Helping My Coworker Out...

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Use ALT/CTRL/DEL and end the process if listed for:

sgmain.exe
THGuard.exe
sgbhp.exe
kwiqqu.exe

Search for kwiqqu (without the extention) delete all found.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
Thanks for the continued assistance!

Here's the latest log file from HJT…

I ended processes on everything but kwiqqu was not in the process list. When I searched for it I found a copy of it in the prefetch folder and deleted it, but it is still listed in this latest log. Thinking she might be stuck with it. Of course, if I install sp2 with the popup blocker, she'll probably never see them anyway… :P

As to the PC's behavior, it is running smoothly, but I'm getting a few popups and popunders still from urllogic.com and exitexchange. Not as bad as it was when she gave the laptop to look at.

Go to the prefetch folder and delete all files in that folder. Just the files

Download Registrar Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Put it in its own folder. You may want to keep this program. It is an excellent free, registry editor.

Search for kwiqqu if any are found:

Right click on it, and select delete.
If you get a confirmation question, respond OK then close out the program.
OK… I installed the program, ran it, and deleted two keys. I rebooted and immediately ran a HJT log. It's still there! Arrgggh! :rant2:

EDIT: I also deleted all files in the prefetch folder…

Does it show it's face when you search for it?

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\WINDOWS\System32\kwiqqu.exe <–Delete File

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Well…

I couldn't delete it in safe mode, so I had to go to command prompt. I got it that way. Upon reboot I checked the system32 folder and it's not there, but when I run a new hJT log I see the nhuffg has come back. Maybe the two are in cahoots together?

Maybe the two are in cahoots together

Kinda seems like it :rant2:

Look in here and see what all is in there.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Lets do this also:
Click Start> Run type in Msconfig
Look in Startup. What's listed in there with Check marks?
In the Start Up folder all that's there is Acrobat Assistant, Adobe Gamma Loader, and Desktop.ini In MSConfig: pctspk realplay qttask rundll32 kwiqqu :rant2: apoint thguard acrobat assistant adobe gamma loader nhuffg :rant2: spywareguard atiptaxx ati2mdxx
Gotcha  I think you know what to do. Uncheck those bad boys. Reboot and search for and delete ALL kwiqqu and nhuffg  You might also want to run Reglite again and make sure they're gone.
