Hello,

My son has helped with what he knows for fighting this malware problem, and I am looking for the final little bit of cleanup.

Also, with Windows 98, I cannot run MS AntiSpyware, so is there something else you can suggest to run in background for preventative measures?

My son and I did:

1) Downloaded, Installed and Updated Ad-AwareSE, SpybotSD, HJT.
2) Reboot to Safe Mode.
3) Ran Ad-AwareSE (found and fixed about 600 things - mostly Comet related)
4) Ran SpybotSD (found about 7 more things).
5) Reboot to normal mode, ran HJT to make log.
6) Cleaned up known problems with HJT, based on previous posts.
7) Reboot and reran HJT logfile which is posted below.

Hello ScudMaster and welcome to TomCoyote.

Your log is nearly clean. :)

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

The following activeX controls will reinstall when(and if) you revisit that website, UNLESS you know they are from a safe source, check to remove.

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

Also, with Windows 98, I cannot run MS AntiSpyware, so is there something else you can suggest to run in background for preventative measures?

Once I can verify that the new log is clean, I'll give you some recommendations for very good free programs to help block or prevent many infections.
Hello alsocom,

And thanks for helping me with my system problems.

ScudMaster
Your new log is clean.:) How is it running?
Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place"

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
OK alsocom, I have got a clean computer now and have installed Spyware Blaster, SpywareGuard, Zone Alarm and am now using Firefox as my browser. The computer is running good. My son had previously set up AdAware SE and Spybot S&D. I didn't install ie-spyad or Google Toolbar, as I will no longer be using Internet Explorer. I thank you for all your help and support, and you have been pretty efficient in addressing my problems. I really appreciate all your help a lot.
