:rant2:
I used a certain credit card only once in the past 12 month and that was by adding it to a second card on PayPal. Right after that it was hijacked.
Is it my computer or did someone hack into PayPal?

Hi beavertail

Instructions:

Should you need instructions for:
Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.
Reboot in safe mode. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key.
How to print the fix instructions
Click the underlined links above.

When asked to post a new HijackThis log please
Close all windows and browsers.
Find the HijackThis folder. Open it and double click "HijackThis.exe". Click "Do a system scan" and save a "logfile". (If Hijack this shows you a "Scan" button instead of "Do a system scan" that is OK. Just click it.)
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Click it. Click "Ctrl-A" (the "Ctrl" key and the "A" key at the same time) to highlight the whole log. Now click "Ctrl-C" to copy the text. Open this topic and click the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the page. Paste the log into the window that opens up by clicking "Ctrl-V". Click "Add Reply" to post.

How to unzip a downloaded zip file.
Place the zip file in the folder where you want the unzipped program to be.
If you are running Windows XP you simply right click the zip file and select "Extract Files".
For the other versions of Windows you will need a program like 7-Zip . Open 7-Zip. Navigate to to the downloaded zipfile and highlight it. Right click and select "Extract Here"

Preliminaries:

1. Please copy the instructions to a notepad or preferably print them.

2. Make sure to work through the fixes exactly as given and in the exact order they are mentioned below.

3. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Start the cleanup:

Your computer is infected but at first sight not badly.

However because of your descriptin of what happened I would like you to run the following scans.

4. Please download the latest version of Ad-Aware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy . Then follow the instructions in the links below to run the programs.
Spybot Tutorial
Ad-Aware Tutorial
Reboot after each Scan is finished to let the programs finish deleting what they found.

5. Now I would like you to do a virus scan at Panda free virus scan
Click "Scan your PC". In the Window that opens follow the instructions. Let Panda fix anything it finds.
If you get report of files that can't be cleaned / deleted please write down the filenames and
locations and post that in your reply.

6. Also run Trend Micro Houscall Again clean out what it finds and please let me know if there is anything that it reported as not cleaned.

7. Download “a Squared” . It has a free version. (The download button is at the bottom of the page). Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

8. Download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans. Select all your hard drives. Select full scan. When the scan is finished please save the log and copy it into your next post.

I know that this will be time consuming but it is better to be as safe as posible.

9. * Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply". This will make it possible to decide how to continue.
Panda search 'no viruses have been found'
a squared search 'no malware found'
spybot search ' congratulations, no spyware found'
Ad-aware search deep scanning 'no objects found'
Trojan hunter: unfortunately I tried it several months ago for a month and
they won't allow a new download to be activated: 'your evaluation period
has expired'.
Trend Micro Housecall: they require in their install that my Norton Internet
Security be uninstalled which I don't want to do.

OK beavertail, you do not seem to have anything that can not be seen in the HijackThis log.

Let's get rid of what there is.

1. You have one (or more) of these programs running on your machine and that is good.
Winpatrol
Spywareguard
Spybot s&d (Teatimer option)

But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis they need to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Right click the running icon of spybot's teatimer, and choose exit.
Right click the running icon of winpatrol, and choose exit.
Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program, Menu, file, exit, and confirm the programs close.

Unless they are turned off they could interfer with the fix by hijackthis.

2. Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". (If HijackThis shows a "Scan" button instead of "Do a System Scan Only" that is OK. In that case click "Scan".) When the scan is finished put a check mark by the items that are listed in bold below. If you can not find an item, that is OK. Just continue but inform me with your next post. Do not click fix until instructed to do so:

The following items are OPTIONAL and can be fixed by putting a check mark by each line. By fixing it you can shorten boot-up time and free up resources. You will not harm your program by doing this and you will still be able to start it manually via the start-button. It is your choice, so you must decide whether you want to get rid of it or not.

This is optional but is unneeded at startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
This is the item to check mark in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

These are ActiveX files that will reload if and when they are needed.

CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS and BROWSERS that are running, except HijackThis and then click the "fix" button.

3. Configure Windows to show all files.

4. Reboot in safe mode.

5. Delete the following folder if it exists.
C:\Program Files\MyQuickSearch

6. Reboot in normal mode and

7. Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Generate StartupList log". Check mark both boxes. Notepad will open with a log in it. Please add this log to your next post.

8 * Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply" so that we can check that your log is clean.

You should use the Add/Remove programs in the controll panel to remove TrojanHunter. Chances are that you then could download it again and run it.
I'm confused. Your instructions are: to make a checkmark next to the items I no longer find followed by: 'Do not click fix until you are instructed to do so'. But after your 'clicking' instructions you say: 'CLOSE ALL PROGRMA and BROWSERS that are running, except Hijack This and then click the "fix" button. When do I really click the 'fix' button'?

I did not follow that last final 'fix' nstruction and just addded the latest log file as per your instructions. Can you see my 'clicks'?

Elrond, I am not posting to fix anything in beavertail"s log but I do want to pass this along to him.

beavertail, I noticed this because I have also been a victim of CC fraud twice in my recent life. Please print this out and take it to heart. These intructions are very important to your financial health not your computer health:

Protecting Yourself from ID Thief

Password Protection
• Never share your passwords or PINs with anyone.
• Never write your passwords down where they could be
easily found by others.
• When creating passwords, don't use information that
could be easily linked to you (like your birth date,
phone number, or the names of pets or hobbies).
• Change your password often.
• If you decide to revoke any access to an aggregation
service that you have shared your password with, we
recommend changing your password.
Online Banking
• Never leave your computer unattended while using any
online banking or investing service.
• Always logoff completely when you are finished with
your secure session.
• If you are providing financial information, be sure
the site is secure. Look for the "closed padlock" in
the lower right hand corner of your browser.
• Do business with financial institutions that you
know and trust.
• Watch out for copycat sites that may try to look
like a financial institution. Be sure you are using
the correct Web address for your bank.
• If you're considering an "online bank" verify the
bank is legitimate and that deposits are insured by
the FDIC.
• Only access your personal financial information from
a computer you "trust". Internet kiosks and cyber
cafe's may not be as secure as your personal computer.
Shopping Online
• When placing orders online, check for the "closed
padlock"  that is usually located in the lower
left-hand corner of your browser. This means that your
information will be encrypted.
• Consider registering your credit card* or Visa check
card* with "Verified by Visa" — a new online service
created to prevent online credit card fraud. When your
card is registered, and the online merchant you are
using participates in the program, a PIN you designate
is required to complete the transaction process.
• Shop with online merchants that you know and trust.
Browsing the Internet
• Before entering any personal or financial
information on any Web site, we strongly suggest you
review the security and privacy policies listed on
that site.
• Keep your browser updated. Newer versions have the
latest safety features. It's also important to know
which browsers are recommended by the sites you are
viewing.

Email
• Email is not generally considered secure.
• Never enter personal financial information such as
account numbers or your SSN in an email.
• Use secure messaging when it's available. Most
online banking applications (including those on the
SunTrust Web sites) have a secure messaging feature,
such as an online form.
• Be wary of opening suspicious emails or their
attachments — especially from someone you don't know.
Viruses can be passed along, even without the sender's
knowledge.
• Beware of email scams. If an email describes a virus
that is circulating, be sure to verify it with the Web
site of one of the virus software manufacturers.

Protecting Your Children
• Know what your children are doing online.
• Be open with your children about things that concern
you about the Internet (chatting with strangers,
pornography, etc.) and let them know what they should
do if they encounter these things.
• Consider using an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
that provides controls to block sites that are not
appropriate for children.
• Install software that allows you to set up barriers
to control access to sites and prevent the entry of
private information.

