Back again…sigh (and sorry). I'm running AVG, AdAware and Spybot but something is up. I'm finding things 'just aren't working right': frequent Windows crashes when I try to access the Control Panel and the odd crash of OE. I keep my system updated (Microsoft downloads) but on the advice of many colleagues, have avoided the SP2 update. Here's my log (by the way, I was surprised to see an entry below for McAfee since we uninstalled it quite a while ago - anything worth changing?). Thank you in advance!

Hello rotrhed, Welcome to TomCoyote Forum, First I need to tell you that your version of AVG 6 will not longer be supported after 12/31/04. The new version, AVG Free is ready for download here: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php No need to uninstall the old version, that will be done for you during the download.

Are you running a firewall? I just do not believe the ICF in Windows XP is enough protection. Once you move to SP2, they Windows firewall that is enabled by default will do the job. Until you are ready, here are two links for free firewalls:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/comp…reeDownload.jsp
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm
IF you install one of these, turn off the ICF

The McAfee items in the DPF (downloaded program Files) are ActiveX plugins, that can be removed anytime you wish. If you ever return to the website, you will be prompted to download the file again. I will remove those two items for you, BUT you may also look and if you are sure you are not using them, remove any of the 016 lines you wish.

Scan with HijackThis and check each of these line items:

Close all browser windows and click on "Fix Checked"

Empty the recycle bin and reboot the computer.

Clean like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then OK, allow Windows to remove anything it locates. Using Add Reply to stay in this same thread, post a new log for a check, include your comments and anything you think we should know.
I will have information then to help you stay clean.

Here is some information that you might want, including where to order the SP2 CD, for when you are ready.

SP2 CD
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…us/default.mspx
What you should know
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

I am adding these two links to Ad-aware and Spybot. Once you have finished the above instructions, look at this information to make sure you have the up to date version, all updates, and that you are configured exactly as suggested in the links. Then run them as suggested. Run them often, after a heavy day of surfing and at least weekly.

Ad-aware:

Spybot:

All done as instructed. Thanks! And I sure appreciate the updated AVG as well as the link to the firewalls. AdAware and Spybot are up to date. My only concern at this point is that I don't seem to be able to access my control panel without it crashing on a regular basis, thus my ability to perform maintenance, access display options, etc, is severely limited. Sometimes, I can get in; most times, it crashes and I can not get in. Here's the latest log:

Hi rotrhed, Your log is clean, nothing I can see should be causing your problem. Besides updating to SP2, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss and ChrisRLG to help you stay clean:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/compsafetyonline.html

There are some items on your computer you might not need or might want to disable via msconfig. Here are some links to help you look at what is in the log and make educated decisions. If you are in doubt about anything, leave it alone:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://computercops.biz/StartupList.html
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

I will make one last suggestion, I suggest you post here to see if they can help, you can let them know your log has been looked at, and link them to this thread if you wish:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/bo…ard.id=sw_winxp There are some sharp folks at that board, see what they suggest.
