I made the mistake of upgrading my OS from XP Home to XP Pro. One of the things that happened during the install is that my firewall got brought down without me knowing and never brought back up. Anyway, now I've got all kinds of worms, spyware, adware, and some sort of Internet Explorer hijacker. Plus when I connect to the net, about a meg of data per minute is going out my connection.

I keep cleaning with Macafee's Virus Scan, Adaware, and Aluria's Spyware remover, but the one thing that I can't seem to get rid of is the IE Hijacker. As soon as I connect, a window opens to 63.248.131.130, and then I get little .exe's on my root directory, worms and spyware (the latest being AdClicker-BA.dll, IPSentry, and QLowZones-2.gen) and several ad-type popups. I also get some weird install messageboxes for stuff that I never tried to install.

Here's my latest log

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

It's always best to use "off the shelf" programs first, then resort to "fixing" things with Hijack This! on items that won't go away using any other method.

With that in mind, let's get you started.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
(This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft....upport/download
(This is the NEW Build 1.05)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

http://www.cjwd.demo...ot-adaware.html

Reboot after running each program.

Please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

Then make a new log file and "copy/paste" it into this thread, and we'll deal with any leftover malware as needed. :)

Thanks Micah,

I ran both Spybot and the newer version of Ad-Aware and they eliminated a lot of stuff. I actually ran each of them a couple of times to see if anything came back - Spybot keeps finding registry entries for DSO Exploit. Anyway, here's the log.

Hopefully you can see something in there that I still need to get rid of because some of the stuff is definitely still coming back - as soon as I connect to the internet something is trying to popup windows - but my popup blocker is stopping them.

That got rid of a lot more stuff - nothing tried to open a browser when I logged on this time, and for once my sent bytes are much less than my received bytes - we're getting there. Here's the log now:

Just a few questions - it looks like the mscom32.exe files came back. I already got rid of them again. There are a few things in the list that may or may not be harmless, but I have no idea what they are:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPGamesActiveMenu] C:\Program Files\WildTangent\ActiveMenu\HP\Games\ActiveMenu.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConMgr.exe] "C:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\ConMgr.exe"
Actually, I know what the WildTangent one is from and I already uninstalled the software, so can I get rid of it? The rest of them, I don't have a clue. If you're feeling patient can you clue me in? I'd like to learn what's running on here.

Also, I've got a few exe's that I'm not sure of: In the root directory, there are 3: explor.exe, winxp2592.exe and wuactld.exe. Then in the Program Files folder, there is Win2000PPAHotfix.exe. Are any of these things that I should delete?

And one last question for now - in the C:/Windows/Prefetch folder there seem to be files related to some of the things I'v efixed in HijackThis, for example, there's files called: MSCOM32.EXE-22A72C19.pf and PRAXIS.EXE-137E6463.pf. Are they anything I should be worried about?

Thanks again. I feel like I'm finally making some progress.

If they virus scans don't "take something out", all we can do is keep "fixing" it with Hijack This!

As long as the list of "fixes" gets shorter each time, we'll continue down this path.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Dcom2 Fix] mscom32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Dcom2 Fix] mscom32.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Dcom2 Fix] mscom32.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

mscom32.exe <--- file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

I'll look up those programs you're asking about, and provide some info later.

OK, all of the mscon32.exe stuff is gone, except for that file in the Windows/Prefetch folder - MSCOM32.EXE-22A72C19.pf

The log is clean now.

Would suggest uninstalling "Viewpoint Manager", then reboot. It is considered "spyware".

Program info as promised:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE

On HP computers, Recguard prevents the deletion or corruption of the WinXP Recovery Partition. Without it enabled, it is possible to knock that completely out and force the customer to send the PC back to HP for a re-image, possibly at the customer's expense

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

qttask.exe prduced by Apple, installs a tray bar icon which links to the Apple QuickTime video streaming tool. This program is a non-essential system process, and is installed for ease of use.

The above process is one you can "live without". I had it in my log, and have removed it with no ill effects.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize

This loads the System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KBD] C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE

Multimedia keyboard manager. Required if you use the multimedia keys

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe

igfxtray.exe is a process which allows you to access access the Intel Graphics configuration and diagnostic application for the Intel 810 series graphics chipset.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe

This item keeps track of how many times the system has been recovered and the times of the first and last recoveries done on the system. Leaving unchecked will sometimes prevent the Keyboard Manager program from detecting that the computer is an HP. Since this program/driver was only made to run on HP, if it can't tell that it is an HP it will not run. If unchecked, it can prevent the running of the Application Recovery CDs, the use of the multimedia keys, and the HP Instant Support. Also seen that without it running, the Riptide Sound card that was installed on some older HP computers stops working

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPGamesActiveMenu] C:\Program Files\WildTangent\ActiveMenu\HP\Games\ActiveMenu.exe

Wild Tangent demo games that come with some HP computers. Unchecking it can prevent the games from running occasionally

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe

hkcmd.exe is installed alongside Intel multimedia devices and allows configurable options for these devices

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConMgr.exe] "C:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\ConMgr.exe"

Connection Manager as used by Earthlink and others. If you need this to ensure a proper connection but don't want to connect at startup try creating your own shortcut

I hope this helps.

GOD bless!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.o...topic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck....s.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally, I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)

:wavey: Great. Thank you very much. I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am. I like to think of myself as being pretty computer savvy, but I just couldn't have done this on my own. I'm in the process of completing the rest of your recommendations - I'll post again when I'm done. But I really wanted to thank you now. If you're here in the US, have a Happy Thanksgiving.
