Hi,

My Win2000 PC is clean according to spybot and AdAware. And it has all the MS security updates. But I am getting popup ads when definitely not expected, so I think I have some process that is hijacking my Internet Explorer. Can someone help?

I get these popups every time when I initiate a Google search (I have contacted Google and they insist that it is not their doing) and otherwise randomly. I believe it is a malware because I can get a pop up add when I access my own web pages which I have written myself!

Here is the log I got from HijackThis:

Hi,

yes, in my haste I did leave out the top part of the log file. I just did a scan again, and am submitting the complete log below. But I think I did solve my problem thanks to one of the web sites explaining what the various entries are. I had HijackThis remove the entry for C:\WINNT\localNRD.dll and it seems like my unwanted popups have disappeared.

If anyone sees anything else dangerous, though, that would be appreciated!

Regards,
Steve, Denmark

I am curious about one thing: I thought winmon was a legitimate windows thing, but it was suggested that I remove it. Any comments about that?

Thanks for the help so far!!!

Steve, Denmark
I hope you enjoyed your weekend :)

No, those lines are bad. See this google search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q;=winmo…G=Google+Search

That's a clean log now, well done!

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free Google toolbar to help stop pop up windows. NOTE: If you’re already using the popupblocker which is integrated with ServicePack 2, you don’t need to get the Google Toolbar, the popupblocker from IE is very good!
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!
Hi Hansie and thanks! Especially for the list of links in your reply - I am sending them around to all my colleagues here at work. I guess my problem is solved for now, but I don't know how to "close" this conversation. Thanks again! Steve, Denmark
