Having Trouble With Lop

I've been having trouble and I need help. I'm not computer literate and have received a referral to this site for assistance. I've got icons on my desktop and sites listed in "My Favorites" in IE that I cannot delete or do anything to. My logfile is as follows:

Hello jeffbaxter , welcome to the TC.

If you have a Lop.com infection. To remove it follow the instructions below.

For Windows 2000/XP users
Click Start Select Control Panel
double click Add/Remove Programs
look for any of the following, and uninstall them:
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer
IMPORTANT!!!

You may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names.
They are Lop.com, uninstall them.

If it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, or if the uninstall does not
seem to work go here:
http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
download and run this uninstaller.


Use Add / Remove Programs and remove these:

WildTangent
MessengerPlus3

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

I ran the lop.com uninstall as you suggested. Before I delete those two programs (Wild Tangent and Messenger Plus 3)–these are programs that are used periodically. Are they the cause of the problem? Do I need to not use them? Or should I just uninstall them, empty recycle bin, then restart and later, if desired, reload Wild Tangen and Messenger Plus 3? I appreciate your help. As I said, I'm not computer literate, but you've written so I can understand!!

Keep WildTangent. Remove Messenger Plus 3.

When you re-install, DO NOT install the sponser program. That's where all the garbage comes from :thumbup:

I'd strongly suggest not re-installing messenger plus / sponsor program, because of the conflicts between it, and a variety of security programs, which can result in your computer becoming dangerously unstable



Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

I got rid of Messenger Plus 3. Boy was it mad at me–when it went to uninstall it gave me a note that said it couldn't properly uninstall everything because some other program (i.e., lop uninstall) had deleted some files. It told me it would try to repair what it could in order to properly uninstall. I evidently repaired what it had to then uninstalled. There were no items in the recycle bin–it did do a diskclean before I rebooted.

The icons are off the desktop and the links are out of "My Favorites" in IE :D

Do you have any other suggestions just for maintenance, etc??

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.



Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Log looks good :D :thumbup: How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Fantastic! Everything seems to be running fine–no issues at this time. I followed the instructions all the way through to restoring defaults. Hopefully, we'll be good to go from here.
