Hi, My pc is running very slow and some prgrams do not respond at all. I am running windows XP and have AdAware and norton Anitvirus. Adaware picked up a Sahaagent and a few other files. I have deleted these in safe mode but it has made no difference. Would be grateful if someone could let me know how I post a Hijack log and look at the result for me. Thanks regards, Richard
Hi Richard, Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums. I will be working on your problem and will post back soon with some recommendations. Dave
Hi Dave,

Thanks for replying to my plea for help. My PC was running very slow (slightly better now). I have now cleared the virus that I had and have created a HiJack This log. Prior to running the log I performed two scans. One using AVG from grisoft and one using MS Spyware. I have removed AdAware and Spyblaster.
The biggest problem I have now is that Internet Explorer does not link to other pages, i.e when looking at vehicle details on a website and clicking to go for the picture I just get a blank screen. I have tried resetting the defaults in Internet Options but it has made no difference.
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. I have thought of formatting the C drive but that seems a bit drastic and a last resort.

Thanks,

Richard

Hello Richard,

Let's get a fresh start here. Please do the following:

Please download and run Spybot and AdAware SE. Then follow the instructions in the link below to setup and run them Spybot and Adaware Tutorial.
Reboot after running each tool.

Next, your version of HijackThis is out of date. Please download the newest version,
HijackThis v1.99.0.
Be sure to replace your old HijackThis.exe with this new one by saving over it or deleting your old one before downloading the current version.

Please repost a new updated log using your new HJT version.

Regards,

Dave
Hi Dave,

Ok have intalled Spybot and Adaware Se, could not get the tutorial link to work so just read through the instruction for each one.
This is the order that I did them in:

1. Downlaoded and ran Adaware, this found 21 registry keys identified,62 registry values identified, 61 files identified, 1 folder and 74 negligible objects, during the scan I had a warning of a "Trojan Horse.Dropper.Small.5.J
2. Reboot.
3 Downloaded and ran Spybot, this found 1 entry for "Altnet", 1 entry for "Common Hijacker" and 5 entries for DSO Exploit
4. Reboot
5. Downlaoded and ran HJT V1.99.0

Hope this was the correct method that you asked for. I was surpised the scans found so much as I thought things were getting slightly better, but obviously they are not.
Below is the updated version of HJT log, heres hoping you can help. Thanks

regards,

Richard

Hi Richard, Not sure why the link for the tutorial didn't work for you. I just checked it and all seems fine. But anyway, as long as you updated both Adaware and Spybot before running them we should be good. Give me a little time to go through your HJT log to see what I can find. In the meantime. Your copy of HijackThis needs to be put into a permanent folder. HJT and the backups it makes can be accidently deleted when your temporary folders are cleaned. The location you had your old version was fine. So you could put it there if you like. Just make sure you delete your old version. If you could move it before I advise the fix that would be great. Regards, Dave
Hello Richard,

I noticed that you appear to be running two antivirus programs, AVG and Norton.
It is recommended that you only run one at any time to avoid conflicts. If you like
you can keep both installed but only have one active, and the other as a backup
if needed.

First, we need to stop this process from running so it won't block HJT from fixing it.
Please open Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del and END TASK on the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe

Now you can run HiJackThis. Check the boxes next to these items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [snpstd] C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

This next item is for realplayer and is optional to remove:
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Now close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Now boot the computer into safe mode:
*Restart the computer.
*As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*Press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following file if present:

C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe > file

Reboot and post a new HJT log for review.
Hi Dave,

Apologies for not replying sooner. did not realise you had answered me as there was no mail in Outlook.

I have completed the instructions given but could not find
C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe . file in safe mode.

The internet explorer links still do not work. To get to this page I have to cut and paste the address from the link in the mail in outlook express.

Below is the latest HiJack This log. Thanks

Hi Richard,

Your log is clean but I would like to ask to just double check and make sure that file is not hiding somewhere. Boot into safe mode again and make sure you can see hidden files and folders:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Then search for the file C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe

If you cannot find it then that is OK too.

Reboot and post a new HJT log for review.

Also, how is your computer running now?

Try this MS help and support page for links not working when you click on them:
Microsoft Help and Support

Regards,

Dave
Hi Dave,

All instruction completed, even found file:
c:\windows\vsnpstd.exe and deleted it in safe mode.

The computer still seems to be running a bit sluggish although I would say there is some improvement.

The links still do not work, to get here I had to cut and paste again. That is the problem I have on MS support to, getting to the main page is no problem, but can't seem to link from there.

Below is an updated Hijack This log. Thanks

Congratulations, your system is clean. Here are a few tips to prevent malware from
infesting your computer in the future and some suggestions on resolving your sluggish performance.

It still appears that you are running two antivirus programs, AVG and Norton.
It is recommended that you only run one at any time to avoid conflicts. If you like
you can keep both installed but only have one active, and the other as a backup
if needed. I know I mentioned this earlier but I just wanted to make sure you disable
one of them. This could affect system performance.

If you don't already have these these programs I would recommend that you get them:
Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard.
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.
Here are tutorials on installing and setting them up:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=49
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html

Here is a link to an article written by Tony Klein, that also gives some great advice on preventing further infection.

This could help speed up performance:
I recommend cleaning out your temporary internet files. CCleaner is a
freeware system optimisation tool for PCs. It removes unnecessary junk
from your computer allowing it to run more efficiently and securely.
Please download CCleaner from one of the two websites below:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Install CCleaner. Now open and click on the Windows tab.
Check the following items:
Under Internet Explorer:
Temporary Internet Files
History
Recently Typed URLs
Delete Index.dat files
Under System:
Empty Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Memory Dumps
Chkdsk File Fragments
Old Prefetch Data

Next: click the Options button and then click the Settings tab
Uncheck: Only delete files older than 48 hrs. and click OK

Prior to running click on the Check for updates now… link
Then click the Run Cleaner button. It should only take a few seconds
to complete and exit when it is done.

If you're still having performance problems I would recommend you visit
pcpitstop and run your computer through their battery of tests.

You can also check out this startup database and search to see what processes you have running that may not be needed to improve performance.

Safe Surfing! :)
Hi Dave, Would just like to say Thank You very much for the time you have spent resolving the problems with my pc and for the advice you have given. I will certainly follow the advice in the hope of preventing future problems. Thanks again. Regards, Richard