What is identity theft?
Identity theft occurs when someone steals your
personal information and poses as you. They may open
credit card accounts, apply for loans, rent apartments
and establish cell phone service — all in your name.
In many instances, they request address changes for
you, so you never see the bills for their activity.
These impersonators spend as much money as possible —
in a very short time. Most people never know this is
happening until they apply for a loan or receive a
call from a collection agency.
Clearing up the effects of identity theft can be a
nightmare, and it takes time. You can spend months or
even years re-establishing your creditworthiness.
How is personal financial information stolen?
• Over the phone — by someone posing as your employer,
bank or other service provider to confirm or update
your information
• From your mailbox — stealing items in your mailbox
(incoming and outgoing) such as credit card offers,
account statements & bill payments
• Your garbage can — discarded bank statements, credit
card offers, cancelled checks
• Internet sites — entering personal information on a
site that is not secure
• Where you shop — a clerk may copy personal
information written on a check
• Post Office — someone may initiate a change of
address on your behalf
How can I help prevent identity theft?
• Regularly review your credit reports. The credit
bureaus offer services, such as Equifax Credit Watch,
http://tinyurl.com/5qb47  that can help you monitor
any inquiries against your credit file.
• Don't give out financial information on the phone
unless you initiated the call. This means your Social
Security number, credit card or checking account
numbers. Your bank will never call you and ask you to
provide that information.
• Store all personal and financial information in a
safe place, especially if you have outside workers in
your home.
• Report any lost or stolen checks immediately. Ask
your bank to stop payment on any missing checks.
• Review your new checks when delivered to make sure
none are missing.
• Store new checks and cancelled checks in a safe
place. Be sure to tear up or shred any checks that you
are discarding.
• Don't share any of your passwords or PINs. Be sure
you enter them discreetly so no one can see. Also,
properly store or dispose of your ATM receipts.
• Tear up any financial solicitations or documents
before throwing away. We recommend using a shredder
when possible.
• Outgoing mail should be placed in a secure mailbox,
instead of being left in your own mailbox.
• Pick up your mail promptly. If you're going to be on
vacation, ask someone you trust to collect your mail
for you while you are away, or ask the Post Office to
hold your mail until you return. You can get an
Authorization to Hold Mail form at your local post
office, or you can access it online on the US Postal
Service's Web site — www.usps.com/forms.* Or, call the
U.S. Postal Service at [removed] to request a
vacation hold.
• Keep an eye on your monthly bills. If they don't
arrive as expected, contact the company to
investigate. Look for any suspicious charges and
report them immediately.
What do I do if I'm a victim?

If you find you have become a victim of identity
theft, you should take action by communicating with
the credit bureaus and any companies that may be
involved.
Many financial institutions and companies that conduct
business on the Internet have become the target of
fraudulent email and Web site scams. These scams are
known as “phishes,” (pronounced “fishes”) and they
attempt to illegally obtain clients' personal and
account information.
Credit and charge card fraud costs cardholders and
banks hundreds of millions of dollars every year. The
theft of your credit cards is a common way to commit
fraud, but someone can use your account number
fraudulently while your card sits safely in your
wallet.

The following tips will help you reduce the chances
that you will become a victim of credit card fraud:
• Sign your cards immediately once they arrive in the
mail.
• Memorize your PIN and don't write it on anything,
especially something in your wallet.
• Don't enter your card online unless you're on a
secure site. Don't send your credit card number in an
email.
• Keep a record of all your account numbers,
expiration dates, and contact information for each
issuer. This will come in handy if your wallet is lost
or stolen.
• Report a lost or stolen card right away. Quick
action will minimize potential loss and liability.
• Save your receipts to compare against your billing
statement. When discarding receipts, tear them up or
shred them.
• Monitor your statements monthly, making sure you
recognize all charges. If you see any suspicious
transactions, contact your bank immediately.
• Carefully review receipts for voided transactions
and be sure they do not post to your account.
• Destroy your carbons. Do not leave them behind
without tearing them up.
• Don't leave your purse, wallet, cards or receipts
unattended. Always keep them secure or in your sight.
• Only carry cards that you need, leaving others in a
safe place at home.
• Don't give out your account number unless you know
and trust the company.
Here are some precautions to consider when using an
ATM:
• Be sure ATM and parking lot are well lit when using
at night. Avoid going alone.
• Don't use an ATM if you notice any suspicious
activity. It is important to be aware of your
surroundings at all times. Find another ATM, or come
back at a safer time. Report any suspicious activity
to the police.
• Don't count your money at the ATM. Wait until you
are in your car or, even better, are safely at home.
• When using Drive-up ATMs, keep your doors locked,
other windows rolled up and the car running.
• Prepare yourself by filling out all deposit slips
ahead of time.
• Report your lost or stolen card immediately.

