Hello Everyone. I'm a newbie here and have FINALLY decided to post a Hijackthis log for some help. I had several CWS variants back in May of this year. I tried everything to fix the problems that kept creeping up by reading this forum and others. I ended up starting over by zeroing out my HD and reinstalling Windows XP. At the previous time, I had a slave HD as well with stored info. Well, I decided to move some of the info over to the drive I am using now. Needless to say, the problems are back!! I believe whatever was on the other drive (it had no OS) was stored in defraged image files taken from many areas of the HD (jpeg, dp, bmp, etc.). My system is once again running much slower than previously, no slave drives now, hanging apps, kernel32.dll error messages (something about inset page errors), and once and a while I get a message that says something can NOT attach to the memory during shutdown. Having learned my lesson from the previous encounter with whatever this mess is, I decided to post my log here before rearranging and deleting everything. I ran CWShredder and found nothing today, but have picked up CWS.Jksearch and CWS.HiddenDll results a couple days ago. Whenever I run adaware, PestPatrol, Spybot, Zonealarm, Norton, etc. a temp file appears in my temp folder that can NOT be deleted until the program is discontinued. I also have seen .rar, .zip files, and folders containing unopenable image files, that I have deleted long ago, appear under the same circumstances. So, If anyone can even venture a guess, PLEASE, do offer me some expert guidance! I could sure use it and would very much appreciate it! I'm running XP with Service Pack 2. Thanks!

Here's my Hijackthis log file:

Hello Freedom4All. Welcome to the TC.

Needless to say, the problems are back!! I believe whatever was on the other drive (it had no OS) was stored in defraged image files taken from many areas of the HD (jpeg, dp, bmp, etc.).

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but it won't hurt.

Free scanner + repair for infected JPEGs (for MS04-028)

As many of you would know there is a critical vulnerability that allows
attackers to gain control over a remote system simply by enticing the
victim into viewing a specially-crafter JPEG file.

A free scanner has now been released to help with the detection and
disinfection/repair of JPEG files infected with MS04-028 exploit code. The
scanner is available in both console and GUI user interfaces, and at less
than 30kbs in size it's a quick download and easy to use. More information
and the direct download link can be found here:
http://www.diamondcs.com.au/jpegscan/

Please help us spread the word, and please share with your friends and
colleagues to help reduce their chance of infection. Enjoy the program.

Please disable SpywareGuard before the fix with HJT. You can use ALT/Ctrl/Del
and end process. This will only disable it until you reboot.

I only see few things that need fixed in your log.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and Post a new HijackThis Log
Thank you so much for responding to my post LDTate! First off, I had
come across the JPEG scanner yesterday while looking for answers,
and the results came back clear. However, I did a GDI scan and
had several vulnerabilities listed. I`m not quite sure how to
deal with that as of yet. I disabled spywarequard as you instructed
and fixed the R0 and 018 entries in Hijackthis.

I had all of the folder options set up as you instructed already,
but double-checked and booted into safe mode. There was nothing
in the the C:\Windows\Temp folder. I went to the
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users but no local settings or
temp folder existed. The only folders there were DRM, Application Data,
Shared Documents, Templates, Desktop, Start Menu, and Favorites. There was
also a NTUSER.DAT.LOG and a NTUSER.DAT file there. I did check
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp folder
and it was empty. I deleted the Temporary Internet Files under interent options
and deleted the off-line content, as well as resetting the web
settings and emptying the recycle bin.

I did a Hijackthis scan immediately after rebooting (The first one posted).
I ran a cachecleaner after that to see if the temp files still located in
my temp folder would be deleted, but, alas, the same problem not being
able to rid myself of them. I did another Hijackthis scan and it had the
R0 returned, that I had originally fixed, back (The second one posted).
The original R0 with my start page was my change (http://www.rr.com/), my
internet service providers start page.

If this helps any, when I run adaware MOST times Norton throws 2 virus alerts
at me after scanning these undeletable files. It says the files contain HVLscan.zip
and hacktool.Haktek.exe within them. Also, from my past experience by reviewing
some of these files, the only legible word out of the code is ROOT ENTRY. Norton
backs up the files since it can't delete them. I try to delete them from there,
but, of course, to no avail. While online last evening, I also noted some image
files thrown into my temporary internet files:

vnd.ms.wmhtml://localhost/WMP6f227251-2ff3-47ec-b46e-f14df7111053.jpg

vnd.ms.wmhtml://localhost/WMPf9600259-e9a6-4e84-b1a0-3e025fc324fb.jpg

vnd.ms.wmhtml://localhost/WMP7fbbcb23-51c0-4b57-8a90-3d3a5fcbb770.jpg

I did not open, but they did delete fine. My host file is fine and checked often, as
well as these temp internet files. I know these jpg's were no pics, just code (have
opened them the first time I encountered all this mess, before zeroing the HD and
reinstalling XP). I do have one of the contents of the temp files saved to notepad.
I have NOT defraged my machine because I noticed from the previous disaster, the problem became worse and was using the fragments and becoming more entwined in the system.

I can't thank you enough for trying to sort through this mess for me!

The R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = from this log takes me to http://www.google.com.
1. Please download DllCompare here

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files)

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply.
Thank you LDTate…I knew the jpg's were from winamp (had been pointed that direction on another forum as well), but I've never used winamp on this HD…more suspicious garbage! They definitely didn't contain images either, just script or code (used a file analyzer to check–I didn't want to open them and have even more problems develope!). Thanks for joining in little eagle! I did as you instructed. Here is the log file: * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ O^E says: "There were no files found :)" ________________________________________________ 1,540 items found: 1,540 files, 0 directories. I downloaded ServiceFilter, but when I tried to run the script it gave me an error message: Windows Script Host access is disabled on this machine. Contact your administrator for details. I disabled the Scriptblocking Service in Xp, disabled it in my antivirus and other programs I thought would impede it from running, and allowed it to bypass the Data Execution Protection in Service Pack 2, but it still gives the same error message. Is there something I'm missing that needs to be disabled before this can run?

Download FxAgentB.exe from HERE and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click HERE to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1. Reboot when done.

Then click HERE to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log.
I ran FxAgentB.exe and no log file was created, just a message that
read: "Backdoor.Agent.B has not been found on your computer".

I rebooted and ran the 1.59.1 version of CWShredder to fix
(I have version 2.0 on my puter already, but used older version as
instructed). It reported that my system was clean and nothing was
found.

I again rebooted and opened Ad-Aware SE, which I had already on my puter.
There were no new updates, so I ran a Full Sytem Scan. A list of
9 negligible MRU's were found and I deleted them. During the scan with
Ad-Aware, Norton popped up a virus threat of Haktek.exe (Hacktool.Nuker)
and HVLscan (Hacktool), as it has at other times, and said it deleted them,
but did not (they were located in the temp files that are undeletable and in some
type of script or code in my C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)\Local Settings\Temp folder–
I've mentioned these files in the other posts.

I ran Hijackthis after rebooting once again and here is the log:
