I have recently uninstalled MSN Messenger Plus3 from my computer, because it was continuosly giving access to all kinds of advertisementes, spyware, trojans and so on to my computer. Most of these are gone now that I've used many virus scannning and spyware detecting programs, but a search bar keeps appearing at the bottom of the screen whenever I open Internet Explorer, and it remains there when I close the navigator.
I´ve downloaded and executed your HijackThis 1.99, following the instructions listed on this page. This is the result. I hope you can tell my what I should do now. Thanks to all.

Greetings Yllain

Preliminaries:

1. Please copy the instructions to Notepad or preferably print them. How to Print the Fix Instructions

2. Make sure to work through the fixes exactly as given and in the exact order they are mentioned below.

3. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

4. DO NOT have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below execept that you need to have these instructions open while starting the download of programs.

5. When asked to post a new HijackThis log please
Close all windows and browsers.
Find the HijackThis folder. Open it and double click "HijackThis.exe". Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Click it.
When the scan is finished click "Ctrl-A" (the "Ctrl" key and the "A" key at the same time) to highlite the whole log. Now click "Ctrl-C" to copy the text. Open this topic and click the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the page. Paste the log into the window that opens up by clicking "Ctrl-V". Click "Add Reply" to post.

6. Configure your computer to show hidden files. If you don't know how to do it the instructions can be found here

Start the cleanup:

7. Please download the latest version of Ad-Aware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy . Then follow the instructions in the links below to run the programs.
Spybot Tutorial
Ad-Aware Tutorial
Reboot after each Scan is finished to let the programs finish deleting what they found.

8. Now I would like you to do a virus scan at Panda free virus scan
Click "Scan your PC". In the Window that opens follow the instructions. Let Panda fix anything it finds.
If you get report of files that can't be cleaned / deleted please write down the filenames and
locations and post that in your reply.

9.Reboot Windows into Safe Mode. Restart the computer. When the BIOS has finished loading (before Windows starts loading) start rapidly tapping the "F8".
This can be tricky. If Windows starts up in normal mode, repeat the process. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key.

10. Next, Open HiJackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". When the scan is finished put a check mark by the items that are listed in bold below. If you can not find an item, that is OK. Just continue but inform me with your next post. Do not click fix until I tell you to do so:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-es8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.voghpwevhojze.com/uOGfiwgBLvLpR…QIXsr7/7Q1y.jpg
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-es8.hpwis.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

If you recognize either of those prgrams DO NOT FIX the line of that program.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {90ACB779-9485-05C7-257D-B8F57D7D9219} - C:\DOCUME~1\PROPIE~1\DATOSD~1\TITLER~1\flap film.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Open help rect proc] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Datos de programa\SoftwareRdrOpenHelp\oncemanager.exe

Optional but recomended fixes:

This is optional but is unneeded at startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Archivos de programa\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

This item you don't need unless you are running multiple display monitors on a single PC. It is a DLL to enable multiple display monitors on a single computer. It can be a cause of numerous problems on some computers. More Information
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NVIEW] rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook

You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK. You probably will have to translate this into the Spanish equivalente comands.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Archivos de programa\Archivos comunes\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

11. Now close ALL PROGRAMS and BROWSERS that are running, except HijackThis and then click the "fix" button.

12. Please do a search:
"Run "Start">"Search">"All Files and Folders"> enter ALCXMNTR.EXE in "All or part of file name". Select "More advanced options". Check-mark "Search System Folders", "Search hidden files and folders", and "Search subfolders". Click "Search".

13. When the search is finished delete all copies of the file found by right clicking on the file and selecting delete.

14. If you fixed the two lines that I questioned above then delete the following File(s)/Folder(s) in BOLD while still in Safe Mode.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Datos de programa\SoftwareRdrOpenHelp <=== This folder

15. Reboot in normal mode and

* Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'
Hi again,

I've followed your instructions and removed some items from my computer using HJT (I also deleted a couple of cookies I found with SpyBot). Despite that, some icons offering "website hosting", "casinos" or "travel" keep appearing on my desktop (this started a few days after my first post), and I've noticed that similar files have appeareed in the place of the ones I deleted. An example of this is this file:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://web.luusqcnskazsghnowsuncbfl.com/uO…QIXsr7/7Q1y.htm
It can be found in the log of my most recent scan with HJT, copied below. I don't know whether this is expected or not, but I found it strange and thought it might be important. Well, I hope you can help me on this one. See you.

Hi Yllain.

Happy 2005 New Year.

Sorry for the delay with the answer but had to do some research.

Let's see if this can be done the simple way. The infection that does not want to go away came from MSN Messenger Plus3. Sometimes the infection will go away when it is uninstalled. Therefore please

1. Reinstall MSN Messenger Plus3 with Sponsors here .
Install it with sponsors.

2. Go to Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –>Add/Remove Programs

3. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

4. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

5. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

6. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

7. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila!

* Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply"
Hi,

This seems to have worked! I installed again Messenger Plus! (this time with the sponsors) and uninstalled it later. My home page in Internet Explorer is back and the bars are gone. I guess that the problem may have been my installing Plus! not from the product page, but directly from a file a friend sent me. I suppose he hadn't downloaded the sponsors for it. Anyway, my HJT log shows some strange objects, as you probably can notice. Thanks for your help and happy New Year.

Hi Yllain
It is good to hear that the Bar is gone. The problem is more likely that you got the sponsored version from your friend. If you do not uninstall Messenger Plus the right way you will not get rid of the sponsors which means that the bar stays.

Your log does not look bad but we still need to get rid of some items left behind.