• When traveling, here are some security precautions
to consider:
• Carry limited cash. Use traveler's checks or
withdraw money with your ATM card as you need it. Keep
your traveler's check receipts in a safe place that is
separate from your traveler's checks.
• Keep a spare credit card in a safe place. Only carry
the cards that you'll need. If your wallet gets stolen
or lost, you'll have another credit card you can use.
• Know where you're going. It's a good idea to find
out where the less safe parts of town are so you can
avoid them, especially at night.
• Make a photocopy of your passport. Keeping a
photocopy of your passport will help if yours is lost
or stolen. In the event of loss or theft of your
passport, visit the closest US embassy or consulate.
• Don't let your mail accumulate while you're away. If
you're going to be on vacation, ask someone you trust
to collect your mail for you while you are away, or
ask the Post Office to hold your mail until you
return. You can get an Authorization to Hold Mail form
at your local post office, or you can access it online
on the US Postal Service's Web site —
www.usps.com/forms.* Or, call the U.S. Postal Service
at [removed] to request a vacation hold.
If you're a victim of fraud, here are some important
actions you should take:
• File a report with your police department. Make sure
to keep a copy for your files.
• Contact the fraud departments of all three credit
bureaus and let them know you are a victim of identity
theft. They can place a "fraud alert" on your file.
This informs any credit grantors that they should be
especially careful when authenticating anyone who is
applying for credit in your name. You should also
request copies of your credit report from each bureau.
This request must be in writing and they should be
free if you mention you have experienced fraud. For
further information, contact each bureau at the
numbers listed below.

o Equifax: [removed]
o Experian: [removed]
o Trans Union: [removed]
• Contact all lending institutions that issued a
fraudulent account in your name. Close all the
accounts immediately.
• Report the incident to the Identity Theft Hotline at

federal government and is a central point for
reporting identity theft. You can also report the
incident via their Web site at
www.consumer.gov/idtheft* or by mail at:

• Contact your nearest postal inspection service if
you believe your mail has been stolen. Check

closest office near you.
• Close all your accounts that have had a fraudulent
address change. When re-opening accounts, ask that a
special password be required when making any changes
to your account.

I will bow back out now. southernlady
Sorry about the missunderstanding beavertail.

1. I hope you did the first step in my last post.
If so Winpatrol should not be running. However please check that this is really so.

This is where the missunderstanding starts.

Check mark these items please.

Hi again beavertail.
Well done. As far as your HijakThis log can show your computer is free of malware.

You have one more line to fix in HijackThis but it is pure house keepeng.

Close down all programs, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Click on Fix and exit HijackThis.

Now that your computer is free of malware, I want you to take some precautions to avoid being re-infected.

Settings and maintenance

1. Clean out temporary files.
Download System Security Suite . Place the zip file into a folder of its own. Extract it to this folder.

Run System Security Suite by clicking the 3S icon in program manager.
Under "items to clear" check mark all. Then click "clear selected items"
This will cause your system to reboot.

It is a good idea to do this once a month or so to get rid of all the junk that accumulates.

2. Clean Out System Restore.
Malware could get backed up in System Restore.
For Win XP follow these instructions to delete all restore points.
1. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel".
2. Make sure the Control Panel is in "Classic View". If it is not, click "Switch to Classic View" towards the top-left of the screen.
3. Double-click "System" and go to the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" and click "OK" and then "Yes".

