Hi,
I contracted a few Trojans, Malware, and a few other nasties. I was able to remove almost all of it using Spybot, Avg, Ad-Aware and VirusTotal website to scan individual files. However, my system still is slow loading and uses too much CPU while doing nothing. I was able to hunt down within the registry some left over bits and pieces but now I recieved an blue screen error message dealing with "wincom32.sys" and needed to reboot. For no apparent reason CPU usage peeks to 100% and causes me to reboot to save mode just to get some relief while on the internet or in other programs. Nothing is being caught by any of the listed programs, even in safe mode but yet my system is still a little screwy while is regular mode. Can someone see if there is something I may have overlooked in the HJT report?
Below is the HJT report:

Hi Hamartiaand welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
dan
Dan, I thought I had Sp1 installed, I know I updated a few years ago since I burned it on to a CD in case I needed it again. Never the less I will install it again and see if it comes up on a systems report. Thanks Hamartia
Thanks for the help, I attempted to install the needed updates but had trouble with the hard drive. I ended up having to install a new one. Just finished reinstalling everthing I need plus all the update's and explorer 7.
Here is my log file and I believe everthing looks good.
Thanks

Your version of HJT is outdated "Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0" should be "Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1"

OK, the first thing I need you to do is as follows

Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the prompts from there.
  • When HJT opens, click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
  • When HJT has finished scanning, a window entitled "hijackthis.log" will open - when you close this window the log will be saved into the hijackthis folder.
  • Copy and paste this into your next reply.

We will be able to do two jobs in one here. because at the moment " HijackThis.exe"is running out of a zip folder which is not good.
Doing the above will do it all for you.
Post me a new HJT log
Thanks dan
Hey dan12, doing ok, just been a little busy lately.
Didn't realize running HJT from the zip made any differance to how it gathered data. I don't see any differance in the report..but what do I know?!
Here is the updated report:
Thanks

Hi Hamartia

Your log is looking ok,but given your problems I would like to run a few scans.

Firstly I'm not seeing a firewall on your sytem.

The main difference between the Windows firewall and the others is that the Windows firewall only blocks incomming traffic. It does not block outgoing traffic from the pc. This, of course, is better than having no firewall at all but, some types of malware install programs that, once on the computer, call out to update themselves, to download other malware, or to send your personal data to someone.
This is when the Windows firewall is not enough. What is needed in that case is a bidirectional firewall – one that will check outgoing traffic as well as incomming. That's the reason for the third party firewall recommendations.
These programs are essential to prevent you from getting reinfected:

* Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check This webpage out. 2 free ones available for personal use:

o Kerio Personal Firewall
o ZoneAlarm

Dan,
I'm a little apprehensive obout running a firewall since I know nothing about them. I do know the benefits of using one, but without the knowledge in configuration I would do more damage than its worth. My weakness is in networking and I don't want to screw my connections up.
Anyway, here are my logs you requested, all looks well I believe:

Hi Hamartia

Your returned logs are fine, well done!

I can understand your reservations regarding the firewall but I wouldn't be giving best advice if I did't present you with good advice and give you the advantages of running a firewall.

Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration, , can lower your risk greatly.
So you would have no worry about setting it up.
At the end of the day this is your computer and my role is to give you best advice.

As you have decided not to install the firewall. You must use the XP Firewall and make sure it is not switched off. It should not cause problems with your network connections. If you should have a problem (highly doubtful) then you should have someone come in and resolve it for you.
On no account can a system be on the Internet without a firewall protecting it. There are bad individuals out there, constantly pinging for such unguarded computers, and without a firewall yours will be found.
Again I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't give you these warnings.

  • Stand Up and Be Counted !
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
Safe surfing
Regards dan
Dan, I fully understand the door is left open and I truelly appreciate your concern. I would play with it if I could find a site that explains the in and outs of Firewalls in layman terms. There are so many options and my needs are simple. I don't game online so all I need is the ability to surf the web with both computers, one hard wired, the other wireless. And also VPN for connecting to the network at work once in a while. I'll tell you what, If you could give me a couple of good reliable site's that will help me learn, I will attempt to set up a firewall. I have downloaded Zone-Alarm as you recomended, I just haven't done anything with it until I learn more. My system is running great! As long as my son keeps out of certian sites (PS2 cheats, Music sites) I should be able to stay that way for a while. CPU is running normally, programs load quickly, no hanging, quick bootups and reboots. I think it helped also installing a new 100MB hard drive since I was almost at my limit with the other two and by removing the partitions. I wasn't going to spend any money on this system but I needed more space and since it was only 40 bucks, what the heck. This now leaves me free to build a new one at my pace. So again, if you have any sites in mind that will help in the Firewall arena please let me and when I feel confident enough, I will surely set it up. And thanks for the great program recommendations, they will be a great addition. Thanks Dan! Ken
Sorry to hear Dan is having trouble, hope a solution is close by. Thanks for the links, they look like a great help in setting and maintaining Firewalls. I will surely give it a shot. Ken
