Hi there I am trying to fix my sisters computer. She has a IBM Thinkpad R31. And was running no anti virus prog. I installedAVG free and it said that she had 75 infected files such as I-Worm/bagel (manyvarieties) and trojan small.p I cannot start in safe mode or do windows updates. I have tried to run bitdefender, panda active scan, Counter spy (she only has SP1) with no luck. also the help and support as well as search in start does not work. I have included the HJT log. Welcome to Tom Coyote.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Go to your Add -Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove Media Access

Open HJt Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, tick these and click on Fix Checked

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe

Boot into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Delete both these folders in Red

C:\Program Files\Media Access
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools

Reboot normally and run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Post a new HJT log and let me know how things are running now???

Ken :D
ok i did all that you said (except boot into safe mode but i figured that it wouldnt be a problem as i do not have those files you wanted me to delete.) I could only see the first 2 items in the hjt log I must have gotten rid of media access and wintools in my many other scans. I am finally able to run bitdefender and panda. but still cannot boot into safe mode. Or do a windows update???? Thanks again let me know what you think.

Log looks good, but to be on the safeside, run the Panda scan and post the report into this thread.

Panda ActiveScan <<
Ken :D
Try this
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
I did it 4 times, but it did not help. The sfc /scannow worked though so it is not due to a bad disc. Is still doing the same thing. When I go into safemode through msconfig it wants to send an error report. through F8 it just keeps going back to the options page. The only options it will let me select are last known good config and normal. Totally confused now?????? Thanks Mneenee
Yes I have tried both of those methods as i stated before when using msconfig it closes out and asks if I want to send an error report tro microsoft. While trying to do it from start up using F8 key it just keeps going back to the options page and will only let me select normal or last known good configuration. So knowing that it is probably a corrupt file I did a repair with sfc /scannow. After doing it it just does the same thing. Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. Mneenee
Lets bypass Safemode for the moment.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

C:\Program Files\Media Access
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools

Highlight all the files with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure ALL Files is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes

Let me see a new HJT log.