Open HiJackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". When the scan is finished put a check mark by the item that are listed in bold.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.zxpxrpipzgbjpa.com/SrQkoXX1_1YE…CK1HSVvxYR.html
Close ALL PROGRAMS and BROWSERS that are running, except HijackThis and then click the "fix" button.

Delete the following Folders in BOLD. If you do not find them please tell me in your next post.
C:\DOCUME~1\PROPIE~1\DATOSD~1\TITLER~1 The~1 means that the word is longer bu was cut of to keep it to eight letters. Look for folders that start the with the letters before the~.
C:\DOCUME~1\PROPIE~1\DATOSD~1\GLOBAL~1
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Datos de programa\SoftwareRdrOpenHelp
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Datos de programa\Bias Mapi Keep Download

Reboot

Now a question: Do you have any problems with the computer now or is everything OK

* Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply"
Hi again,

I finally erased the file you told me with HJT, and the good news is that it hasn't reappeared! I scanned again and didn't find anything strange. Here´s the log:

My PC seems to be running OK now; the main page of my explorer is back to normal, there are no strange icons in my desktop and the undesired search bars are gone. It looks like it's fixed now. If it is (and also if it is not), thank you very much for your unvaluable help!
Well done Yllain. Your log looks clean.

Now that your computer is free of malware, I want you to take some precautions to avoid being re-infected.

Settings and maintenance

1. Clean out temporary files.
Go to "Start" > "Run" and type cleanmgr
Make sure the following are selected:
* Temporary Internet Files
* Recycle Bin
* Temporary Files
Click "OK'.
Repeat for each user account on the computer.
You should do this every few weeks to avoid buildup of unnecessary junk.

2. Clean Out System Restore.
Malware could get backed up in System Restore.
For Win XP follow these instructions to delete all restore points.
1. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel".
2. Make sure the Control Panel is in "Classic View". If it is not, click "Switch to Classic View" towards the top-left of the screen.
3. Double-click "System" and go to the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" and click "OK" and then "Yes".

After restarting your computer you should turn it back on by following the above procedure and uncheck "Turn off System Restore".

You can find out more about this subject at
Managing Windows Millennium System Restore

or at

How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore

3. You reconfigured Windows to show hidden files and you should reset this to its original state useing the instructions from here except that
1. Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading put a mark for "Do not show hidden files and folders".
2. Uncheck "Display content of system folders"
3. Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

4. Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions that apply to all "Windows" except "Windows XP with SP2". In SP2 many of those setting are the default settings but check your settings anyhow. The settings can become restrictive but you should use them anyhow. If there are sites that will not show up right with those settings and that you rely on to be free of malware place them in the trusted zone.

1. Click "Start". Open "Control Panel".
2. Select the "Internet Options"
3. Select "Security" Tab and select the following settings.

* ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Download signed ActiveX controls: Disable
• Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
• Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Disable
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Disable

* Downloads
• Font Download: Disable

* Microsoft VM
• Java permissions: Disable Java

* Miscellaneous
• Allow META REFRESH: Disable
• Display mixed content: Disable
• Drag and drop or copy and paste files: Disable
• Installation of desktop items: Disable
• Launching programs and files in an IFRAME: Disable
• Navigate sub-frames across different domains: Disable
• Software channel permissions: High Safety
• Userdata persistence: Disable

* Scripting
• Active scripting: Disable
• Allow paste operations via script: Disable
• Scripting of Java applets: Disable

* User Authentication
• Logon: Prompt for username and password

4. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
5. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

These are a must to protect yourself from malware.
1. Get a good anti-virus if you don't have one. A lot of people like AVG .
If you have an old copy do not use it. AVG Free 7 has been released and version 6 will not be supported and updated anymore.
KEEP IT UPDATED

2. Get a good firewall if you don't have one.
Many like ZoneAlarm. You can download a free copy here

Be restrictive with access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not make the block permanent.

3. MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to keep “Windows” and "Internet Explorer” updated. Go to ”Start”> "Control Panel" > "Security Center" > "Automatic Updates" and if you are not sure that you will do a update in a timely manner, set the "Automatic updates to automatically update your computer.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof you must keep it updated as well. Go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. Update MS Office here.

4. Download and install “SpywareBlaster”
Run it. Click "Updates" at the left and click "Check for Updates". After updating click "Protection" at the left and towards the bottom click "Enable All Protection". You should now be protected from all known bad ActiveX. You should occasionally check for updates.

5. Download and install "SpywareGuard"

Further tools

I highly recommend downloading and installing the newest versions of “AdAware SE Personal” and “Spybot Search and Destroy”
After installing remember to update the definition files for each program.
I also suggest that you visit this website and follow the instructions on how to configure both programs for best detection.

There are many other programs that will add extra layers of protection to your computer as well.
I recommend “IE-Spyad” By default, it is unzipped to "C:\ie-spyad". Find out how to install it by going to the "ReadMe.txt". You should occasionally get updates by using the bat file or by uninstalling and deleting the old files and returning to the site to get the new version.

A Trojan scanner would be also be helpful. You can download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans.

The ”a Squared” trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans. Nice to add to your armor if you wish.
Download free from “a Squared” (The download button is at the bottom of the page). Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

It is worth while to take a look at "So how did I get infected in the first place? for some good advice.

Update all protective programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Best of luck and clean computing
Elrond
Hi Elrond, I would like to thank you very much for all the help, support and advice you've given me in this forum. Now I must look up the tips you've given me in your last message in order to protect my PC. I already have most of the programs you list there, but I can also see many important things I didn't know, so thanks again for the advice. I'm sure that, with all this protections and fixes, you won't have to hear from me for quite a long time! Take care and goodbye! :thumbup:
Glad we could help.
