Whenever I run Spybot, it always picks up something called DSO Exploit. I've had Spybot fix the problem but it only just appears again. I also have a folder in my Program Files called "xerox". In this folder there is another folder called "nwwia". The whole thing is completely empty. The thing is, I've never been able to delete it. I get an error message that says "nwwia" can not be deleted because it is being used by another person or program. Is that possibly caused by spyware?

Here is a copy of my HijackThis Log:

Hello Emmie, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. I will see if I can help you. First I must say that your HijackThis.exe is very old. The newest version is 1.99. Before you post a new log, update to the new version:
To update HJT, open the program, then click on Config to the right. Then on the top line, choose Misc Tools.
On the left column choose "Check for update online". Follow the instructions.
If you have any problems, use the links below. Make sure the old HJT.exe is deleted. If you direct the new one to that folder it should replace the old one with the new one.
http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

The information in the following link will explain about the DSO Exploits:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/36.html

Scan with HijackThis and put a check in front of each of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *new-search.net*;*x-google.net*
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

(This last is HP, but page is no longer valid)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run Cleanmgr: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then OK. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Please view the two links below to make sure you stay in this same thread, then post a new log with version 1.99 and include any feedback you think we should have. Once I see the new log I will have a better idea of your issues.

I've done everything you've said and I'm posting my new HijackThis Log. Also, someone said that the DSO Exploit that Spybot picks up is something that happens on every computer. I was just wondering if this was true.

Hello Emmie, Good job so far with the removal process and updating your log. You said this in your first log:

Whenever I run Spybot, it always picks up something called DSO Exploit. I've had Spybot fix the problem but it only just appears again
and I replied this:

My reply was this:

The information in the following link will explain about the DSO Exploits:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/36.html

There is one issue, one very nasty item which is an ADULT CONTENT DIALER is still in your log and it was on the list to be removed. I do not know IF you removed it and it came back or if you missed it. This is what it looks like in your log:

O16 - DPF: {14A3221B-1678-1982-A355-7263B1281987} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\foo.mht!http://82.179.166.145/x15.chm::/trs15.exe
Adult Content Dialer

Please look at your HJT.exe that is on your Desktop. It must be in a folder so it can store backups for safety and logfiles you create. If it is not, right click on a blank spot and make a NEW FOLDER. Call it HJT, then open the New Folder and drag the HJT.exe into that folder.

You have these items in your log which I suggest you remove. If you will click on the links and read the information, you will understand why. You can remove this in Add Remove programs, these are optional and up to you.
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-4102.html
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=13470

This is a great program, but unless you use it all of the time, it wastes your resources by starting everytime your start your computer. You can stop that and if you want to use it, start it via Start, All Programs. Here is infomation:
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-926.html
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

All that is left to do is get rid of that nasty AdultContentDialer. If it does not remove this time, then I will give you instructions for removing it in the "Safe Mode", but first, do this:
Before you scan, do a Search for this item: trs15.exe ,if you find it, delete it. It is a little executable attached to that line and might be putting it back when we remove it, then proceed with HJT.

Scan with HJT and make sure you put the check in front of this item:

O16 - DPF: {14A3221B-1678-1982-A355-7263B1281987} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\foo.mht!http://82.179.166.145/x15.chm::/trs15.exe
Adult Content Dialer

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked" Then empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Make a new HJT log and see it is gone. If it is gone, then send me that log and I will do a last check and give you some great information to help you stay safe online.
If it is still there then you will need to follow the directions for your operating system to enter the "Safe Mode".
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…torial=61#winxo

Once you are there, then follow the directions to remove the items line with HJT again. Let me know how it went with the next log. We should be done then.
Thanks…pskelley

The AdultContentDialer seems to be removed. When I removed trs15.exe though, Norton told me it found a virus called Bloodhound and that access to the file was denied. I'm going to run a full scan.

Hello Emmie, Pat yourself on the back, you have a clean log. I would like to know what Norton had to say when you ran the full system scan. It is possible that something is in System Restore. We will purge it now to be sure. If something is hiding there it can't get back on your system unless you have to restore, but neither can Norton touch it. This process will clean the System Restore and create a new one when finished. Here are those instructions. This is important.

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are links to some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to keep you clean and safe online.
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/compsafetyonline.html
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

I suggest, as you will see in those links, updated antivirus software, a good fire wall along with Ad-aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IE-Spyad at the very least.
Please remember that these programs can only do the job if they are kept updated on a regular basis.
I will leave this link open for a couple of days in the event you wish to post again.

Thanks…pskelley