After restarting your computer you should turn it back on by following the above procedure and uncheck "Turn off System Restore".

You can find out more about this subject at How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore

3. You reconfigured Windows to show hidden files and you should reset this to its original state useing the instructions from here except that
1. Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading put a mark for "Do not show hidden files and folders".
2. Uncheck "Display content of system folders"
3. Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

4. Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions that apply to all "Windows" except "Windows XP with SP2". In SP2 many of those setting are the default settings but check your settings anyhow. The settings can become restrictive but you should use them anyhow. If there are sites that will not show up right with those settings and that you rely on to be free of malware place them in the trusted zone.

1. Click "Start". Open "Control Panel".
2. Select the "Internet Options"
3. Select "Security" Tab and select the following settings.

* ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Download signed ActiveX controls: Disable
• Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
• Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Disable
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Disable

* Downloads
• Font Download: Disable

* Microsoft VM
• Java permissions: Disable Java

* Miscellaneous
• Allow META REFRESH: Disable
• Display mixed content: Disable
• Drag and drop or copy and paste files: Disable
• Installation of desktop items: Disable
• Launching programs and files in an IFRAME: Disable
• Navigate sub-frames across different domains: Disable
• Software channel permissions: High Safety
• Userdata persistence: Disable

* Scripting
• Active scripting: Disable
• Allow paste operations via script: Disable
• Scripting of Java applets: Disable

* User Authentication
• Logon: Prompt for username and password

4. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
5. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

These are a must to protect yourself from malware.
1. Get a good anti-virus if you don't have one. A lot of people like AVG .
If you have an old copy do not use it. AVG Free 7 has been released and version 6 will not be supported and updated anymore.
KEEP IT UPDATED

2. Get a good firewall if you don't have one.
Many like ZoneAlarm. You can download a free copy here

Be restrictive with access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not make the block permanent.

3. MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to keep “Windows” and "Internet Explorer” updated. Open ‘Internet Explorer” and go to”Start”> "Tools" > "Windows Update" or go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof you must keep it updated as well. Go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. Update MS Office here.

4. Download and install “SpywareBlaster”
Run it. Click "Updates" at the left and click "Check for Updates". After updating click "Protection" at the left and towards the bottom click "Enable All Protection". You should now be protected from all known bad ActiveX. You should occasionally check for updates.

5. Download and install "SpywareGuard"

Further tools

I highly recommend downloading and installing the newest versions of “AdAware SE Personal” and “Spybot Search and Destroy”
After installing remember to update the definition files for each program.
I also suggest that you visit this website and follow the instructions on how to configure both programs for best detection. These instructions are the best even though they refer to a cleanup of an infected computer.

There are many other programs that will add extra layers of protection to your computer as well.
I recommend “IE-Spyad” By default, it is unzipped to "C:\ie-spyad". Find out how to install it by going to the "ReadMe.txt". You should occasionally get updates by using the bat file or by uninstalling and deleting the old files and returning to the site to get the new version.

A Trojan scanner would be also be helpful. You can download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans.

The ”a Squared” trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans. Nice to add to your armor if you wish.
Download free from “a Squared” (The download button is at the bottom of the page). Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

It is worth while to take a look at "So how did I get infected in the first place? for some good advice.

A good source of information about computer secutiy can be found at this website . ChrisRLG is an Administrator and Classroom Teacher at Tom Coyote.

If you want to update Windows XP with SP2, you should know that there has been a small group of users who have had problems with it. The risks are the least if your computer is clean of malware and you are running an updated software firewall such as ZoneAlarm. You can download SP2 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can let Windows Update do it. However if you have a dialup connection I would advise you to order the CD as the download is huge and will take a VERY long time to download. There has also been some reports that there is less problems when SP2 is installed from a CD.
You can get the CD here .

Update all protective programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Also follow the recomendations that southernlady posted.

If your computer behaves oddly please post another reply and describe the symptomes.

Best of luck and clean computing
