Can you see if you can defragment your system. Then disable SpywareGuard, and anthing that you have that is locking yor home page or settings in IE.
Well, I defraged my system with no problems and actually uninstalled any program
that would not allow my homepage to be changed (figured it was easy enough to reinstall). I rebooted several times in between and got the error message, upon
shutdown, that I talked about in the above posts. This time I got to write it down.
It says:

The instruction at "0x0040a31e" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program.

At this point the system shuts down without me terminating anything.
Also, I ran Ad-Aware and got the 2 threat messages once again, only
the location of the script or code file was in a different location:

C:\DOCUME~1\(User Name)\LOCALS~1\Temp\AAWTMP\C618625\3270AB\complete_set_hacking_tools+manuals\hacking_tools

Norton always says it deletes them, but they always show up.
I had found this file, complete_set_hacking_tools+manuals, in a zip file dropped into the system32 folder of this HD before zeroing it out. I had deleted it then–I found a dropper on my HD at that time as well. However, I did have the slave HD
I`ve talked about hooked up (which does have system volume info and a recycling
bin on it). I'm assuming it stored that info in one of those areas. Then when I moved other info of that HD to this one, well, it transferred some how. It is
certainly not hooked up now and has been zeroed out also. I used fileAlyzer to gather more info on each. Here's what I found. Remember these are in an encoded or scripted temp file:

Haktek.exe:

The RO leads to http://www.google.com.

I did not reset my homepage to my ISP's this time in hopes of actually trying to locate the problem here.
Now that it's back. Run these in order.

Download FxAgentB.exe from HERE and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click HERE to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1. Reboot when done.

Then click HERE to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log.
Did as you instructed, in the order given. Also, Norton popped up the 2 threat notices during the Ad-Aware scan once again and said it removed the files, but, alas, they remain. There were only 2 negligible MRU's this time with Ad-Aware scan (deleted both). Here are the log files for FxAgentB and Hijackthis:

Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool 1.0.1.2

If this doesn't get it cleared, time for the pro's.
I understand your frustration!!!!!! Can't thank you enough for undergoing this torture with me….just so tired of zeroing HD's out and ending up with it once again while being as protected and up-to-date as possible. I've certainly learned alot, but wish it had happened in a better way! I have one question before I do what you instructed. I used killbox.exe to try and delete mshtml.dll upon normal reboot, but no dice. My question is, I noticed that right next to mshtml.dll in the system32 folder is a file called mshtml.tlb (a Typelib I assume). Do you know if this is supposed to be there? Can't tell good from bad anymore–they all look bad after months of this mess!
Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Then run System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip
Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"
Well, little eagle, here's my advice about deleting the mshtml.dll:
Make sure you have a replacement. Seems it is a html viewer, which
I found out after the fact. Once I deleted it in safe mode and
fixed the 018 entries in Hijackthis, I rebooted in normal mode.
I was unable to get an internet connection, able to open norton, but
only the top toolbar would show, everything else was blank. Internet
Explorer and many other programs did the same or wouldn't function.
For some reason (being desperate I guess), I decided to check the WINDOWS
system folder $hf_mig$ and guess what I found: a mshtml.dll from Service
Pack 2. Why it was here, who knows, but I copied it and moved the copy
to the system32 folder. I also deleted this file and had it replaced
upon reboot with killbox.exe in safemode. Just to make sure it was a good
dll file (hopefully!). I was able to delete the mshtml.tlb file, which
WINDOWS replaced immediately on its own.

HOWEVER….the nasty files are back and for some reason windows installer
keeps trying to install different programs, at random times, looking for
files it's missing to install these things; 1 example: MSREDIS.MSI. This
file couldn't be found when I did a thorough search of my puter. It also pops
up when I drop and drag anything. I think I've upset the bugger that's
ruining my puter because it's trying to install programs like norton antivirus
2004 (already installed) and Roxio (already installed), and the paths to which
it notes definitely don't look right. These items are in different directories
than the similar programs its looking for. Are these possibly some of the files
the trojan has maybe duplicated during it's prolonged stay and now I've taken
away some of it's toys?!! I hope so!! The installer does become a bit annoying though, especially because I have to cancel it about 5 times before it will actually stop. Sometimes it shuts down explorer and I'm left with my puter screen and its background; no toolbars, shortcuts, etc.

I ran ALL of the online scans you suggested and then some….symantec (turned
mine off), trojan, etc. Nothing was found by any of them. Also ran stand alones
like Stinger, Vcleaner, etc., that found nothing. Thanks for pointing out the norton
issues with boot/shutdown times and errors. I will definitely try to change things
like the forums noted as soon as things are working a bit better. It's nice to know why I get that error message FINALLY! Glad I could be of assistance in some way ;)

Don't have a clue how I should proceed! I also did all with System Security Suite once again.

Here is my Hijackthis log if it helps at all (not much I'm afraid!):

The R0 is still http://www.google.com/.
Also, the program Qwik-Fix Pro is no longer working correctly. Pops up an error message on boot that its server list isn't good. Have tried to reinstall, but windows installer keeps looking for files it needs and wants me to point it to the correct path, but, like I said, these files don't exist or look awfully suspicious.
Thanks for all the help and info!! I'm sure this has been an experience! I will post to the other forum when I get a chance. If you have ANY other suggestions of where to go or simply what to do…….please do let me know. Again, I certainly do appreciate the time and effort you've put into helping me! This is a great forum! Unfortunately, not all pests can be solved. Just wish mine wasn't the difficult one :)
