Nasty Pop Ups/flash Lockup

6 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

I have been receiving nasty porn style popup ups at random when browsing the internet. They don't seem to fit any specific pattern. I have run adaware and spybot but that does not seem to fix the problem. Also, certain flash objects on web pages cause my computer to lock up tight and I must shut it off and reboot to get it working again. I have downloaded and installed the latest audio and video drivers but this does not help.

Any suggestions for a fix would be greatly appreciated

imdls5882, Hello and welcome to the Tom Coyote Forums. I will be reviewing your HJT log, I will post some preliminary recommendations as soon as possible. Thanks rstones12
imdls5882,

I have outlined some preliminary steps that we need to address. You may want to print out these intructions for reference. This process will take a few steps so please be patient and follow the provided directions.

I see that you are using Norton Anti-Virus.
I suggest doing an online scan just as a secondary check.

[1.]
Please run this online scan, allow it to delete anything it finds:
You may have to select auto-fix prior to scanning, it should be a selection on the screen.Panda ActiveScan
Please make a note of anything that wasn't or couldn't be fixed.

[2.]
You may have run these programs already, make sure they are up to date and run per provided instructions.
Current Versions are:
Spybot S&D Ver: 1.3 Download Here
Ad-Aware SE Build 1.05 Download Here

Download and install both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE.

Instructions:

Spybot S&D:
Go to your Start Menu >> Programs >> Spybot S&D >> then choose Spybot S&D.

*Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
*Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
*Close Spybot then launch it again
*Click the button "Check for Problems"
*When Spybot is done scanning, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries, "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
*Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
*Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware SE FULL SCAN:
Go to your Start Menu >> Programs >> Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE >> then choose Ad-Aware SE Personal.

When the main window opens look in the bottom right corner and click on Check For Updates Now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window:
*Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform Full System Scan.
*Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
*To scan just click the Next button.

When the scan has finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.
(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)
The program will ask if you want to fix/delete selected items, choose yes/fix.

[3.]
Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

[4.]
Update your current Virus Scan Definitions:

[5.]
Reboot into Safe Mode and Scan with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE

Scan your drive(s) with your updated Virus Scan

Empty Your Recycle Bin.

[6.]
Reboot your machine and post a new HJT log, by clicking "Add Reply"

Thanks,
rstones12
rstones12

Thanks you for your quick response.

I have performed all of the items on the list you sent me. Found some trojans and a boatload of other spy nasties. There didn't appear to be anything that couldn't be removed. Here is latest HJT log.

imdls5882
imdls5882,

Hello,
We have a few items to clean up.

Start and scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items.

O2 - BHO: BHO - {00000015-A527-34E7-25C2-03A4E313B2E9} - c:\WINDOWS\system32\winsrvs_1.dll

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200312…meInstaller.exe

The next two are questionable, did you put this in your trusted zone?
musicmatch.com
If not go ahead and place a checkmark next to these items.

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)

Close all browsers and open windows.

Click "Fixed Checked"

Reboot and post a new HJT log by using "Add Reply"

Thanks,
rstones12
rstones12

Thanks again for a prompt reply. I cleaned up the 4 items you mentioned in your previous post. As far as the musicmatch enties in the "trusted zone", I use musicmatch, but have no idea how to put any thing in a "trusted zone" so I deleted them. Figured I could always reload musicmatch again later if I bollixed something up!

Here's the latest HJT log after clean up.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet. Please go to
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
