I have a process running that is literally sucking up all the memory available. It refuses to be deleted, I found it in the registry under c:window\speech\abrcmd rerun. I googled it and nothing really comes up except HJT log postings. What is it good for except using all my memory? How do I delete it? I tried renaming it - but nope. HELP.
Hi and welcome to the forum. :D

Step # 1

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

REBOOT

Step #2

Please download and run Spybot & AdAware SE Then follow the instructions in the link below to run.

Spybot & Adaware Tutorial

REBOOT

Step # 3

Then do a virus scan here >>> Trend Micro

Reboot and post HiJackThis log.
The TREND scan revealed 6 ( out of 16) remaining Trojans named Vundo_D; E; and Agent.pc all of which it says are "uncleanable" and one not accessible. The process running: abrcmd.exe continues to gobble up the CPU memory like a hungry turkey. This Trend scan took over an hour too. So what next? And thanks for your help and patience I'm a 60 year old granny.

You have a "Stopguard" infection. Please do not reboot until told to do so. Each reboot can make the infection harder to remove.

If you have rebooted since you posted the log, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS FIX. Instead post another log file.

Download Killbox >>> http://www.eudaemonia.me.uk/downloads/Files/KillBox.zip

Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\DOCUME~1\KENDAL~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\dmcrba.dat

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the window that opens up, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The file should show up in the window. Then repeat the process, this time adding:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmss\vmss.exe

If that's successful you should have the two files listed. Then repeat so that these files appear in the list as well:

C:\documents and settings\kendall marone\local settings\temp\UIr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\Speech\abrcmd.exe

When they are all there (and double check!), in the same window choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32/left.html

You can also put a check beside the 016 linesa as they are activex filesa and will be reloaded if and when you visit those sites again,

Then whiwle in safe mode still delete these files if present

C:\documents and settings\kendall marone\local settings\temp\UIr.exe<< C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe<< C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmss<< C:\WINDOWS\Speech\abrcmd.exe<<

Delete all files in this folder:

c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp <— FOLDER

Then reboot and post a new log please.
So far so good on the above instructions, I'm up to the part where I rebooted and I'm to run HJT again, the only thing, midway thru the instructions you state "while in safe mode still…." does this mean I am to reboot in safe mode, then run HJT again or not? I don't see where I went to safe mode, just that suddenly I was supposed to be there…sorry to be so dense…
Ok GURU - here's my latest log - the one file I just KNEW was a problem (the abrcmd.exe) is gone - thank you for that!!!
WHAT NEXT?

It's running terrific using only about 1 - 2% of memory now instead of 90-100% - you are AWESOME - THANK YOU so much!!! and Happy Holidays!
If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
