neither "xhrmy" or either of the two "kaspersky"s was present for me to end.

-I ran HJT again and checked the ten boxes you told me to check.
As a side note, I was wondering why you wanted me to delete/reset my personal homepage. Surely an html file I wrote myself can't be the source of my problem. I did check the box anyway.

-Neither of kaspersky or xhrmy was present for me to delete when I right clicked on "start" and went to "explore". I did do a regular explorer search and remove from my computer everything with "dilberttest3" in it, including a folder, a ".ini" file, and a ".scr" file. It is no longer present under "program files".

-I searched for "kaspersky" and found only the website to which you had linked me (in my internet explorer history), and that website's cookies.

-I opened "msconfig" and reset my startup to "normal startup" and restarted my computer. I ran "msconfig" to check on the "kaspersky" difficulty, and I noticed that it is still present under the "startup" tab in the system configuration utility, even though I implemented all of your recommendations that it was possible for me to implement.

After an adaware scan, I ran HijackThis again.
Here's my new HJT log:

Thanks.
Hello T_Hizzle_3, Welcome back. I will say that we should not allow this much time to go by if possible. Much can happen with these infections in almost a week. I realize the fix is a little complex, we do not know "exactly" how to remove what is on your machine, if we did I would have a nice "Canned fix" and would not have to work hard or ask you to either. I appreciate all of the feedback, but I am not going to respond to each item except to this one:

(ironically the real KasperskyAV's website)

The item was probably named that because this company discovered the worm. I will look at that information and I will respond to any questions in a future post.

Well, right you are, it is still there, and the only major issue of malware left in the log. I supplied you with a couple of links so you can learn a little more about this worm that we MUST remove.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Kaspersky Antivirus]
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-6080.html
(review all info in the following link)
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusin…s.aspx?id=39437

We will do another run through with HijackThis as it is supposed to stop running process when you remove a 04 line in this new version. One way or another we are going to have to find that file and delete it. Make sure your temp and temp int files are all deleted so Search won't find webpages. Make sure you have enabled hidden files. Then Search for the item, we must find it and kill it. Read the information in the CA link as it will give you the information you need. It mutates each time. I will also supply links to a couple more free online scans in case you want to try them:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

I wish to remove Downloaded Program Files (016) which are ActiveX plugins to make sure nothing in them is causing our issue. I will leave the ones I am sure are safe, and IF you see any you are positive are safe, you may pass over them. I am also removing the Dell stuff they put on your computer, you may pass over it if you wish but you can always go to Dell by typing "Dell" into your browsers search line. Those are not needed.

Scan with HijackThis and check these line:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click "Fix Checked:

HJT is supposed to have ended running process on that item, using Windows Explorer (RIGHT click on Start, then click on Explore) locate and delete KasperskyAV.exe. Watch for this item also: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Update Machine = "wuamgrd.exe" Delete it if you find it.
I think this is in the System 32 folder, be careful what you delete.
Hopefully the scans will clean it out, post a new log and we will see where we are. When you are reviewing the information at Computer Associates, make sure you look at the list of items this worm interferes with, You will need to reinstall any of those items you have onboard once you are clean. Especially your AV and Firewall. Good luck.

Here are two small downloads that will help us see what is going on with this item, download and run them and include the log from them with your HijackThis log:
Download Dllcompare from here:

Download Getservices.zip from here:

PSKelley,

-Neither online scan found anything

-I ran HJT and checked the boxes you indicated.

-My windows explorer searches revealed neither "KasperskyAV.exe" or"wuamgrd.exe"

-I ran "msconfig" after I restarted, and "KasperskyAV.exe" does not show up under the "startup" tab.

Here are the three logs you asked for:

Hi T_Hizzle_3, Looks like you got it, the log appears clean now. Since we started the process a new version of HJT was released that shows another new area malware writers are infecting. I would like you to update like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions. I also want to mention again that because of what that worm does to some services, please review that information again and you may need to uninstall and reinstall programs mentioned that it may have infected just to be safe. Since you are clean now I will give you some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRlg and Grinler to help you stay that way:
