Hello,

First I want to thank in advance for any help.

I have a cable modem, hardware firewall switch router Dlink DI-614+, and norton internet security 2005.

I run panda scan, spybot, and adaware about once a month and keep my computer fairly clean. At least I thought so… I downloaded HJT and looked at my log. Some stuff looked suspicious. In particular I don't know what http://xpehbam/a/load.exe is. I tried looking it up the web addr on the net and norton went crazy telling me that I was attacking other computers and I had viruses/trojans that it couldn't remove. It gave me a message saying that I had a problem with Bloodhound.Exploit.6. From Norton "Bloodhound.Exploit.6 is a heuristic detection for exploits of a Microsoft Internet Explorer vulnerability." I also started getting messages like this in my firewall log "Attempted Intrusion "HTTP_ActivePerl_Overflow" from your machine against [removed] was detected and blocked." Also, in the midst of that chaos something shut down norton internet security, and it wasn't me.

I also think that "WebRebates" is a problem. I have been hijacked 2 or 3 times in the past and always cleaned it up myself, but I'm not a windows guru. Webrebates was in one of the hijacks.

I don't know what http://download.websearch.com/Dnl/T_50188/QDow_AS2.cab is.
I don't know what (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4047/ftp…23/cpbrkpie.cab is.

That's everything that looks suspicious to me at first glance. You guys surely know better than I.

Can someone to tell me what I have here that I need to clean up.

Once again, thanks for any help. It is appreciated.

Sam

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reboot into safe mode (tap F8 during bootup) and delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\win.exe <<< file only
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\ <<< whole folder

You may need to enable show all files to find them.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Thanks for replying to my log. I followed your instructions, and things are looking much cleaner. There are a a few things left that I think are issues. I will try to summarize them clearly.

Issue 1: Old Nvidia Display Drivers
I now have an ATI video card. I previously had an nvidia video card. In my start -> control panel -> add/remove programs there is still a line for ASUS Display Drivers. If I try to remove, then it says that it is not installed. ASUS was the maker of the nvidia card. When I boot my puter I get two pop up windows titled DLL. One says "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll. The specified module could not be found." NvMcTray.dll is Nvidia media center. The other DLL window says "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll. The specified module could not be found." NvCpl is Nvidia display properties. In msconfig.exe on the Startup tab there are startup items for NvMcTray, NvCpl, and nwiz. nwiz is NVIDIA nView Wizard. It would be nice if all this was cleaned up. Is this something that hijack this can help with? These issues w/Nvidia all existed before any changes you asked for w/my log.

Issue 2: Mysterious Blank Startup Program
In my msconfig.exe startup tab I used to have about 5 things which had blank Startup Item, blank command, and HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run as their location. After running the hijack this fixes there is only one of these left. I am assuming that this is not good. I periodically look at my msconfig.exe Startup just to see if there is anything funny looking in it, but I am too chicken to change anything. What seems disturbing about my log is that the lines that start with 04 - HKLM all match up to what my msconfig.exe startup tab says exactly and in the same order except in one spot. msconfig.exe shows the blank entry between NeroCheck.exe and WCESCOMM.EXE. Doesn't this seem like a hijack this bug?

Issue 3: ftp.coupons.com?
This entry in my log seems bad. I don't think I need any special coupon ftp software. Is this entry something I can get rid of?
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4047/ftp…23/cpbrkpie.cab

Issue 4: Gratitude
Hijack this has a paypal donate button. Is this a good place to send my gratitude?

Sam

It appears that the uninstall of the Nvidia drivers didn't go smoothly. Fix is below.

I'll need to check with an expert on this one.

Issue 3: ftp.coupons.com?
This entry in my log seems bad. I don't think I need any special coupon ftp software. Is this entry something I can get rid of?

That line is actually not a bad entry.
All of the 016 lines are activex entries and can be safely removed. They will reinstall when (or if) they are needed again.

Issue 4: Gratitude
Hijack this has a paypal donate button. Is this a good place to send my gratitude?

Yes, this will help support the developer of HijackThis.

Scan with Hijackthis and check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [anvshell] anvshell.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

Optional ActiveX items that will reload if needed.

With all other windows and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reboot than scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
How's the fix going, any problems?

Answer to question 2. With a quote from shelf life and the link provided by nellie2.

poorly written software, bad uninstalls can leave blanks in msconfig, i would have the poster uncheck the item in msconfig, if its all blank.

Here is a good link explaining this in more detail.

Post a new log when ready.
Everything seems fine now. I think getting rid of the Nvidia stuff made my puter boot a little faster too. Thanks!

Sam

Log is clean.:D

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks many bad things from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place"

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Glad we could help.
