Hi,
Just for a quick "what started all this" here goes:

My wife couldn't open her favorite program DJInkers and got only a "C:\Windows\System32\AUTOEXEC.NT" nasty-gram. After visiting a few sites to try and figure out what's going on ( and end up only chasing my tail ) I found you guys and decided to make a post.

In the past week there have been many pop-ups and messages showing up that are new. I already had and used AdAware, Spybot and Spysweeper - each finding several bad guys. But the problems still exist. So I tried to install SP2 ( up 'till now I was a bit apprehensive because of some of the probs ) but found that I couldn't install SP2 also ( I tried 3 times and got a "Service Pack 2 Set-up Error….Access is Denied" ). I tried to install AVG or Anti-vir anti-virus software but got the same"…System32\AUTOEXEC.NT" message. My problems are continuing to add up: this morning at computer start-up, I got a completely black screen ( my icons are still visible ) with a "Warning You're In Danger…..Secure Yourself Right Now" messsage that took over my desk top and the only way I got rid of it was with a "system restore"…but it came back later! ( My HijackThis log was taken with this active. ) There are several other pop-up messages that I've kept notes on but don't want to make this post TOO long. I'll shut up now and post my HiJack log.

Thanks in advance for ANY help. I'm drowning…
Jon in Saugus

Web_Rebates
Viewpoint

Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Double click my computers & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Scan with HijackThis and place an check next to the following entries, close all windows, then press *fix checked*

Shelf Life,

Thanks so much for your help so far and tackling my probs. Some of the things that you listed I could not do. Here's what happened:

For the HijackThis "fix checked" part, the following were not present…

04 - HKLM…..[ViewMgr]…..\ViewpointManager\ViewMgr.exe
04 - HKLM…..[WebRebates0]….WebRebates0.exe
08 - Extra context menu item: Web Rebates….

In "Safe Mode" and removing "C:\Program Files\….WinUpdt.exe>>entire folder", this was not a folder and these are still in the "area" - Comm.dll, WinKa.exe and Info.txt. I DID delete the "WinUpdt.exe" icon.

In "SafeMode" I could not find the following ( to delete ):
C:\Windows\conscorr.exe
C:\Windows\System32\yvxupig.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\…..ttuh.exe
C:\Windows\System32\d?dplay.exe

Also in "Safe Mode" my keyboard was not functioning ( ??? ) so I right clicked "Start" and used "Explore" to navigate to and delete contents of:
Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
The Recycle Bin I just emptied it.

After the reboot, I checked ZoneAlarm and blocked:
d1/2dplay.exe
ViewMgr
ViewMgrInstaller
wupdt.exe
wupd0000.exe
abetterinternet ( 2ea. )
ttuh.exe

I used a couple of the online scanners and they didn't "see" anything. The Giant Spyware found a lot of stuff ( I might buy that one ).

I tried to install AVG and got the same error message:
C:Windows\System32\AUTOEXEC.NT….

Here's my current HJT log:

I'm sorry I'm such a greeny and couldn't do everything that you spelled out ( very good directions, BTW ).

Thanks again for your help,
Jon
hello,

log looks better, could you move HJT out of the temp in to its own folder,I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

giant antispyware is great.
run hjt and have it fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Task Manager] C:\windows\system32\taskmgn.exe

note spelling>>> (looking for taskmgn.exe,>>>not taskmgr which is ok)
next bring up taskmanager by hitting crtl alt delete keys, under process tab look for taskmgn.exe and end process if running. then find and delete the file. if it gives you problems then boot into safe mode and try.

here are two more free antivirus links, try one of these, install, update and due full system scan.,then post a new HJT log…………………

http://www.free-av.com/
http://www.avast.com
Thanks again for your help.

Things went much smoother this time…I found tasmgn.exe and got rid of it via HJT, ended the running process and found and deleted the files.

Installed and ran AntiVir Guard. It found many trojans, worms and other nasties.

I ran Giant again and it found nothing.

After a re-boot I ran the HJT….

