Ezula And Toptext

Hi. I have what I suspect is a really simple question involving EzuLa.

It all started when I decided to download a “scary” haunted-house-screensaver for my 2-year-old son, who has developed a fascination for ghosts. Against my better judgement I downloaded eZula TopText as well, lulled by the assurance that it could be easily removed afterwards via XP’s control panel.

Not so. Being paranoid, I ran AdAware and discovered 100 new registry keys (“EzuLa Object Found!”), which I removed. I also ran Spybot.

My concern is this: according to the doxdesk.com database, TopText also installs a “stub.exe” file that functions as a downloader/installer and can automatically reinstall TopText (and God knows what else). I’m uncertain as to whether or not I nabbed it. According to Doxdesk, it this file can be manually removed using the command “stub.exe –UnregServer”, but alas I don’t know how to do this.

I’ve rebooted my computer, and here’s the Hijack Logfile:

Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.

I’m uncertain as to whether or not I nabbed it. According to Doxdesk, it this file can be manually removed using the command “stub.exe –UnregServer”, but alas I don’t know how to do this.

stub.exe is an application from DJ Delorie which deals with internal processes relating to this piece of software. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

NOTE: If you find a file named 'stub.exe' in the CuteFTP folder - do not delete it. it sould be in C:\WINDOWS\System32 or C:\WINDOWS
little eagle:

Hi again and thanks once more for the help.

I’ve removed newdotnet as per your instructions. I’ve also run HijackThis and it appears to have disappeared from the log file.

You have noticed probably that I use Zone Alarm as a fire wall. I’ve been getting queries from it all evening long relating to previously unknown programs (to me, anyway) that are trying to access the net.

Here are some of the programs on the Zone Alarm list that I don’t recognize:

~ ef 7194.tmp
~ f39a.36.tmp
eZstub Module (C:\Windows\Lookup\ezStub22.exe)
eZstub Module (C:\Windows\system32\eZstub.exe)
and
EZThemes_m3tsp8.exe

In addition I’ve discovered an eZula subfolder in my Programs folder, which I’ve tossed.

Here’s the latest logfile.

First things first. Thank you very very much for the help. And you’re right: I was trying to take a short cut around this, but I see now that it’s much smarter to do it slowly and throughly.

I’ve used Hijack to fix the items you listed. There was no company name related Xhrmy.exe file, so I fixed it to (I hope).

I followed your instructions regarding revealing hidden files. iLookup contained only the ezStub22.exe, so I removed the iLookup folder as well.

I’ve run CCleaner and rebooted. Here’s the new logfile:

Finally, regarding your last question:

My computer is behaving “normally” at the moment. The startup is fine, programs start without a problem, everything seems to be running smoothly. I don’t notice anything unusual or out of the ordinary with it.
Sorry I missed one
Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.
O18 - Filter: text/html - {DFAA31C8-A356-4313-9D95-5EDAB46C5070} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmf32v.dll

Reboot in SAFE MODE. If you don't know how click here
Delete the following file(s) listed

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmf32v.dll

Mozilla freak, me.

me too read this

I’ve used Hijack to fix the items you listed. There was no company name related Xhrmy.exe file, so I fixed it to (I hope).

I followed your instructions regarding revealing hidden files. iLookup contained only the ezStub22.exe, so I removed the iLookup folder as well.

Did good.

Done. Only problem: after "fixing" the registry key associated with Imf32v.dll, and going into safe mode, I was unable to locate such a file in the Windows\systems32 directory. I also conducted a search of my entire hard drive, which turned up nuthin'.

I read your article, and it was like sooo completely over my head. How serious is this exploit, do ya think?

Anyway, thank you very much again for the help, assuming that we're done. I'll drop some change in the donation box on my way out.

HJT took care of it. Just checking to see if it was Still there.
Hey, little eagle (or anyone else for that matter).

One final question. I've just discovered that Xhrmy.exe is still in my Windows directory, despite the fact that I fixed it with Hijackthis. I looked over my latest Hijack logfile and can't find it there.

Can I simply delete the file now, or is the removal process more complicated?
Glad we could help :D

To help keep you clean follow the recommendations in Tony's article here:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
