As has happened before anything that alters the host file directly has no effect any changes made disappear the next time the host file is opened through hijack, hoster or notepad, the kind of weird thing to me was that hoster can make the host file read only and even that change does not hold (got all excited when i saw that). here is my current log

Please completely uninstall Spybot. That way we will make sure that Teatimer is not getting in the way. Then boot to safe mode. Scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines. Reboot. If at reboot you are aksed if changes should be allowed click on yes.
spybot is unistalled, i even then deleted the folder for it, that was before your post…is it still showing in the hack log i just posted? I'll follow your other instuctions now and post in a bit (have to go out for a little while) thanks for your help

How many user profiles do you have on your computer? I see in a past log a bad 04 line but it has now disappered but with no remove noted.

just one (just double checked in users in control panel and system)

followed the rest of your steps, same as before after closing any program (hijack or hoster) and reopening them the addresses are back in the host files, generaly just after I click delete all disappear then auto.search.msn.com and about 2 more reappear then if I reopen the host file again all 7 or 8 entries are back

after every restart so far regardless of what has been done the host file looks like

I really don't think it's just what's in the host file, obviously some program is re-entering these values, or so it seems to me anyway, dunno

agamidr, did you disable items in your startup with Msconfig?
do you mean recently? no, I have items dissabled, most have been there and dissabled for probably a month or more, if you'd like I can re-enable what is their and post a log, also I've been thinking of picking up sp2 you guys think it might help/hurt/do nothing?

Yes, please enable them. I wouldn't do SP2 until your PC is clean.

which i find annouying since i don't use it, i just renamed the exe file, and removed it from msconfig, that way i could get it out of the system tray, don't know if it matters, probably not, but just wanted to mention it)
also it shows teatimer in the list but i uninstalled spybot and deleted the folder in was in…so i guess it's just referancing an old registry entry? scratch that, for the hell of it, i used hijack to just "fix" the tea timer and the lines are staying out of the host file, though the file does not stay as read only through hoster, but either way that's better than before, but I'm still getting some popups (while using hijack i got a few popups with no other program windows open) new log Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 10:01:09 AM, on 11/28/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\point32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\navapw32.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\HP CD-DVD\Umbrella\DVDTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\CA_LIC\lic98rmt.exe C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\CA_LIC\LogWatNT.exe C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue\ControlPanel\VersionCueTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe C:\Program Files\interMute\SpySubtract\SpySub.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\devldr32.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe O3 - Run VX2 Finder and post another log from it and Hijack This
did as you instructed, though i don't have a Import.reg, i have a guardian.reg (greyed out) i'm going to leave my comp idle with the browser open for an hour or so and see if i get any pop ups (in the past day or so if i did that i would come back to find 1-3 different ones waiting for me)

haven't had a popup since i did the hosts thing

i used hijack to just "fix" the tea timer and the lines are staying out of the host file, though the file does not stay as read only through hoster, but either way that's better than before
