I am trying to clean up my friends pc and have removed over 580 trojans, dialers and spyware using AVG 7.0, spybot, spydoctor, cw shredder, ad-aware se, spy sweeper and trojan hunter. I turned off system restore and ran these programs while in safe mode. Everything looked ok until connecting to the web and then AVG started saying there were lstbar trojans and could not delete them. I have been through this process of cleaning a few times now and still these trjans keep coming back. I am at a loss as to what to do now. Can you please help. I ran hijack this after the last cleaning and this is the log.

You are using an out of date version of hijackthis. Download the most recent version here.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

Extract it from zip to a permanent folder.

Run another hijackthis scan. Place a check next to the following entries, then close all other windows and click the fix button.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sdkiv.exe] C:\WINDOWS\sdkiv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUTOPROTECTU] navapq32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [DSCRSS] dscrss.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Compliant] frcdix.exe

Then reboot into safe mode and delete these files.
C:\WINDOWS\sdkiv.exe
navapq32.exe
C:\autoprotect.exe
C:\cm.exe
dscrss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\vptyaxdd.exe
frcdix.exe

You may have to enable hidden files to find all the files.

Then reboot and run another hijackthis scan and post your new log here.
I downloaded and ran the latest version of hijackthis and ran "fix" on all the entries you said to check off. I rebooted in safe mode and tried to delete all the files you listed but was unable to locate C:\WINDOWS\sdkiv.exe, dscrss.exe, frcdix.exe. I enabled show hidden files and file extentions but no luck finding them. Here is the latest log from hijackthis. So far things seem ok.

Everything else looks good.

So how did I get infected
Well it looks good-he has been running the pc for a few days with no problems. Thanks so much for your help. I have activated the firewall on XP and installed AVG and set it to auto update so hopefully his pc will stay clean. The only other problem left is the modem has been silenced probably by one of the dialer trojans that hijacked his dial up internet connection. I have checked the usual settings(enable modem speaker and modem volume) and uninstalled -reinstalled modem. I have even tried installing a different modem, and added AT M1 and AT L3 commands to the extra settings for the modem. Alas nothing works and the modem remains silent. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions on how to rectify this? Thanks again for the excellent support in cleaning up the pc, I couldn't have done this one with out you.
