I was turned on to this forum by a co-worker that was helped by you all and thought I could benefit as well.
I have several programs hijacking my browser, spyware warning pop-ups and several unwanting .exe files clogging my computer that I can't get rid of. Not to mention unwanted "sex" dialers and the like.
I have Mcafee Antivirus 9.0 which I loaded and it will detect and remove these temporarily. It will not do anything with qhost.asd. (went to mcafee.com and went through there specific intructions to remove but still there.
I would like to regain control of my pc - any help would b greatly appreciated!
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
(This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download
(This is the NEW Buile 1.05)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Reboot after running each program.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.98.2:

http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/HijackThis.exe

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.

:)
After running spybot, ad-aware and hijackthis - here is the log
Hope it helps…

Here is the new HijackThis log. There are some problems…
1 - an error at startup Error loading c\program files\wildtangent\apps\cda\cdaengine0400.dll
2 - There is a "ghost" image of the link left on the desktop every time I select something from the start menu (I know, dont use the start button haha)

I did a show all hidden files and folders, the only item you specified to delete in safe mode that I could actually find was the system32.dll file (none of the others were there.

Thanks again for your help!
Well… All the malware is gone from the log.

About your errors.

1 - an error at startup Error loading c\program files\wildtangent\apps\cda\cdaengine0400.dll

It's in the log file:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain

If there's an error, you have two options. "Uninstall" it (via "Add/Remove Programs"). If you can't do it there, just "fix" the above entry with Hijack This!, and reboot.

It's not a "necessary" program. Most think "Wild Tangent" is "spyware", anyway.

2 - There is a "ghost" image of the link left on the desktop every time I select something from the start menu (I know, dont use the start button haha)

Not sure what to make of that, since all the malware is gone.

You may want to go here:

Rogue Anti-Spyware Programs

And read about:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpySpotter] C:\PROGRA~1\SPYSPO~1\SpySpotter.exe

It's considered a "rogue" program.

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
