Sorry it took me so long to respond–busy coupla days.

Trendmicro & etrust both found nothing but Panda found & fixed 2 infected files. Here's the new logfile.
Thanks

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Hi LDTate, Sorry for the long silence, and thank again for your previous help. After I got your last reply I downloaded Spywareblaster but didn't get to the other two right away. My computer seemed a little better at first but overall I don't see a great improvement. I was away for four days (computer turned OFF) and returned to a big problem with my email and a generally cranky, slow computer. Thinking that I was at fault for not having installed the other programs you mentioned, last night I ran CWShredder, Panda, & Trend MIcro. Tried etrust but got some message about "updating vet.da1; failed to create file." Also ran Spybot & Adaware. Updated everything before running. Adaware deleted a few files but nothing else found anything. Also downloaded Spyware Guard and IESpy finally. I've concluded that the email is a separate issue tho I haven't solved it yet. Emails aren't marked as read on the server so they never get removed–they just download over and over again (hundreds of them). I found something on Microsoft's website about this being a problem with Outlook 2003, which I am running. Installed the hotfix & am trying to get my server to remove all messages to see if I can clear it. In the meantime, though, I am once again having trouble with attachments in email taking forever to attach (well, 2-3 minutes). I've been browsing the web today trying to fix my problems; it's slow as hell–every page takes a minute or so to load. I also get redirected to my own email when I don't want to be. On the other hand, opening programs doesn't seem particularly slow, & working in Word is OK except when email is downloading (which is basically all the time lately). So my question is this…do you think these are separate problems or could they be linked to a hijack/spyware/adware issue? Is there anything more you can help me with or should I say thank you and goodbye and leave you alone finally? BTW, I finally also made a donation to this site, as I'd promised. (And fully intended to do even before I started having problems again…) Whatever the answer, thanks again for all the time you spent on my problems. I do appreciate it. Sarah
So here we go again…

Let's see if you have a hidden hijacker.

Click HERE to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
There was nothing in the lower pane. Nada. Zip. I did fix my email problem, by the way. O^E says: "There were no files found :)" ________________________________________________ 1,229 items found: 1,229 files, 0 directories. Total of file sizes: 247,963,969 bytes 236.48 M Administrator Account = True Now what? Sarah
These arn't bad, just resource hogs.

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

If you don't use messenger, fix this also.

See if this helps.
Hi LDTate, I did as you suggested, then waited a few days before replying so I could really see if there was a difference. I don't think there is. It still takes minutes to add an attachment to an email, and everything still comes to a complete standstill while email downloads. (I can't even scroll down the page in a word document until it's done.) This can't be right, can it? Switching between open files–say, an Excel file and a Word document still seems awfully slow (the page will "build" itself one section at a time rather than just appearing at once). And it does weird stuff like shut down Outlook for no reason–it just closes out of the blue. Or I'll be working on a Word file and all of a sudden I'm staring at the hourglass while it switches me to Outlook (which I generally leave open while I work) even though I have no desire to read email at that particular moment. : ) The first few times things like that happened I assumed I'd hit some weird button or combination of keys, but at this point I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Maybe it's just time to take a hammer to this one and lobby my boss for new computer? (not necessarily in that order). Anyway, thanks for your help on all of this. You've been terrific. S
Lets see what all is loading at startup. Maybe we can trim it down.

Click Start> Run> type in msconfig tap enter key. Open Startup. List everything that has a Check by it.
OK, I'm game. When I started looking around on the web for help with my computer I did something with MSCONFIG & I think eliminated some of the start up stuff (unless it came back). Here's what's still there: CePMTray Pinger Point 32 SNDMon ccApp iTouch igfxtray hkcmd Apoint realsched GoogleDesktop Ctfmon msmgs America Online 7.0 Tray Icon HotSync Manager WinZip QuickPick Backup Solutions Taskbar Icon Spyware Guard
Lets try un-checking these: You can always re-check them.

pinger

Pinger is the resident program for Toshiba Upgrades. Periodically checks to see if there are any software/driver upgrades for your particular computer model. If it finds any, it posts a notification

igfxtray

Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets (ie, i810). These chipsets are often included on motherboards. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

realsched

Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Runs independently of RealOne Player, to remind AutoUpdate and Message Center to perform their tasks at pre-scheduled intervals

WinZip QuickPick

Added with WinZip version 8.1. "The new WinZip Quick Pick taskbar tray icon gives you instant access to WinZip and your Zip files. Just left click the icon to open WinZip, or right click it to instantly reopen recently used Zip files, access your Favorite Zip Folders, open WinZip Help, or start WinZip itself.". You can right-click and close it - choosing to not re-load it at start-up

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, done:

It seems a little better. Over the past week or so I think every single attachment I added to an email took 2 minutes or longer; today I had a few that attached immediately, but there were also some that took a long time. And I also had trouble opening Outlook at one point after rebooting (this happens a lot–it gets half-way through and freezes). Switching between files/programs HAS seemed faster, but there have also been times when I'm sitting here watching the hour glass and listening to that little clicking noise (the hard drive in action) and I have no idea what it's doing or why it's taking so long. Maybe I should work with it for a couple of days & see if there's a measurable improvement. It may seem weird that I can't tell immediately but I've been working with a buggy machine for so long I'm no longer sure what's normal and what's not. Sarah
