Would appreciate some help from someone!

I am running Windows XP SP2 fully updated.

I have run Spyware se v1.05 fully updated and spybot search and destroy and also spyblaster similarly updated to no avail in helping remove popups etc, incl a particularly annoying toolbar "Searchnow" - "make money" "music" etc. It (or something) also keeps changing my home page whih I have now had to lock. The application data folder in XP has certain exe files within sub- folders named "Mail Tray load list" and "memohelpbyte4" and "driveremote2" which included "software cake"; "barbbib"; "namedent" to name a few! I do not know what these are, but I suspect they are not good.

Internet explorer keeps crashing as well!

I attach my "hijack this" file - having run the various spyware removal tools described above, it reads as follows:

Hello Steve.

MessengerPlus - third party MSN Messenger extension that adds a number of useful features. It also bundles the hard to remove C2Media LOP adware. The software does offer you a choice during setup - make sure to install MessengerPlus WITHOUT that "sponsor program"!

This is the cause for some of your problems. It is optional but I strongly recommend that you go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Messenger Plus 3.

Scan with HijackThis and check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ntoiyefocnndzfq.net/mmMZ/MSmO4y…pIQ2A4H3Nw8.cgi

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {58E41A33-4FC0-2231-D097-B3758726D434} - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\APPLIC~1\CREATI~1\MOVEDEFAULT.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BYTE 4 ROAM PART] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\memohelpbyte4\team default.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cashmeta] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\APPLIC~1\DRIVER~1\ADMINDASH.exe

You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This one is optional but is not required at startup for the program to run.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup) and delete the following folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\memohelpbyte4\
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\DRIVER~1\ <<< Folder name starts with DRIVER

You may need to enable show all files to find them.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Alan,

thank you for your help. My apologies for not replying earlier but I was away on business.

I believe I have followed your instructions and I post the revised Hijack this log as a result:

Any further advice welcomed, but thanks again, your help is very much appreciated. I will have to watch more carefully what my kids download and install when I am not around. Personally I would like to lock them out using the XP admin rights, but they need admin rights to play games - seems crazy to me.

Steve
Hello Steve.

Your new log is clean. :) How is it running?

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks many bad things from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites.

Update these regularly.
