 I have been having problems with my computer being slow. I run Adaware & SpyBot and they always find stuff. I finally formatted my harddrive and reinstalled Windows XP. It's not been two weeks and I'm having problems again. My scanner was just fine after I reinstalled and now it won't work. The problem seemed to start after my daughter was having problems with something that showed up on her desktop called BetOnSports. I went to that website to see if I could get info for her. I didn'e put any info in and left as soon as it ask for it but could I have got something that easy? I have a grandson that gets cheats. Are these websites the cheat websites bad for worms? I don't know how to use HiJack this so I will post my logfile. Hope someone can help and thanks.

Hello again " wilmasue50 "

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s).

Please click here for instructions on how to set up a HijackThis folder.

Then please follow these suggestions:

(1)
Go here and run online scans (both), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx

Then go here http://www.trojanhunter.com/ TrojanHunter Free Trial and download and run the free trial of Trojan Hunter.

And here http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ Online Trojan Scan and run the free online Trojan Scan

If there should be anything found that it couldn’t clean, please WRITE DOWN the FULL PATHS AND FILENAMES.

Note anything that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

(2)
Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot and Ad-aware. All are free and available below.
I know you have these programs, but be sure you have them set up correctly.

Go here for tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tut…43.html#install

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

(3)
Empty Recycle Bin

(4).
Open My Computer and choose Tools, Folder Options; click on the View tab and under Advanced, choose Show Hidden Files and Folders. Also uncheck the options for "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files". OK your way out again.

(5).
Start > Run and type CLEANMGR. Click OK and when presented with a list of options, check the following boxes: Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Recycle Bin and click OK.

(6)
Once done reboot into Normal Mode Rescan and post a new HijackThis log file to confirm what was removed and if it's clean or not. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Marty ;)
Hi Marty
I made it to do everything you said except I couldn't download the second step.
It was www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx. Everytime I tried to download it I received a message that said it was unable to start. It asked me if I had Internet Explorer version 4.1 or higher. My Internet Explorer Version is 6.0.
I went through the rest of the steps and found very little to be taken care of. The Ad+Aware and SpyBot took care of everything that came up. Everything seems to be doing fine except when I'm on the Internet the pictures are really fuzzy, sort of in blocks. I read on the microsoft website the firewall might cause this. I turned off the firewall just a minute and it made no difference so I turned it back on. Here is my new HiJack log.

Hello again " wilmasue50 "

Just a few more things to take care of.

Please look up at the top of the page (on the right)…you will see "My Assistant". Click on that and it will give you your last 10 posts so you don't have to do a 'search.'
If you have a pop-up blocker, you will have to click on the Ctrl key and hold it down in order for the menu to appear.

Please click here for instructions on how to set up a HijackThis folder.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

(1).
TrojanHunter Guard might try to prevent your 'fix', so you have to 'exit' TrojanHunter Guard by double clicking the icon in the tray. A box will appear on the screen. You will have to click on 'file', then when that opens, click 'exit'. Click 'yes' when the next box appears on the screen.)

Open HijackThis scan with it and check each of these items below:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Close all programs but HijackThis and click "FIX CHECKED"

The following are optional (”Considered Resource Hogs”)(Recommend you Fix it)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

(2).
Download and install CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php

Run CCleaner Click tools then click Windows TaskAd and then run uninstaller.
Under windows tab check internet explorer, windows explorer, and system.
then click Run Cleaner.

(3).
Reboot to regular mode. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS.
Please run and repost a new HJT log in your reply to this post.

We will need to check your LOG again…Marty
Marty
I went by the steps you posted and found all that I could find. I checked my system resources and they jump from 78 to 97. Is this normal? I still can't view the graphics clearly in Internet Explorer. Everything seems to be moving a lot faster thowe. Here is my new logfile.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

“Marty
I went by the steps you posted and found all that I could find. I checked my system resources and they jump from 78 to 97. Is this normal? I still can't view the graphics clearly in Internet Explorer. Everything seems to be moving a lot faster thowe. Here is my new logfile.”

“Your HJT LOG Looks Clean” Great Job.

"Now that your clean! Please follow the below suggestions!"
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Marty I appreciate your help so much. I really move faster now. I don't seem to have any problems now. I have one more question. I hope it's OK to ask it here. I have a neighbor who's computer is really messed up. When we finally got Ad-Aware to download and run, it found 900+ applications. I can't get anything else to download because it takes so long. Her virus protection found 12 Trojans. I think this is where some of my problems came from. Would it be better to format her hard drive and reload everything than to take all of the time it would take to try and clean everything out. Thanks again for all your help. Wilma :D