( After the re-boot, my desk top still has the black screen ( with my normal icons visible ) and the window that says "Warning you're in danger…." and that sign is a link to a web site to make my computer "safe". When I shut down or re-boot, this black screen disappears for an instant and my "normal" desktop pic is displayed. It acts as though this blackness is a web page or something. Also, when the black screen is showing, I can just make out some of my "mormal" desktop pic, with a small piece showing going left to right on the screen and about 2mm thick. [ if any of that makes sense] )

Thanks again, Jon
hello, your logs good. you have antivirus software, giant has found nothing. anything unusual asking for connection in zone alarm? lets try this: with HJT open, select config> misc tools>generate startuplist log, copy and paste it somewhere. then post it here……………..
Hi Shelf Life,

Zone Alarm is quiet lately.

Here's a HJT start-up list AND I have to confess that I made a boo-boo and I hope that I didn't waste your time: My AdAware and SpyBot are/were older versions and I didn't realize it until this afternoon while a perusing another forum and looking at the probs that someone else had. I installed AdAware SE and SpyBot 1.05, up-dated them and ran them. SpyBot snagged around 30ish bad guys and AdAware caught a few too. I'll post a current HJT log after the HJT start-up. Again, I hope that I didn't make things take longer.

Thanks again, Jon

BTW - My desk top still has that black screen guy. Any idea waht that thing is?

hello,

your log looks good, cant id any malware.no you didnt waste my time, those older versions are just as valuable.

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

1) Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
http://www.free-av.com/

2) Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with crapware. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, read the privacy policy,a link way down at the bottom of the page. Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think., Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is.

3)Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…y/settings.mspx
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4)Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, but better than nothing. Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.
Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
Kerio Personal Firewall: http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
Outpost Firewall: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

5)Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes.)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition: http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot Search and destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

6)Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=49
IE-SPYAD: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD

Hi Shelf Life, Thanks for the info… I tried again to install SP2 and it wouldn't do it. After several minutes I get an error message "Service Pack 2 Set-up error… access is denied" and then a message that the install did not complete. Then it spends the next 7-8 minutes un-installing whatever it DID install. As far as a virus guard - why only one? I tried a couple-three each seemed to collect up some baddies. I will certainly watch what I ( and my kids ) download. I like the Zone Alarm, it seems to keep a lot of crap out. I now have the latest editions of AdAware and Spybot. I will take some time and investigate the other web sites that you told me of. At this point would you consider my machine "fixed" as far as this part of tomcoyote is concerned? If so, which forum would you recommend for my SP2 type probs and the black desk top thing that I describes earlier? Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out. This is a great site and you guys take the time to walk us rookies through the procedures that many other sites assume that everyone knows ( and don't want to waste time with the people that DON'T know ). Thanks again, Jon
hello,

i dont think its critical that you get SP2. it provides security stuff you can get from other places, like zone alarm.. dont know why you cant get it. here is a link that may help:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

two resident AV may conflict with one another, i would use one and once in awhile use a online scanner.
the black screen may just be a leftover of the malware.

lets try this :
One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus may be accidentally backed up because of this feature. In order to completely remove a virus on these operating systems, you should disable System Restore before cleaning the system, then reenable it after the system is clean.

Follow the instructions below to disable System Restore

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.
To turn off Windows XP System Restore:

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
8. Proceed with what you need to do; for example, virus removal. When you have finished, restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.
>>>then reboot, which will delete possibly infected restore files

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives."
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
>>>>then reboot one more time to make new clean restore points
Hi Shelf Life,

Well, I think that you whipped it for me. It seems like my computer has returned to its normal self.

The "black screen" gerbil was from a group named Smart Security. These turds apparently infected quite a few people several months ago. It took a while but I found a web site that had a bunch of people trading ideas on how to rid their PCs of this menace. I lucked out ( big time ) because it seems that I only got the screen. Many others had their machines almost taken over with their CPUs running at 100% and everything slowing to a crawl. The only thing that I had was a file called C:\windows\web\desktop.html. But this was the nasty that would show on my desktop all the time! ANYWAY….that's gone too.

Thanks for the great info on the anti virus and mal ware programs. They now have a permanent spot on my machine.

I'm not sure if I can install SP2 yet, but I really don't care at this point. If I have trouble, I'll bug someone else…I've taken enough of your time as it is.

Thanks again,
Jon
hello, sorry for delay, thats good news, you got rid of the loading html screen. sp2 only adds a poor firewall, stick with zone alarm, and annoying msgs about updates being avialble and how your AV might be out of date, of course you could disable all this in the i think they call it the "security center" (i fell safe now). i think it disables afew unneeded services also, but i dont think getting it is critical…..shelf life
