Hello,
I'm delighted to have found this web site and hope you can help me. My computer has been running slow for months now, and it's getting worse. I have degragmented the hard drive (most recently, last night), run Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy (this morning), and Spysubtract (last night). I updated each of these before running them.

I suspect that I still have a problem with mywebsearch. I tried to delete it using "add or remove programs" in the control panel. At first I got a "runtime error" message. Somewhere along the line I stopped getting that, but the file still shows up in the "add or remove programs" list, although there are no MBs listed for it. Search assistant and Spin4dough also show up there, but again, with no MBs. When I click "change/remove," for any of these, I get a blank box with a location (i.e., res//C:\PROGR~1\MYWEBS~1SrchAstt\1.bin\mwrssracs.dll) at the top, but nothing else. If I go to the program files folder to delete them that way, the websearch files aren't there. I assume the fact that mywebsearch is still showing up in the list of programs when I click on "change/remove programs" means that there are some pieces of it left behind, and that this could be part of my problem. For the record, I do seem to have gotten rid of the mywebsearch toolbar, nor do I see anything that looks like mywebsearch in the list of processes in task manager or in the list of start up programs when I run MSconfig. Also, I ran CWshredder yesterday but it says my machine is clean.

I will be EXTREMELY grateful for any suggestions and would be more than happy to make a donation. :) I work for a magazine, and the time I spend waiting around for my computer to work or searching web sites for info is seriously affecting my ability to meet deadlines…and that ain't good.

Hi Following the suggestions for newbies, I am replying to my own post as no one else has and several days (more than 48 hours) have passed. (Too bad I can't also give myself an intelligent response….) I am trying hard to be patient as I know everyone has better things to do than solve my computer problems, especially during the holidays. If this re-post is inappropriate and I simply need to wait a bit longer, please forgive. Patiently yours, Sarah
Hello sarahv , welcome to the TC.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate, I ran CW shredder; it says my machine is clean. TrendMicro also found nothing, altho I got messages saying drives S, V, and Z were not ready. When I try to download eTrust I get a message saying "control failed to load. Running 4.0 or above?" I'm running Windows XP. When I try to download Panda, it quits after about 5 seconds. I get a message saying the problem might be that my machine is refusing the Active X controls and to consult the FAQ, but can't find anything in the FAQ that tells me how to get around that. I tried temporarily disabling Norton Security but to no avail. Now what? Should I continue with Spybot S&D and Ad Aware or is there some way to get eTrust & Panda to work? Many thanks again. Sarah
OK, I ran Spybot S&D, which found & fixed 26 problems and Ad-Aware, which deleted 6 red files. As for how my computer behaves NOW (after running the scans), it's still slow–pretty much the same as before. When it's downloading email, everything more or less comes to a dead halt, as if it can't handle another task at the same time (it didn't used to be that way). Switching between, say, and excel file window and a word file window (when both programs are already open)–still takes 40-50 seconds or so. Opening an email is sometimes instantaneous, sometimes 30-45 seconds. Attaching a file in Outlook–even a simple word file–usually takes a long time–up to two minutes–but is occasionally instantaneous (as it used to be all the time). And yes, I just tried a few of these things to see if there was any improvement since running the scans, but I don't see any. I've also had a lot of problems with Outlook over the past several months–sometimes it takes forever to open, sometimes it opens immediately, and sometimes (often) it freezes so that I have to use task manager to shut it and try again. (There have been many days when I've spent 45 minutes just trying to get to my email.) This may not even be related, but I also receive many of my emails repeatedly–including legitimate messages that I know are only being sent once. Most days I'll just get half the emails two or three times, but there was one day when I got everything ten times or more (and since everything else virtually stops while the email downloads and I get a fair amount of spam anyway, you can just imagine my frustration THAT day).

By the way, I just went into "add or remove programs" and my web search and spin4cash are still listed there, albeit still with no MBs.

Also, on the advice of a friend, I ran Steven Gould's windows cleanup yesterday. It deleted a bunch of temp files I hadn't been able to get rid of before and I thought I was running a little faster afterwards, but any improvement was minor at best.

I hope all of this is helpful and not useless info (complaints) to wade through.

Again, many thanks for your time and efforts on my behalf.

Sarah

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread along with a new HijackThis log

.
Hi LD
I did as you asked. CompareDll found nothing:
* DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127)
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

and on we go…should I throw up my hands in despair yet?
many thanks yet again.

Sarah
P.S. I thought of another annoying thing my computer does sometimes–but not all the time (because it just did it). A little window pops up asking for my email password. Some days it does it every five minutes, some days not at all.
I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Did as you asked…here's the new logfile:

Do you know what this program is?
C:\Program Files\BackUp Solutions\OLlaunch.exe

Try the online Virus scans now.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.
Hi I assume the program is something to do with my online backup (backupsolutions.com), which is supposed to run every night. I'll do the virus scans & lyk if there's anything that can't be fixed. Sarah
