As soon as I hit enter when using the search engine of my choice (e.g. Yahoo or Google) a pop up titled 'Search Results - Microsoft Internet Explorer' immediately appears. It's driving me crazy. How do I get rid of this search pop up? I've also started seeing a few other pop ups at random. Below is my logfile. Any guidance/assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jaime.

Hello Jaime, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. Just like your doctor, I have to tell you that you have some nasty infections, some are trojans and some are Downloaded Program files (ActiveX)
Because of these trojans, I would normally use free online scans. I will attempt this with HJT, but you must follow directions carefully. One we are done, I will still want Ad-aware, Spybot and at least one trojan scan run. I wish also to suggest you read the links under the trojan programs so you will know how you are getting infected. Make sure your antivirus and firewall software is kept updated and run those McAfee scans often.
These are your trojans, they are in running processes which we must stop or windows won't let us delete them.
C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe
Backdoor.Agent.bg trojan
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-4775.html
C:\WINDOWS\aqadcup.exe
Backdoor.Agent.bg worm
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-4778.html

Open your Task Manager then choose the Processes Tab. Locate and end process on these items:
jawa32
aqadcup
Jawa322
(end process on any other odd looking item)

Enable hidden files, locate the instructions for your system here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=62

Scan with HijackThis and check the box in front of each line item:

SpyBlast Install Control
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore, in the tree that opens, locate and delete these files:
There should only be one of each file, but if you see more, delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\aqadcup.exe >>> file

While you are there, in the Windows folder, locate this folder "TEMP"
Open the folder and delete the contents..NOT THE FOLDER, just the contents. If there is a lot, click on Edit at the top then Select all, then delete. You may not be able to delete everything and that will be OK.

Now run Cleanmgr: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer.

Use the three links below to make sure you have the most up to date versions of Ad-aware and Spybot, make sure they are updated and run, then remove anything that is bad. If you receive DSO Exploit notifications from Spybot, your may ignore them:
Spybot:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Ad-aware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html
http://www.cjwdavis.co.uk/s-a.html

Run this free online trojan scan, please note anything the scans can't remove, name and locations of the items and post it wirh your next log:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Use these two links to keep in this same thread, I am notified when you post to this thread only:
When replying to your topic, please use the

button NOT the
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/style_images/1/t_new.gif
button.
Take what time you need and be sure to follow directions carefully.

Thanks for the easy to follow instructions. I ran trojan scan at the end of the exercise and it said 'memory not infected.' Here's my latest logfile…

Looking good, great job getting rid of those baddies. There are a couple of items hanging on. They are not "bad", but not good either. Use HijackThis as before to remove these two:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
(Don't forget TeaTimer)

If they will not go, then use instructions for entering Safe Mode for your operating system:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…torial=61#winxo
and use HJT to remove them there.

Here is some information that may come in handy:
SP2 CD
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…us/default.mspx
What you should know
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

You did an awful good job removing those trojans, are you sure you are not after my job? To be sure, free training opportunites are available if you would like to learn more about your computer or even helping others. Just let us know.
Please post a last log for a final check and then I will have some great information to help you stay clean.

Thanks…pskelley

You deserve all the credit! Who knew the skill I learned in kindergarden (following directions) would allow me to fix my computer? Thank you!

You mentioned don't forget Tea Timer. I've got it running in the background. Was there something else I should do with it? Also, are you recommending I install XPSP2? I would like to learn more about the training you mentioned.

Here's the most current log.

Your log looks clean of malware Jamie. I do wish to point out that there is a lot of stuff running at Startup that is using resources you might not want to waste. Certain programs must run, and programs you use everyday are no problem, it is the ones you rarely use. You can turn them off in msconfig and if you need them use Start, All Programs to access them. I will give you links I use to show which programs these are. My rule is if I am not sure, leave it alone, here are those links:

Here is info about msconfig: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

You mentioned don't forget Tea Timer. I've got it running in the background. Was there something else I should do with it?

If TeaTimer is configured correctly it will block you from making changes, or at least you should have to authorize them as you make them. Stops the baddies from getting in.

Also, are you recommending I install XPSP2?

Microsoft is suggesting that you do so. I will have to defer to your decision. Most folks have no issues, but there are a some. The reason for the two links is evident, the second will help you prepare your computer for the download, which is very security based. Most issues I hear of are when the software is downloaded with no concern or knowledge for this information. Good luck on your decision.

I would like to learn more about the training you mentioned

.

The links below will take you to the door, with SpywareInfo you will need to pre-register (free) to see BootCamp instructions. TomCoyote is a little harder to get into as a application must be filled out and approval issued. I would try for TC, if you are qualified they will allow you to join. Nothing at all against BootCamp as I also am a member there and most of us help at multiple sites.

You did not metion anything about how the computer is running, I will leave this link open for two days in the event you have additional questions.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online.
I personally run antivirus software, a firewall (including a hardware router) Ad-aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IE-Spyad. (all free programs except McAfee)

Thanks…pskelley

Ok, Tea Timer is running correctly. My computer is smoking fast again with that annoying pop up search engine kicked to the curb. :D Thanks for all the helpful links. What are your thoughts on ZoneAlarm as a firewall of choice? I've got a Dlink router but the firewall setup is not very user friendly.
Oops  I forgot to supply you with the links, forgive me and here they are:

Take the time to review these links, there may be some duplications, but the information makes it well worth the time.

What are your thoughts on ZoneAlarm as a firewall of choice?

I run Zone Alarm free on all of my computers. I also use a Linksys Cable/DSL router which gives me both a software and a hardware firewall. Once in a while, like if I am using MSNIM to talk to my daughter in the UK I will have to bypass one or both of the firewalls for the duration of the phone call. ZA requires a little effort to view the tutorials and configure it properly, but once set it is like the cooker online..lol, set it and forget it. You only hear from it if it is time to update/upgrade.
