Hi there :)

A while ago, my PC was slow and doing the "virtual memory is low" thing. I assumed I had some spyware but although I had done scans with different software I wasn't entirely sure if all sypware had been eliminated.

I bought more RAM which solved the virtual memory problem but obviously not the spyware problem. The virtual memory problem is gone now. However, I seem to be getting problems with some sort of programme that keeps opening and eating up all my CPU usage (around 99% of it).

When I've opened windows task manager the file name it comes up as to begin with is something like "boreto" but then quickly changes itself to Internet Explorer. So it's either running through IE or disguising itself that way. Either way, I close this process and it re-appears again a second later (literally!) so I have to keep closing it otherwise all my CPU is taken up and my computer runs slow again and/or crashes. I am assuming this is some sort of spyware that needs removing? I've done sypware scans and none of them seem to be able to pick it up.

Most of my PC problems seem to go through IE. I have the problem with the hijacked home page URL too. I've had this a few times and some removal programmes have managed to change it back to google for me but I think it's been hijacked again by something not legit. I don't use IE so this problem doesnt affect me personally, I use FireFox. But I realise it is still a problem that needs cleaning up. So any help you can give would be fantastic. :)

Here's a copy of my HJT log:

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.
Thank you for the speedy response. It's greatly appreciated. Hi

Read below, for you did install the sponsor program, known as LOP.

Messenger Plus! (MessengerPlus2, MessengerPlus3) (MP) is an add‑on for Microsoft's free messaging programs Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. It is a 'free' download (with a few stingers in its tail). MP includes an optional Sponsor Program provided by C2Media. The Sponsor Program is commonly known in the anti‑spyware and adware world as 'Lop' or 'Lop.com'. There has been a problem since Messenger Plus! first started including the Sponsor Program in approximately May 2003, with users installing the Sponsor Program without understanding what the Sponsor Program is, what it does to a user's system, or the privacy implications involved.

Messenger Plus!, if installed to include the 'sponsor program', will install adware on your computer that generates pop up windows. The Sponsor Program will also change your home page, your search engine settings, place numerous links in IE favorites (including online casino and gambling links) and place more links on your desktop. The search toolbar that is installed cannot be turned off. The pop up advertising windows will appear even if you are running IE's pop‑up blocker. This is because the Sponsor Program adds its advertisement URLs to the pop‑up blocker exclusion list. If you want to reinstall MessengerPlus3, make sure you click "I refuse, do not install the sponsor program". This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Are you advising me to uninstall and reinstall messenger plus and refuse to accept the sponsor program now or to wait? Hi

Yes, if you wish to keep MSPlus uninstall then reinstall without the sponsor programs, then I can remove the LOP leftovers.

Run Smitfraudfix
Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from below:

    Here
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.
I went to uninstall Messenger Plus Live and received the following message:

Messenger Plus Live is currently installed without it's sponsor program. Selecting "Remove All" will only uninstall Messenger Plus Live from your system.

Would you like me to go ahead and uninstall it anyway? I realise I already have the LOP thing on my PC but I am guessing I must have got that from a previous version of messenger plus?

Here are the results of SmitFraidFix after using option #2 and rebooting:

Hi

Just uninstall it then try uninstalling LOP through Add/Remove Programs also. I will add Lop's folders to the CFScript anyway.

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C
