What seems to have happened is this: my daughter in downloading msn plus inadvertently downloaded software that includes toolbars and icons. I attempted to get rid of them with Spybot and Ad-aware. but these didn't work. Uninstalling msn plus doesn't work either. Here's my log. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello again"Attridge"
Your HJT LOG is CLEAN, GREAT JOB

(1.)
A Trojan scan would be helpful at this time, please download a trial version of Trojan Hunter from TROJANHUNTER TRIAL and run it to remove any traces of Trojans

(2.)
A2 squared is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like spybot/ad-aware but handles trojans. Nice to add to your armor if you wish.
Download and install A2 squared free Trojan scanner
Run and activate your free version with A squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

(3.)
I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" for information on how to secure your PC from spyware/adware/malware.There are several small free programs mentioned there that help with securing your PC against this type of problem.

(4.)
An up-to-date Antivirus program running with this weeks virus definitions, is vital when using the internet. An excellent free one called AVG is available at:
AVG Free AntiVirus

(5.)
A Firewall is an essential part of PC security and you do not appear to have one running on your system. There are a few available for free that have excellent reputations:
Zone ALarm Free Firewall
Kerio Free Firewall

Let us KNOW How your MACHINE acting NOW?

Glad we were able to help……MARTY :D
What happened is this: the toolbars (top and bottom of the browser screen) came back, so I did another scan. I found that two of the lines I had fixed had come back again (02 - BHO (no name) and 04 - HKLM). I fixed them again, and the browsers have disappeared.

So the question is, how do I stop them from returning? I have Windows XP installed with SP2, which claims to have a firewall.

Hello again Attridge,

“So the question is, how do I stop them from returning? I have Windows XP installed with SP2, which claims to have a firewall.”

(1).
A Firewall is an essential part of PC security and you do not appear to have one running on your system. There are a few available for free that have excellent reputations:
Zone ALarm Free Firewall
Kerio Free Firewall

(2).
Please follow all of my instructions in the all clean directions in previous post.

Marty ;)
Thank you very much for your help, I'll download one of those firewalls and hope it is more effective than the one Windows XP claims to have. Attridge
